Adding insult to injury the Yankees have to pay $26.9 million, their highest luxury tax in three years, after not even making the playoffs in 2008, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:The Detroit Tigers were the only other team required to pay a luxury tax. Their tab was a bit smaller at just $1.3 million. However, like the Yankees, the Tigers also missed the postseason.

The Yankees are ending their sponsorship deal with General Motors, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:GM's financial troubles are the reason for this decision. Toyota and Audi will replace GM as the Yankees' auto sponsors and will be featured on signs inside the new Yankee Stadium.
November 13, 2008
Derek Jeter won his third straight Silver Slugger on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

Our View:Jeter's offensive game has fallen off a bit as he's getting on in age. 2008 was the first time in his career that he failed to score 100 runs in a season in which he played at least 148 games.
November 8, 2008
Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter said he and free agent pitcher CC Sabathia have spoken about the organization, according to the New York Daily News. "He's asked questions about us," Jeter said.

Our View:The Yankees will be players for the big lefty, but Sabathia is said to prefer the Left Coast. Either way, he's performing his due diligence in anticipation of a huge offer.
October 10, 2008
Derek Jeter and co. will have some comfortable new surroundings when they move into the clubhouse of the new Yankee Stadium, according to the Orange County Register. Robert Kuwada reports that they will have underground parking with elevators to the clubhouse, which will be 25,000 square feet.

Our View:It will also have a giant weight room, a kitchen with a staff and computers at every locker.
September 27, 2008
Updating a previous report, Derek Jeter has been ruled out for the final regular two games of the regular season according to the Providence Journal.

Our View:Jeter tallied the least runs scored of his entire career and his second least RBI since 2003 when he only played 119 games. His .300 batting average was his lowest since he hit .292 in 2004.
September 27, 2008
Derek Jeter will sit out Saturday's game with Boston according to the Journal News. He did not seem optimistic about playing on Sunday. He left Friday's game against Boston in the third inning due to a sore left hand.

Our View:Don't count on the Yankee captain contributing to your fantasy squad the rest of the season.
September 26, 2008
Derek Jeter left Friday's game against Boston in the third inning due to a sore left hand, according to the AP.

Our View:The injury bothered him since being hit by a pitch on Saturday. The Yankees are out of the playoff race, and there was no need for Jeter to keep playing and risk further injury.
September 23, 2008
Yankees chairman Hank Steinbrenner is angry, and he won't take it anymore, according to Yankees.com. He hates the fact there are divisions, and does not think it's fair that teams with better records than others get left out of the playoffs. "Baseball went to a multi-division setup to create more races, rivalries and excitement. But it isn't fair. ... "What if the Yankees finish the season with more wins than the Dodgers, but the Dodgers make the playoffs? Does that make the Dodgers a better team? No," Steinbrenner said. He also added the fact that the Cardinals won the World Series in 2006 was "ridiculous."

Our View:We wonder if Steinbrenner will go into Bud Selig's office, stomp his feet and hold his breath until Selig changes these completely unfair divisions. It has gotten to the point where Steinbrenner doesn't realize people are lauging at him, not with him.
September 23, 2008

September 16, 2008

Our View:Jeter's average stands at .306 and he appears on pace to get his tenth season of hitting over .300. The Yankee legend has never hit lower than .291 in 13 seasons of being a regular.
September 16, 2008
Derek Jeter has six games left at Yankee Stadium, and he will need to get one more base knock to pass Lou Gehrig for the most hits in the history of Yankee Stadium, according to the New York Post.

Our View:You can count on Jeter doing just that, barring an injury of some sort. He has picked up his play in September, and is finally over the .300 mark that fantasy owners had been waiting for.
September 14, 2008
Jeter continued his recent hot streak on Sunday, going 3-for-4 with his 11th home run of the season. He also tied Lou Gehrig's record for most hits in Yankee Stadium.

Our View:Congrats to Jeter, who is hitting well above .400 in September and has three hits in three consecutive games.
September 13, 2008
Derek Jeter went 3-for-3 with a run scored in Saturday's close 6-5 win over the Rays in the nightcap of the doubleheader. All three of his knocks were singles.

September 8, 2008
Derek Jeter recorded two hits in Sunday's loss to the Mariners and tied Babe Ruth for second place on the Yankees' all-time hits list with 2,518, according to the NY Post. Lou Gehrig holds the top spot with 2,721 hits.

Our View:One of his hits was a homer, which also tied him with childhood hero Dave Winfield with 205. He also produced his 1,000th RBI.
September 7, 2008
Derek Jeter hit a solo home run, his tenth of the year, in a 2-for-3 day, but the Yankees succumbed to the Mariners, 5-2.

Our View:Jeter's average is getting closer to the .300 mark, as he has hit .345 since August 1. He is no longer an elite option for fantasy owners as he ages, but he remains solid.
September 1, 2008
Derek Jeter produced a full line on Monday with three runs, two hits, two RBI and three walks for the Yankees.

Our View:Jeter hit .345 in July and with his two hits today he has upped his average to .296 on the year. After a pedestrian start to the year, Jeter has started to come on though he will still likely fail to record 100-runs, he currently has 75, for the first time in his career in a season of 500-AB.
August 31, 2008
Like a number of hitters, Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has a difficult time against the pitcher he will face on Sunday, Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay. Jeter is just 19-for-75 (.253) with 21 strikeouts against the big right-hander for his career.

Our View:Jeter has had a great August that had pushed his average near the .300 mark, so fantasy owners with him on their squad hope that outweighs his past failures against Halladay.
August 30, 2008
The Yanks were all about offense today as they battled with the Blue Jays, but the hitting wasn't enough to get the win, falling 7-6 to Toronto. Shortstop Derek Jeter was one of four players making a contribution, going 2-for-4 at the plate with one walk and two runs scored.

Our View:Bobby Abreu, Robinson Cano, and Ivan Rodriguez all went 2-for-4 as well with both Cano and I-Rod jacking homers while Abreu added a stolen base.
August 22, 2008
With a first inning single off of Orioles hurler Radhames Liz, Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter saw his career hit total reach 2,500, according to The Sports Network.

Our View:Jeter was having a ho-hum type of season, but has seen his average rise from .280 to .297 before Friday's game after hitting .392 so far in August. He has always hit for a high average, and will be at 3,000 hits by 2011 at the latest.
August 20, 2008
The Yankees put the Jays to bed with relative ease this evening, winning 5-1 with help from shortstop Derek Jeter, going 3-for-5 at the dish with his eighth homer of the season total two RBIs and two runs scored.

August 14, 2008

August 13, 2008
Derek Jeter was not in Wednesday's lineup after leaving Tuesday's game with a bruised left foot, according to MLB.com.

Our View:Wilson Betemit took Jeter's spot in the lineup at shortstop. The team did not indicate how much time Jeter may miss.
July 23, 2008
Derek Jeter had two hits to push his average up to .285 for the Yankees. The shortstop also scored a run against the Twins.

Our View:Jeter has struggled all year to put together a string of "Jeter-like" effort at the plate, but we are still holding out hope that he will be able to hit .300 when all is said an done. He remains a bottom tier starter in mixed leagues.
July 12, 2008
Derek Jeter went 2-for-5 and collected three RBI in Saturday's 9-4 victory over the Blue Jays in Toronto. He hit a single and a solo home run, his fifth of the season.

Our View:Jeter hit his first homer since June 13, snapping a 24-game drought. He also registered his fourth multi-hit game of July, and tied his season-high in RBI with three.
July 8, 2008
Derek Jeter hit a go-ahead double in the eighth and finished the night 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

Our View:Jeter remains as steady as ever and we could see his average climb over .300 before long. Unfortunately, his days of stealing 20-plus bases seem to be over. He has just five this season.
July 1, 2008

Our View:Jeter is only hitting .278 on the season, but his recent streak has helped his batting average climb nine points on the month. Expect the career .316 hitter to keep raising his average.
June 23, 2008
Yankees' shortstop Derek Jeter has taken over the lead in the AL All-Star voting on Monday, according to the AP. Jeter has received 1,988,251 votes, giving him a lead of less than 6,000 over DH David Ortiz, who remains on the DL with his wrist injury.

Our View:Jeter also has an 800,000-vote advantage at shortstop over Michael Young of the Rangers, meaning he will have a good shot to start the All-Star Game on his home turf of Yankee Stadium on July 15.
June 21, 2008
Derek Jeter went 2-for-5 in Saturday's 6-0 loss to the Reds.

Our View:That was his fifth multi-hit game of June, and he maintains a .300 average (24-for-80) in the month.
June 17, 2008
Derek Jeter commented on the Mets' firing of skipper Willie Randolph, according to the NY Post. Jeter is sorry to see him let go by the Mets, and added, "I feel bad for Willie. It's unfortunate. I know how much he cares about winning and how hard he works. Hopefully he gets another opportunity to manage."

June 13, 2008
Derek Jeter hit a solo homer in the eighth inning off Astros setup man Doug Brocail and the New York Yankees defeated Houston 2-1 on Friday night.

Our View:Jeter is finally over the hand injury that put him in a semi-slump in May. The All Star shortstop is hitting .271 on the season, a number that should rise as the Yankees visit some hitter-friendly ballparks in the next three weeks.
June 1, 2008
Derek Jeter hit his third home run of the season and was the lone Yankees run producer in a 6-1 loss to the Twins on Sunday afternoon.

Our View:It's gone mostly unnoticed, but since Derek Jeter was hit on the hand on May 20th, he's hit under .200 and done so without any power. The All Star shortstop has looked more comfortable at the plate the last two days which might be a sign his hand is finally getting healthy.
May 26, 2008
It's gone mostly unnoticed, but since Derek Jeter was hit on the hand in last Tuesday's game against the Orioles, he is 1-for-20 at the plate.

Our View:Jeter was 0-for-3 on Monday and his [last Tuesday] .300 plus batting average is now down to .282. It's unlikely that Jeter has lost his typical aggressive nature at the plate. It is, however, suspected he isn't 100 percent and the injury is affecting his hand strength.
May 21, 2008
As he earlier insisted, Derek Jeter has in fact returned to the Yankees' lineup Wednesday, according to the AP. X-rays taken during Tuesday night's game against Baltimore were negative, as Jeter was diagnosed with a contusion after being hit by a Daniel Cabrera pitch on his left hand. That was the third time he has been hit by a pitch this season.

Our View:Jeter thinks he will be fine, and he will try and help the Yankees end a four game losing skid today.
May 21, 2008
Derek Jeter is officially listed as day-to-day after being drilled on the left hand by a Daniel Cabrera pitch on Tuesday, according to the NY Daily News. X-rays taken during Tuesday night's game were negative, as Jeter was diagnosed with a contusion, and he said, "Fortunately, it's not broken. I should be okay for Wednesday." Manager Joe Girardi added, "We'll look at how sore he is and how swollen it is. I wouldn't be surprised if he can't play, but I wouldn't be surprised if Derek finds a way to play. That's the type of player he is. He got hit pretty hard. There aren't too many days he sits out. My gut tells me he's going to be pretty sore, but there are a lot of days that people don't think Derek will play and he goes out there."

Our View:Jeter insists he'll be back in the lineup Wednesday as the Yankees try to snap their four-game losing streak. Pencil him into your lineups with caution.
May 20, 2008
Following up on an earlier report Derek Jeter was hit on his left hand by a pitch Tuesday night, forcing him out of the Yankees' game against Baltimore, and the teams nearly came to blows when New York tried to retaliate three innings later, this according to the AP. Friday's subway series opener between the Yankees and Mets has been postponed due to rain, according to the AP.
May 15, 2008
Derek Jeter continued his strange season with two hits and an RBI on Thursday for the Yankees.

Our View:Jeter is hitting a solid .302, but he has just one home run and not a single stolen base through 36 games, a shocking revelation for the HOF bound Jeter. Based on his track record, you have to think that a run of SB and HR will be coming shortly.
May 10, 2008
The Yankees put the hurt to the Detroit Tigers, 5-2, today, an effort led by SS Derek Jeter . Jeter went 2-for-5 on the day, hitting his first home run of the year to drive in his 18th RBI of the season.

April 25, 2008
Derek Jeter has fared well over his career against Paul Byrd, tonight's opposing pitcher for Cleveland, according to MLB.com. Jeter is 11-for-27 (.407) with three doubles and a triple against the Indians' righty.

Our View:Jeter isn't back to full speed following his leg ailment, but he can still make an impact with his bat, and looks to have another solid outing tonight in Cleveland.
April 23, 2008
Derek Jeter is one double away from equaling Joe DiMaggio for fifth on the Yankees' all-time list with 389, according to MLB.com. He will take aim at the milestone tonight against the White Sox at US Cellular Field.

Our View:Jeter isn't back to full speed following his leg ailment, but he can still get the job done with his bat since he has raised his average from .241 to .283 over his last eight games.
April 16, 2008
Derek Jeter upped his average to .324 thanks to two hits on Wednesday night. Jeter also scored twice and had two RBI as did Jason Giambi.

Our View:Jeter is still favoring the leg a bit, but that isn't stopping him from slapping line drives to right field from the #2 hole in the Yankees order.
April 15, 2008
Derek Jeter has a good track record against Edwin Jackson, tonight's opposing hurler for Tampa Bay, according to MLB.com. The elite shortstop is 4-for-11 with a homer and three RBI over his career against Jackson.

Our View:Jeter could have continued success, but Jackson is off to a strong start however, with a 2-0 record and 0.64 ERA. This should be a good match-up to follow tonight.
April 14, 2008
Derek Jeter will return to the Yankees' lineup at shortstop tonight against the Rays, according to the AP. The All-Star shortstop hasn’t played since leaving a game on April 7 due to a strained left quadriceps muscle.

April 14, 2008

Our View:We will keep you posted on his status for tonight.
April 13, 2008
It is believed Yankee SS Derek Jeter is likely to return on Monday night against the Tampa Bay Rays, according to the New York Post.

Our View:Jeter has been running in pregame workouts and was spotted taking batting practice and fielding ground balls before Saturday’s matchup with the Boston Red Sox. If there are no problems moving forward with additional workouts today, Jeter should be in the lineup when the Yanks travel to St. Petersburg on Monday night.
April 12, 2008
The Yankees still have not allowed Derek Jeter to test his injured leg, according to NewsDay. He may have run on Friday if not for the wet field, and still could run Saturday or Sunday. He noted the weather as being a problem. GM Cashman added, "I would assume that he'd be out for the Boston series. I'm mentally looking towards Tampa, but we'll see, you never know."

Our View:We will keep you posted on his status.
April 11, 2008
Derek Jeter will likely miss Friday's game against the hated rival Red Sox due to his quad ailment, according to the AP. He is expected to take ground balls, play catch and could possibly taking batting practice on Friday, but Manager Joe Girardi isn’t taking any chances, as he stated, "We have to know he can’t re-injure it. That’s when we are looking at six weeks." Jeter’s status for the remainder of the three-game series is unknown.
April 8, 2008
Derek Jeter is reportedly going to be out of action until at least Friday due to his left quad injury, according to MLB.com. The earliest he could possibly return is Friday, when the Yankees battle rival Boston. Girardi added, "It's hard to say when he can return. He probably won't play in this series, and we'll shoot for the Red Sox series. We'll see where he's at after a couple of days and try to make a real evaluation. We feel that it's not going to be two weeks. We're hoping sometime in the Boston series he'll be ready, but we'll have to see how he progresses." Wilson Betemit notably started at shortstop today against the Royals.
April 7, 2008
Derek Jeter was forced to leave the Yankees game on Monday after injuring his left quadriceps. There is no word on the severity of the injury, but the fact that he stayed in the game for a half-inning on defense after the injury occurred would seem to mean that this could be a short-term issue. Stay tuned for an update.
March 30, 2008
