Newsday does not expect Jason Giambi to be offered salary arbitration by the Yankees.

Our View:The Yankees do not intend to re-sign him and would not want to get stuck with his salary if he accepted arbitration, which would cut into their plans to sign top free agents, such as CC Sabathia and AJ Burnett.
November 27, 2008
There is speculation that the Orioles may be interested in Jason Giambi, according to OriolePost.com.

Our View:The slugger could be an option if they are unable to land prized free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira.
November 20, 2008
The NY Post speculated that Jason Giambi could be a good fit for the Rays, according to the Hot Stove Blog on MLB.com.

Our View:It would make sense for the Rays to pursue Giambi, as the Rays have two less left-handed hitters after declining Cliff Floyd's option and with Eric Hinske a free agent. Giambi blasted 32 homers in 2008 with a solid .373 OBP. Giambi has hit 11 homers over 65 games at Tropicana Field as well.
November 5, 2008
MLB.com reports that the A's have rehired strength and conditioning coach Bob Alejo. A's general manager Billy Beane, however, essentially mocked the notion that the return of Alejo, who held the same position in Oakland from 1993-2001 prior to joining Jason Giambi in New York, was a precursor that the team is seeking to resign Giambi.

Our View:The Yankees declined Giambi's option earlier in the week. The slugger hit 32 home runs and had a .373 OBP in 2008.
November 4, 2008
The Yankees have declined their option on Jason Giambi, making him a free agent, according to the Sports Network.

Our View:Giambi hit 32 home runs last year and it will be interesting to see how much interest the power hitter will get this off-season.
October 29, 2008
Jason Giambi would like to remain with the Yankees, although they are undoubtedly going to decline his $22 million option for next season, according to the New York Post. "He would like to stay in New York if they want him," Giambi's agent, Arn Tellem said.

Our View:Giambi no longer can hit for the average he once did, as he ended last season at .247. He still has power, though, and a good enough eye that even if the Yankees aren't interested, he'll find a spot somewhere as a DH next season.
October 20, 2008
Eric Chavez is in favor of Oakland bringing back slugger Jason Giambi, according to the SF Chronicle. Chavez said, "I think it's a great fit. I don't know if it will happen or not, and I don't know what the shape of the team will be, but Jason has had productive seasons in New York and there's no doubt he could still be a good hitter. And he'd be a big hit in the clubhouse. Every time I watch him, it seems like he comes up with a big hit or a home run."

Our View:Giambi only hit .247 with the Yankees this season, but crushed 32 homers (over 145 games). Giambi is expected to be a free agent after the World Series, and GM Billy Beane previously stated that he intends to add a bat in the off-season.
October 18, 2008
It is unlikely that Jason Giambi will garner much interest from the Yankees in the offseason, according to SI.com.

Our View:Giambi signed a huge-money deal with New York after the 2001 season, but he was not the same player with the Yankees that he was in Oakland, and is pretty much DH-only material right now.
October 2, 2008
It is possible that Jason Giambi could return to his former team, the Oakland A's, in the offseason, according to Buster Olney of ESPN.com.

Our View:Giambi would return to Oakland a different player than when he left after the 2001 season. He never hit less than .291 in any full season with Oakland, but hit above .271 only in his first season with the Yankees. Not to mention the fact that he wouldn't be as, well, beefy since the last time he was in Oakland's clubhouse.
September 26, 2008
Jason Giambi could be playing his final games in a Yankees uniform this weekend, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:Through seven seasons in the Bronx Giambi has 209 home runs, tied for 10th in club history with Alex Rodriguez. No longer the all-around hitter he once was, Giambi still can be a very productive hitter at the plate as his 32 home runs and 95 RBI attest to. He'll latch on somewhere, though don't look for it to be with the Yankees.
September 23, 2008
Jason Giambi went deep for the 32nd time this season, helping lead the Yankees to a 3-1 win over the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

Our View:Giambi went 2-for-4 on the day, and has a shot to get to 100 RBI on the season if he has a good final few games.
September 6, 2008
Jason Giambi went 3-for-5 with a home run and a double on Saturday night. He two runs and two RBI in his west coast effort.

Our View:The slugger has struggled in the second half but his power has remained consistent. He now has 29 home runs on the season.
September 4, 2008
Jason Giambi showed up to the stadium with a right eye that had a cut and some swelling on it on Wednesday. When asked what happened, Giambi admitted he lost a battle with the bathroom door, according to the New York Post. "I walked into the bathroom door at the hotel and split it open. There was so much blood the maid probably was wondering where the body was hid," Giambi told the paper.

Our View:Giambi has had a nice season for fantasy owners, despite his .250 batting average. His OBP is still .377, and he has 28 home runs and 87 RBI on the year as well. But those bathroom doors can be tricky, so hopefully he pays a little more attention in the future.
August 28, 2008
Thanks to Jason Giambi the New York Yankees avoided a three game sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox. Giambi didn't start the game but was 2-2 with a two-run home run and game-winning RBI single in the ninth to propel the Yankees to a 3-2 win.

Our View:Giambi connected on his 27th home run of the season. Even though his average is at .251 his power numbers are there with his home runs and his 81 RBI.
August 27, 2008
Jason Giambi has only six hits in his career off of Red Sox starting pitcher Paul Byrd, who the Yankees play Wednesday, but four of them are home runs.

Our View:Giambi has six hits in 19 at-bats, which is a .316 average, but his slugging percentage is a monstrous .947. Despite Giambi's recent struggles, he could offer fantasy teams a homer or two if history is to be believed.
August 23, 2008
Jason Giambi had an RBI single and two-run homer in the Yankees' win over Baltimore Saturday.

Our View:Giambi is hitting just .233 this month but has five homers and 14 RBI.
August 17, 2008
Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi smacked a grand slam home run against the Kansas City Royals today, supporting the ugly 15-6 win over KC. Giambino posted just the one hit on the day, going 1-for-4 with the four RBIs and one run scored.

Our View:Giambi now touts 24 homers on the season, including four through August with 10 RBIs to boot.
August 4, 2008
Jason Giambi went 3-for-4 and hit his 21st home run of the season in New York's 9-5 loss to Texas.

Our View:Giambi shaved his mustache, and promptly got three hits. After saying he was going to re-grow it, maybe this game will change his mind.
August 4, 2008
Jason Giambi shaved his mustache after being lifted for a defensive replacement in the game on Sunday, according to the AP. He says he will grow it back as long as the team keeps winning.

Our View:Before today's game, Giambi was hitting .205 since July 1, so the lucky mustache was anything but lucky. Maybe shaving it will begin a new streak of luck.
July 20, 2008
Jason Giambi went 2-for-2 with a solo home run in Sunday's close 2-1 win over the Athletics at Yankee Stadium.

Our View:His homer was his 20th of the season, and his second over his last three games. His average may be on the decline, but he is still coming up big for fantasy owners in the power department.
July 13, 2008
Jason Giambi is having a poor July, and was hitting just .138 on the month coming into today's game, but he went 2-for-4 today with a home run and the Yankees lone RBI.

Our View:If you can deal with what is a declining average, Giambi can help your fantasy team in the power and on-base departments, so bear with him through this and he'll likely end up hitting better than the .253 he is currently at.
July 9, 2008
Jason Giambi went 1-3 with an RBI on Wednesday, as he helped the Yankees edge the AL East-leading Rays 2-1 at Yankee Stadium.

Our View:He snapped a four-game skid without a hit, and collected his 54th RBI of the season.
July 8, 2008
Jason Giambi, trying to shore up the final spot on the All-Star team, was held out of Tuesday night's lineup in favor of Wilson Betemit.

Our View:The opposing pitcher, Scott Kazmir, is another lefty who has been dominant against the Yankees slugger. Giambi is hitting just .125 in 16 career at-bats against Kaz, including seven strikeouts.
July 2, 2008
The Yankees found more than a few reasons for happiness this evening, posting 18 runs on 16 hits to triumph in dominating fashion over the Texas Rangers, 18-7. The man of the hour: Designated hitter Jason Giambi , going 2-for-4 at the plate with his 13th double and 18th homer of the season, totaling a whopping six RBIs and two runs scored on the night.

Our View:Giambi added the moustache and started hitting, touting six homers for 19 RBIs last month while hitting .305 through June. If he stays hot through July, he may become the most feared hitter in a lineup bloated with All Stars.
June 22, 2008
Jason Giambi went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI for Yankees on Sunday. He also stole his second bag of the year.

Our View:Long live the power of the golden thong. After hitting .164 in April, Giambi is hitting .328 with 12 home runs over his last 42 games rewarding those who had the patience to keep him on their roster during his darkest hours.
June 17, 2008
Only three batters failed to post a hit this evening as the Yankees put the Padres to bed, 8-0. The top man of the day in what is becoming an alarming trend over recent weeks was first baseman Jason Giambi , going 2-for-3 at the plate with two home runs on the night, totaling three RBIs.

Our View:This gives Giambi six homers with 13 RBIs through June, hitting .341 for the month.
June 11, 2008
The Yankees made it interesting late, but Oakland held on to take the 8-4 win. The Yanks were led, once again, by first baseman Jason Giambi , going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and his 15th home run of the season, totaling two RBIs and two runs scored on the night.

Our View:Giambi left May with a strong sense of resurgence, hitting .315 on the month with six home runs and 14 RBIs. Through the early games of June, he's hitting .360 with four home runs and 20 RBIs.
June 6, 2008
Jason Giambi is back in the lineup Friday after missing a couple games with a sore left foot.

Our View:Wilson Betemit, who homered in both games filling in for Giambi, returns to the bench.
June 5, 2008
Jason Giambi hit his 12th home run of the season in a pinch hitting role for the Yankees on Thursday to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning for the Yanks.

Our View:Since the start of May, Giambi is hitting .341 with seven home runs, so if your leaguemates haven't caught on to that fact this may be the last chance for you to try and pilfer the g-string diva.
June 4, 2008
Wilson Betemit starting at first base for the ailing Jason Giambi (foot) on Wednesday night. Giambi took a foul ball off his foot in Minnesota on Monday night.

Our View:The Yankee slugger is considered day-to-day.
June 4, 2008
Jason Giambi was forced out of Tuesday action in the seventh inning after being struck on the left foot by a pitch, according to the NY Daily News.

Our View:X-rays on his foot were negative, and manager Joe Girardi noted that Giambi is day-to-day.
May 28, 2008
Jason Giambi continued his hot hitting Wednesday, picking up two hits, including his 11th homer of the season. Giambi is batting .339 with six homers and 14 RBI this month.

Our View:Suddenly Jason has turned into a legitimate fantasy option after hitting .164 in April.
May 27, 2008
Veteran slugger Jason Giambi has eight hits in his last 20 at-bats (.400 average) against lefties since May 9, according to MLB.com.

Our View:He is a good option for tonight against Orioles' lefty Brian Burres. He is hitless in his last two games, but is hitting .321 in May.
May 24, 2008
Jason Giambi hit a three-run homer as the Yankees improved to 5-0 against the Mariners this season. Giambi was 3-for-4 adding a double and single to his long ball. He scored twice and raised his average nearly twenty points (.234) with the three-hit performance.

Our View:Giambi and the rest of the Yankee bats had a field day against Seattle starter Carlos Silva, how has hit hard times after a solid April start.
May 9, 2008
Jason Giambi homered in the second inning of Friday's loss to the Tigers. The home run was hit off lefty Kenny Rogers, giving him 184 with the Yankees, passing Tommy Henrich and tying Charlie Keller for 16th place in team history.

Our View:Giambi's home run was his seventh of the season.
April 18, 2008
Jason Giambi continues to struggle against anyone not named Mike Timlin. The first baseman went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts on Thursday and is batting .125. Two of his five hits and both of his homers this year have come off of Timlin. "I think his at-bats have been pretty good," manager Joe Girardi tells the New York Post. "Like I've said all along, he's run into bad luck. He's hit some balls hard. I really don't have any concerns with him. I think he's going to be really productive."

Our View:We don't share Giradi's optimism. Giambi has been awful for nearly a full calendar year.
April 13, 2008
Apparently the Red Sox are the only team that can't figure out Jason Giambi. He went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and two runs on Sunday. Coming into this weekend, Giambi had only one hit, but he managed to smack two long balls in the series against the Red Sox.

Our View:Way to push that average over .100, Jason.
April 8, 2008
Jason Giambi was back in the lineup Tuesday after missing two games with a sore left groin, according to the AP. The veteran is off to a horrible start this year, with just one hit in his first 12 at-bats, so perhaps a little time off will do him some good.
April 7, 2008
Jason Giambi did not play on Sunday due to a sore left groin, but manager Joe Girardi tells the New York Post that the slugger was available to pinch-hit. Wilson Betemit started in his place. Giambi isn't a lock to play on Monday and is day-to-day.
April 6, 2008
Jason Giambi is questionable for Sunday action due to his sore groin, according to the SportsNetwork. He only has one hit over 12 at-bats this season.
April 5, 2008
Jason Giambi left the Yankees game on Saturday after five innings because of a sore groin and he is being listed as day-to-day, this according to the AP. Giambi still has 30-HR power if he can remain on the field, but at this point we just don't know how often that will occur. Giambi has begun the year going 1-for-11, so the Yankees may be better off with Wilson Betemit or Morgan Ensberg in the lineup for a while.
April 2, 2008
Jason Giambi got his season off to a slow start on Tuesday as he went 0-for-3 against Toronto, while leaving three men on base. He enjoyed a solid spring training and should bounce back fine.

Jason Giambi returned to action on Saturday and was the designated hitter. He should play first base on Sunday, according to the New York Daily News. Giambi had been out since Tuesday due to back spasms.
February 27, 2008
Manager Joe Girardi would like to play Jason Giambi a lot at first base this year, but he insists that the position is an open competition. Shelley Duncan, Morgan Ensberg and Wilson Betemit are also in the mix at first. "We have more parts than positions, but they're good parts," Girardi said in the New York Daily News. "We're trying to figure out how to get the best out of everyone." Giambi is obviously the favorite to get most of the playing time, but he could also start in the DH slot. Duncan could get a lot of starts against lefties, while Ensberg and Betemit offer the most versatility.
February 20, 2008
Jason Giambi did more running this offseason and apparently is in terrific shape this spring, according to the New York Daily News. Manager Joe Girardi said he plans to use Giambi at first base as often as possible this season, so he can split left field and DH between Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui. Giambi's entering the final year of his contract, so he has a lot to play for this season.
