Dmitrij Jaskin notches first NHL goal 12-28-2013
Dmitrij Jaskin RW STL
Dmitrij Jaskin scored his first NHL goal in his second career game. Jaskin was sent back down to the AHL during the holiday break, but he was with the Blues on Saturday and figures to at least stick until Alexander Steen (concussion) is healthy. Jaskin scored in the second period against the Blackhawks. He played 9:37 and finished with a minus-one rating.
Vladimir Tarasenko progressing for Blues 12-28-2013
Vladimir Tarasenko RW STL
Vladimir Tarasenko recorded three points in the Blues' 6-5 shootout win over the Blackhawks on Saturday night. Tarasenko scored and assisted twice. It might take some more time for Tarasenko to develop into a must-own fantasy forward, but he is progressing nicely, especially considering he had never played in North America until last season. The 22-year-old has 12 goals and 20 points in 37 games; he had eight and 19 in 38 games last season. Maxim Lapierre, Patrik Berglund and Jaden Schwartz picked up goals, while Dmitrij Jaskin notched his first. Ian Cole had two helpers.
Halak struggles; Elliott gets win in relief 12-28-2013
Brian Elliott G CAL
Brian Elliott earned the win in relief Saturday as the Blues topped the Blackhawks 6-5 in the shootout. Jaroslav Halak was pulled for the start of the second period after giving up three goals on 13 shots. Elliott faced 19 shots and made 17 saves. Halak has a 2.40 goals-against average and .907 save percentage. After this performance, it wouldn't be surprising to see him continue to cede more starts to Elliott in the coming games, the first of which will be Sunday against the Stars. Elliott has a 2.05 goals-against average and .918 save percentage.
Patrick Kane can't be stopped: 1G, 2A in loss 12-28-2013
Patrick Kane RW CHI
Patrick Kane extended his points streak to 14 games in Chicago's 6-5 shootout loss to the Blues on Saturday night. Kane scored and tallied two helpers. With more maturity and focus, Kane is taking his already-stellar game to another level this season. The 25-year-old has 23 goals (third in the league), 30 assists (sixth in the league) and 53 points, which is second-most in the league. Patrick Sharp, Andrew Shaw, Brandon Saad and Brent Seabrook were the other players who lit the lamp for the Blackhawks.
Antti Raanta leaky in 6-5 SO loss to Blues 12-28-2013
Antti Raanta G NYR
Antti Raanta was roughed up Saturday night, allowing five goals in the Blackhawks' 6-5 shootout setback against the Blues. Raanta was asked to make only 25 saves, so he clearly was not on his game in this one. The Blackhawks had a 5-3 lead in the third period and saw that disappear as Raanta gave up two goals on six third-period shots. Raanta has a 2.38 goals-against average and .906 save percentage.
Mike Fisher's late goal sinks Predators 12-28-2013
Mike Fisher C NAS
Mike Fisher led the Predators to a 3-2 win with three points against the Kings on Saturday night. Fisher scored the game-winner with 27 seconds left and he had one at 16:42 of the final frame. He also assisted on Patric Hornqvist's first-period tally. The Predators will need to generate more offense to claw back into this race. Fisher's goal snapped a nine-game goal drought. He has nine goals and 16 points this season.
Marek Mazanec earns first win in a month 12-28-2013
Marek Mazanec G NAS
Marek Mazanec made 26 saves in the Predators' 3-2 win over the Kings on Saturday night. The Predators aren't scoring enough, so there's even more pressure on their inexperienced netminders to be flawless. Mazanec's win was his first since Nov. 27. He has a 2.68 goals-against average and .911 save percentage this season.
Anze Kopitar's two points not enough in loss 12-28-2013
Anze Kopitar C LA
Anze Kopitar sniped a goal for the Kings, who lost to the Predators on Saturday night 3-2. Kopitar also had an assist, and he now has points in three straight games. The talented center has 12 goals and 21 assists in 39 games this season, while also posting a league-leading plus-21 rating. Jeff Carter picked up the other goal with the Kings' net empty to tie the game at two late in the third, though that score lasted 10 seconds. Slava Voynov, Drew Doughty and Dwight King recorded assists.
Ben Scrivens allows three on 31 in loss 12-28-2013
Ben Scrivens G MON
Ben Scrivens gave up three goals on 31 shots in Los Angeles' 3-2 loss to the Predators on Saturday night. After Martin Jones gave up five goals in a loss before the Christmas break, Kings coach Darryl Sutter turned to Scrivens in the first game back. We think Scrivens would want another crack at the game-winning goal with 27 seconds left as he got a piece of it with his glove but couldn't fully corral it before it crossed the line. Scrivens has a 1.76 goals-against average and .938 save percentage this season. Jones will probably get the next chance on Monday against the Blackhawks.
Saku Koivu's big night keeps Ducks rolling 12-28-2013
Saku Koivu C ANA
Saku Koivu had a hand in all three goals for the Ducks in their 3-2 overtime win over the Coyotes on Saturday night. Koivu scored twice -- one was the game-winner 51 seconds into OT -- and assisted. The days of him being a key fantasy player are long gone, but he's showing he's still got a little left in the tank with four points over his last four games. The 39-year-old has five goals and 11 points on the season. Andrew Cogliano scored the other goal, with Daniel Winnik picking up two assists. The Ducks have now won 10 straight games.
Jonas Hiller helps Ducks win 10th straight 12-28-2013
Jonas Hiller G CAL
Jonas Hiller made 23 saves in the Ducks' 3-2 overtime win against the Coyotes on Saturday night. Hiller appeared to have a regulation win locked up ... until he gave up a goal with 44 seconds left to Mike Ribeiro. Anaheim has now won 10 straight and everything is clicking right now, including Hiller, who has really found his game in December, not allowing more than two goals in any contest. He has a 2.41 goals-against average and .913 save percentage this season.
Mike Ribeiro lights lamp in loss to Ducks 12-28-2013
Mike Ribeiro C NAS
Mike Ribeiro scored for the Coyotes in their 3-2 overtime loss to the Ducks on Saturday night. Ribeiro's goal at 19:16 of the third period essentially gave Phoenix a point in this one. Ribeiro has proven to be a solid point producer wherever he plays; he now has 10 goals and 29 points this season. Martin Hanzal had the other goal. Keith Yandle, Oliver Ekman-Larsson and Michael Stone had the assists.
Thomas Greiss solid in overtime loss 12-28-2013
Thomas Greiss G NYI
Thomas Greiss continued his solid season backing up Mike Smith, though he came up on the wrong end of a 3-2 overtime decision against the Ducks. Greiss made 38 saves in the loss in his first start since Dec. 10. He has a 2.20 goals-against average and .926 save percentage in nine games this season.
Cory Conacher a factor for Senators 12-28-2013
Cory Conacher LW TB
Cory Conacher scored and assisted for the Senators in their 4-3 win over the Bruins on Saturday night. It's been a disappointing season for the 24-year-old who had 24 points in 35 games in 2012-13, his rookie season. This year he has just four goals and 11 points, though two of those goals have come in the past three games. Patrick Wiercioch, Zack Smith and Bobby Ryan (game-winner) were the other goal scorers. Cody Ceci picked up two assists.
Craig Anderson makes 39 saves in win 12-28-2013
Craig Anderson G OTT
Craig Anderson made 29 saves in Ottawa's 4-3 triumph over the Bruins on Saturday night. At the start of the season, Anderson was a contender for a spot on Team USA. Now, he's trying to save his own job in the NHL. He's won two games in a row now, though he has just a 3.26 goals-against average and .901 save percentage.
Jarome Iginla on a roll with another goal 12-28-2013
Jarome Iginla RW COL
Jarome Iginla lit the lamp for the Bruins on Saturday night in their 4-3 loss to the Senators. Iginla is on a nice little roll right now, with goals in three straight games and points in four straight. With the injuries on this team, the Bruins need their veterans to step up. Iginla has 12 goals and 26 points this season. Daniel Paille and David Warsofsky scored. For Warsofsky, it was his first NHL goal. Torey Krug finished the game a game-low minus-three. This is notable because he might be needed to do a little more with Dennis Seidenberg done for the year.
Tuukka Rask's night ends early, gives up 3 12-28-2013
Tuukka Rask G BOS
Tuukka Rask was yanked early in the second period of the Bruins' 4-3 loss to the Senators on Saturday night. Rask gave up three goals on 12 shots, hitting the showers 29 seconds into the second period. It's the second time in six games Rask has been pulled. With the season-ending injury to Dennis Seidenberg and an injury to Zdeno Chara, who is day-to-day, Rask might face a little more offensive pressure. He has a 1.89 goals-against average and .936 save percentage. Chad Johnson made 17 of 18 saves in relief.
Tomas Plekanec picks up 13th goal in win 12-28-2013
Tomas Plekanec C MON
Tomas Plekanec scored for the Canadiens in their 2-1 shootout win over the Lightning on Saturday night. The forward scored at 5:15 of the second period to give him goals in two straight games. Plekanec has 13 goals and 24 points on the season, so he's not a bad gamble in fantasy leagues because he's pacing around 30 goals for the season. Brian Gionta and Travis Moen had the assists.
Carey Price steady yet again for the Habs 12-28-2013
Carey Price G MON
Carey Price blocked 23 shots as the Canadiens defeated the Lightning 2-1 in the shootout Saturday night. The favorite to be Canada's starting goalie in the Olympics continues his terrific season. Price has always had the talent, and now that he's teamed it with consistency, he's been elite. He has four wins over his last five games, with a 2.06 goals-against average and .932 on the year.
Martin St. Louis stays hot, scores in loss 12-28-2013
Martin St. Louis RW NYR
Martin St. Louis scored for the Lightning in their 2-1 shootout loss to the Canadiens on Saturday night. St. Louis might not come with the fanfare associated with the other stars in the league, but he's every bit as good and exciting to watch. The 38-year-old continues to produce at an excellent clip: 17 goals and 38 points in 38 games. He also has points in six straight games. Brian Gionta and Travis Moen had the assists.
Ben Bishop gives up one, loses in shootout 12-28-2013
Ben Bishop G TB
Ben Bishop gave up only one goal, but he and the Lightning ended up losers, 2-1 in the shootout against the Canadiens. He made 20 saves, and he's helped the Bolts earn points in eight straight games. If the 6-foot-7 netminder had the track record that seems to be so important for coaches during for the Olympics, he'd be a lock for Team USA. Instead, he has to be getting a very close look as he's been fantastic this season. Bishop has a 1.89 goals-against average and .935 save percentage this season.
Henrik Zetterberg scores in return to lineup 12-28-2013
Henrik Zetterberg C DET
Henrik Zetterberg potted a goal for the Red Wings in their 4-3 win over the Panthers on Saturday night. Zetterberg had not played since Dec. 1 due to a herniated disc in his back, but he didn't miss a beat and the Red Wings reaped the rewards immediately. He scored during a first-period power play to give him 12 goals and 31 points on the season. Daniel Alfredsson, Brendan Smith and Gustav Nyquist scored the other goals. Pavel Datsyuk had two assists.
Jonas Gustavsson solid in Detroit's win 12-28-2013
Jonas Gustavsson G EDM
Jonas Gustavsson gave up three goals on 33 shots in Detroit's 4-3 victory over the Panthers on Saturday night. The Red Wings have now won three of their last four games, all of the wins started by Gustavsson. With the team getting healthier, it might not be a bad idea to take a chance on the netminder in any fantasy leagues in which he's available. He has a 2.35 goals-against average and .915 save percentage, with an 11-3-2 record.
Sean Bergenheim scores twice in loss 12-28-2013
Sean Bergenheim LW ANA
Sean Bergenheim scored twice for the Panthers, but it wasn't enough as the Panthers fell 4-3 to the Red Wings on Saturday night. Bergenheim now has goals in two straight games, which sounds great until you realize he has only seven on the year, to go along with 10 points. Nick Bjugstad scored the other goal for Florida. Brian Campbell, Aleksander Barkov, Dylan Olsen and Marcel Goc notched the helpers.
Scott Clemmensen can't save Panthers vs. Det. 12-28-2013
Scott Clemmensen G NJ
Scott Clemmensen made 27 saves in Florida's 4-3 loss to the Red Wings on Saturday night. The Panthers were on a nice five-game run in mid-December, but now they've lost three straight games. Clemmensen has the ability to string together a few good starts, but the reality is he's nothing more than an NHL backup who is exposed when he plays a lot. The goaltender has a 2.99 goals-against average and .892 save percentage this season.
Travis Zajac gets game-winner for Devils 12-28-2013
Travis Zajac C NJ
Travis Zajac scored the game-winning goal for the Devils in their 2-1 victory over the Islanders on Saturday night. Four years ago, Zajac appeared to be on the cusp of becoming one of the great young centers in the game. Since back-to-back 20-goal, 62-plus-point seasons, though, he's been nothing fantasy owners should be clamoring for. This goal was his seventh, and he has 18 points on the season. Adam Henrique notched the other marker. Reid Boucher, Michael Ryder, Marek Zidlicky and Jaromir Jagr recorded assists.
Cory Schneider makes 30 saves in win 12-28-2013
Cory Schneider G NJ
Cory Schneider made 30 saves in the Devils' 2-1 win over the Islanders on Saturday night. Schneider was on his game in this one, giving up the lone goal midway through the third period. This was his first start in five outings in which he posted a plus-.900 save percentage, and it's his first win since Nov. 30. Altogether, he has a 2.13 goals-against average and .914 save percentage.
Frans Nielsen runs points streak to five 12-28-2013
Frans Nielsen C DET
Frans Nielsen notched a goal for the Islanders, who fell 2-1 to the Devils on Saturday night. The 29-year-old is setting himself up for easily the best season of his career. He already has 12 goals and 29 points, the same total he had in 48 games last year. His career-high in goals is 17 and his career-high in points 47. The center has a point streak of five games. Kyle Okposo and Thomas Vanek got the assists.
Evgeni Nabokov gives up two on 25 shots 12-28-2013
Evgeni Nabokov G TB
Evgeni Nabokov kicked away 23 shots in the Islanders' 2-1 loss to the Devils on Saturday night. Navokov has now alternated wins and losses in each of his last four games. He might provide some more stability for the Isles, but that's not saying much and he's not worth rostering in fantasy leagues. He has a 2.88 goals-against average and .902 save percentage ... and he plays on a team with just 11 wins.
Willie Mitchell returns for the Kings 12-28-2013
Willie Mitchell D FLA

This will be his first time playing against the Flyers since he was bought out of a nine-year, $51 million contract just two years into the deal. Anton Volchenkov D NAS
Anton Volchenkov won't be in the lineup for New Jersey on Saturday because he is experiencing "total body soreness."

That's a new one. Consider Volchenkov day-to-day for the time being. The Devils were going to dress seven defensemen Saturday night, but now their down to six so Eric Gelinas may not get to see time at forward as originally planned.
Corey Crawford is likely to return next week 12-28-2013
Corey Crawford G CHI
Corey Crawford (lower body) is likely to return to Chicago's lineup next week.

Chris Kuc on Twitter
Coach Joel Quenneville believes Crawford will be back for either Thursday's game against the New York Islanders or Friday's contest versus the New Jersey Devils. Antti Raanta has played well during Crawford's absence, but he'll lose a great deal of fantasy value when the Blackhawks get their number one goalie back.

He hasn't picked up a point in his last seven outings and has just two goals in his last 20 contests. "Once again, the same old story," said Couture. "Had a lot of good looks, missed the net on a lot of good looks. [Mike Smith] made some good saves on me. That's the way it goes. Goal-scorers go through stretches were everything goes in, and then nothing goes in. Hopefully, I can get one soon, because it's not fun not scoring." The slump could cost him a spot on Team Canada for the Sochi Olympics as well. Since he's been getting his fair share of chances, we don't think he'll go much longer without scoring.

Alexander Steen has a concussion, goes on IL 12-28-2013
Alexander Steen C STL
Alexander Steen will be out of action indefinitely due to a concussion.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Well, Steen owners worst fears were realized. The good news is that Steen is already exercising. The bad news is that this is Steen's second concussion. During the 2011-12 season he missed 39 games due to concussion symptoms. For now, consider Steen out of action on an indefinite basis. However, he could return in a matter of days or a week or two. With concussions you never know.

Seth Jones return to Dallas not a happy one 12-28-2013
Seth Jones D CLB
Seth Jones, who grew up in Arlington as the son of former Dallas Maverick basketball player Popeye Jones, did not have a very successful return to his hometown.

The Nashville Tennessean
He played only 11:01 and was minus one in a 4-1 loss to the Stars. Jones has struggled the past month after a hot start to the season and Preds' coach Barry Trotz is trying to find the right balance of playing time for the talented rookie. "He wants to be a good player," Trotz said. "He understands and he absorbs coaching. From an issue standpoint, there's really no issues. He's just a young guy playing in a man's game. He got a little worn out, and we reduced his minutes. Now, we're trying to find the right level of minutes for him." Until this gets sorted out we would bench Jones if you have another alternative.
Mazanec likely stater v Kings 12-28-2013
Marek Mazanec G NAS
Although Predators' coach Barry Trotz has not named a starting goalie for Saturday night's game against the Kings, we are betting it will be Marek Mazanec. Carter Hutton was in goal for Friday night's 4-1 loss to Dallas and it stands to reason that Mazanec will get the call the day after.

Howeever, Parise returned to the lineup after missing only one game. it appears however, that Parise's injury has worsened as a result of him playing. Isles' John Tavares out Saturday with LBI 12-28-2013
John Tavares C NYI
John Tavares is expected to have his streak of 246 consecutive games played ended Saturday night because of a lower-body injury.
The Islanders haven't said much about the ailment, but coach Jack Capuano said it's something that has been lingering and not something Tavares picked up in Monday's win over Detroit. "I'm concerned, obviously," Capuano said Saturday morning. "You know what Johnny is to our hockey club. He's not only our leader, but obviously his play speaks for itself. But at this particular time, he's not ready to go. We're not going to put him in a situation where he can further hurt himself. You just be cautious with it, and hopefully he'll feel better tomorrow." Tavares has 39 points in 38 games this year and his presence in the lineup will obviously be greatly missed.
Wilson gets plenty of ice time in return 12-28-2013

Ryan Wilson received plenty of ice time against the Blackhawks Friday night in his return to action.
Wilson, who had not played in a game since November 6th due to a back injury, was on the ice for 21:25, second most on the team. He also skated on the team's power-play unit and took a number of shifts on the penalty kill. For his part, Wilson wasn't trying to do too much after missing seven weeks of games. "I just try and play my game, whatever I think I need to do that night," Wilson said. "Not do too much. Coming back from an injury like this, I'm going to be a little nervous and everything is going to be moving pretty quick but the thing is you have to keep it simple and play your game and just enjoy it." Wilson is only rosterable in the deepest of hockey pools.

Howard could be back next week, so Gustavsson might be relegated to the bench again.

Although it is far from confirmed, look for James Reimer to get the start against the Hurricanes Sunday. Jonathan Bernier did not look overly sharp against the Sabres Friday night despite stopping all three shots in the shootout of a 4-3 victory. He looked weak on the Sabres' two first-period goals and gave up the tying goal with 24 seconds left in the game. Coach Randy Carlyle may turn to Reimer against Carolina as a result.

With Red Deer of the WHL, Petrovic registered two PIMs per game over his final two junior seasons and in 90 AHL games he has amassed 148 PIMs. Looks like a good source of PIMs to us. who will miss 2-3 weeks while recovering from a broken orbital bone.
Doozy of a goalie controversy in Washington 12-28-2013
Philipp Grubauer G WAS
Sooner or later, the Washington Capitals are going to have to decide what they want to do with their goaltending situation.
Given that Michal Neuvirth and Braden Holtby are both inked to one-way contracts that run through 2014-15, the simplest solution would be to return Philipp Grubauer to the minors, but Grubauer is doing everything in his power to make sure it isn't that simple. He took advantage of another opportunity Friday night by saving 38 of 40 shots in Washington's 3-2 win over the New York Rangers. The 22-year-old rookie now has a 5-1-1 record, 2.18 GAA and .937 save percentage in eight games. With starting Vancouver goaltender Roberto Luongo sidelined by a suspected groin strain for seven to 10 days, Eddie Lack becomes the the Canucks' puck-stopper, and he's confident.

"Roberto is our No. 1 but now that he's out, it's time for me to step up. I'm just trying to take it day-by-day and not think too much about where I've been. I've only been thinking about what I can do to get better." Canucks coach John Tortorella says he has confidence in Lack, as well. "We have total confidence in his play. So he steps in. I'm not sure what's going to happen with Roberto but Lacker plays Sunday and we'll see where we go from there. Obviously he has given us flexibility in certain situations and picked up points for us, which was very important in the first half of the year." Sidney Crosby will miss winger Pascal Dupuis 12-28-2013
Pascal Dupuis LW PIT
Pascal Dupuis, who will have ACL knee surgery and is likely out for the rest of the season, was a top-line fit for Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who so preferred him that he sought to keep him as a linemate even when Jarome Iginla arrived last season.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Finding wingers who fit with Crosby has proven a great challenge over the years, as his style - skilled grinder with speed and a backhand preference - does not easily fit with traditional scoring wingers. Few acquisitions by Pens GM Ray Shero have meshed instantly with Crosby, with Bill Guerin (2009) being the exception. Replacing Dupuis in this regard will provide a great challenge to Shero.

Islanders captain John Tavares did not practice with the team Friday because of a lower-body issue and is day-to-day, coach Jack Capuano said.

New York Newsday
Capuano refused to specify the nature of the lower-body injury, what caused it, when it occurred or if Tavares will play tonight at home against the Devils. "Any time your captain is out, you have some concern, there's no question," Capuano said after the team's first practice since the holiday break. "It's a big loss to the team because he's the captain of our team and he's one of the best players in the world," said Kyle Okposo, one of Tavares' linemates. Marc Staal D NYR
Marc Staal is on track to return to the Rangers' lineup at some point during the team's five-game road trip, which started in Washington Friday night and concludes a week from today in Toronto.

NY Post
"I don't want to get too far ahead of myself, but it is definitely not out of the question," the defenseman said. "It will be good to have a full practice. But knowing the types of steps it takes to get back, I'm on the right track." Staal has been sidelined since Dec. 7, when he sustained his second recorded concussion within 33 months. The alternate captain, who will turn 27 in a little over two weeks, has been skating since Dec. 21. "It will be good to bump a little in practice, but there's really no comparison to the hitting that goes on in a game," Staal said. "Once you have the confidence that you feel well enough to take a hit, you take that confidence into the game that you're going to be OK. Once I get my wind and my legs back, I'll re-assess and go from there." Staal is unlikely to play Sunday in Tampa, but he could return New Year's Eve in Sunrise, Fla., for the match against the Panthers.

Devils forward Ryane Clowe played his first game Friday night since suffering a concussion Oct. 13 and didn't score any points.

Newark Star-Ledger
But he had four hits and a blocked shot in the Devils' 2-1 shootout loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. "I felt good," Clowe said. "Obviously the first couple of shifts were on adrenalin and excitement. After the first shift I didn't know if my legs were going to seize up. I was sitting on the bench. Lucky I didn't get out there for another 10 minutes, so I had time to recover. In the first period I felt like I missed 30 games, but in the second I felt really good. I started to have a little bit of jump." Coach Pete DeBoer on Clowe: "I thought he was one of our best forwards. I thought he gave us some good energy and he was physical. He did a great job." Clowe said he isn't sure if he'll play against the Islanders tonight because of the back-to-back games.
Martin Brodeur laments Devils' shootout woes 12-28-2013
Martin Brodeur G STL
The New Jersey Devils are a horrible 0-6 in shootouts this season and veteran goaltender Martin Brodeur is finding it tough.

Newark Star-Ledger
"It's crazy," Brodeur said. "I'm sure guys are not doing it on purpose. It's tough on the guys. It's tough on the goalies for sure. We've practiced it a bit. It's a lot different than the last few years. With some of the guys we had it was kind of an automatic almost. Now it's a struggle."
John Scott scores for only 2nd time in career 12-28-2013
John Scott D ARZ
John Scott scored a goal against the Maple Leafs Friday night.

Buffalo News
Why is this newsworthy you may be asking? It's because it was Scott's second career goal in his 200th NHL game. Scott is known more for his toughness than his offensive ability, but Buffalo coach Ted Nolan has aksed Scott to fight less and has been giving him significantly more ice time as a reward. Good news for Scott but not such good news for those who have Scott on their fantasy squads to bolster their penalty minute totals.

Cory Schneider G NJ
Cory Schneider will be the starting goalie for the New Jersey Devils when they visit the New York Islanders tonight.

Ladislav Smid has blocked 49 shots in 20 games for the Calgary Flames this season after being traded to them by the Edmonton Oilers on Nov. 8.

Edmonton Journal
"Smid was on my wish list for a long time," said Calgary coach Bob Hartley, who has promoted Smid to the Flames' top defense pair along with captain Mark Giordano. "He's an in-your-face defenseman. He'll sacrifice anything and we needed veterans who want to win. He's been a very pleasant addition to our hockey club." Said Edmonton goalie Devan Dubnyk: "You can't care about getting hurt if you block shots, and Ladi certainly (doesn't) care." Smid hopes to be in Sochi, playing for the Czechs, in his first Olympics.
Julien believes Reilly Smith is real deal 12-28-2013
Reilly Smith RW FLA
Boston coach Claude Julien believes that Reilly Smith is the real deal.

Smith, who leads the Bruins with 14 goals and is second in scoring with 30 points (three behind David Krejci), has really impressed Julien this season. In fact, Julien believes that Smith's success is in no way a fluke as he has been "a good player from Day One". If for some reason Smith is still available in your pool, pick him up immediately.
Bruised and swollen Jack Skille contributing 12-28-2013
Jack Skille RW VAN
It has been nine days since Blue Jackets forward Jack Skille blocked a shot in Philadelphia, but his right forearm - from the base of his hand down almost to his elbow - is still swollen and discolored.

Columbus Dispatch
Nonetheless, he is contributing to the Jackets in many ways. The 26-year-old forward has four goals in nine games, despite mostly fourth-line duty. "I want everyone to know that I want to be a key player," Skille said. "Blocking a shot, taking a hit, whatever. This whole team is a bunch of good players and there's real good chemistry here. When we're playing well, it's a tough team to handle. And I want to be part of that."

Calgary Sun

Marchand leads NHL in SHG 12-28-2013
Brad Marchand LW BOS
Brad Marchand leads the NHL with three short-handed goals.
Although he has not had a particularly good half season, Marchand is a fantasy asset to those in hockey pools where short-handed markers are a category. He seems to be playing better in five on five situations as of late skating alongside Reilly Smith and Patrice Bergeron. If you have held on to Marchand all this time, you may finally be realizing a benefit.

On hand Friday in practice for Saturday's game at Nashville was goalie Jonathan Quick, who has been out with a groin injury since mid-November.

Los Angeles Times
It is the first trip Quick is taking with his teammates since he suffered a strained groin at Buffalo on Nov. 12. Quick's presence is a definite sign of progress, considering coach Darryl Sutter had indicated recently he did not think Quick would make this trip. General Manager Dean Lombardi said before the holiday break that Quick might be able to return the first week of January.
Rask white hot in Bruins' net 12-28-2013

CSN New England
Over that span, Rask sports a 4-0-0 record with a 0.75 goals against average and a .976 save percentage. He has recorded two shutouts and has allowed only three goals on 123 shots. Even though Rask started for the Bruins Friday night, we wouldn't be shocked if he was back in goal Saturday for the rematch against the Senators.

CSN New England
He sustained what appeared to be a leg injury in the third period of Friday night's 5-0 win over the Sens when he got tangled up with Cory Conacher. Seidenberg did not make the trip to Ottawa and will be evaluated Saturday. Look for the Bruins to recall David Warsofsky to take Seidenberg's place on the roster for Saturday's contest.
Andrew Cogliano drawing big praise from coach 12-28-2013
Andrew Cogliano LW ANA
Andrew Cogliano has 10 goals and 22 points in 39 games, one point short of his total in last season's lockout-shortened schedule.

Los Angeles Times
His work has been crucial to keeping the Ducks at or near the top in the West."He's been good for us every game," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "There's I think maybe two games for us this year where I thought he wasn't a positive factor. And it wasn't through lack of effort, it was just that things weren't going right for him. When you have that consistency from someone, you know you can put him in the lineup every night and you're getting the same kind of game, that's perfect."

Nashville has struggled to find consistency in goal while Pekka Rinne nurses his injury and Hutton has been front and center in these struggles.
