Claude Giroux C PHI
Claude Giroux injured his surgically-repaired wrist Thursday, team sources told Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly.

Tim Panaccio on Twitter
It's not clear what Giroux was doing when he was hurt. Panaccio reports the Flyers aren't sure how seriously Giroux is hurt, but he did withdraw from a golf tournament in Ottawa scheduled for Friday. We'll reserve judgement for now until we hear the nature of the injury. Stay tuned.
Niklas Backstrom has been on ice since June 08-15-2013
Niklas Backstrom G CAL
Niklas Backstrom has been working out on the ice since June, according to beat writer Michael Russo.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune
Backstrom underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia he suffered in pregame warmups before Game 1 of the Wild's first-round playoff series. Coach Michael Yeo said the Wild have to do a better job of parsing out Backstrom's workload this season. While fewer games might limit Backstrom's potential win total, the added benefit he'll get from some extra rest could make his overall numbers stronger.
Clayton Stoner has been cleared to return 08-15-2013
Clayton Stoner D ANA
Clayton Stoner (upper body) has been cleared to return to the ice ahead of training camp.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune
Stoner sustained an unspecified upper-body injury in Game 1 of the Wild's first-round series. The team listed him as day-to-day and they haven't been a ton of updates since. Stoner had 10 points and 42 penalty minutes in 48 games last season.
Dany Heatley says he'll be OK when camp opens 08-15-2013
Dany Heatley RW ANA
Dany Heatley (shoulder) says he feels good and he expects to be ready when training camp opened.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune
Heatley underwent surgery on his shoulder in early April. His injury meant the Wild couldn't use a compliance buyout on him this summer after a third straight sub-par season. Heatley is scheduled to count $5.7 million against the cap this season, the last year of his contract, and only scored 11 goals in 36 games last year. At 32 years old, his peak performance years seem to have passed him by.
Fletcher wants to re-sign Jason Pominville 08-15-2013
Jason Pominville RW MIN
Minnesota Wild GM Chuck Fletcher said he's had a preliminary discussion with Jason Pominville about a contract extension.

Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune
Pominville is eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the 2013-14 season. Fletcher said he'd very much like to re-sign Pominville, but the term and the money have to be the right fit for the Wild. Minnesota is tight against the shrunken salary cap after doling out big deals to Zach Parise and Ryan Suter last summer. Pominville also must prove he's healthy. The former Sabre sustained a concussion last season and was clearly affected by it even after he returned to the ice.

Avs extend Gabriel Landeskog for seven years 08-15-2013
Gabriel Landeskog LW COL
The Colorado Avalanche signed captain Gabriel Landeskog to a seven-year contract extension.

Landeskog is now under contract through the 2020-21 season. The deal comes on the heels of Matt Duchene's five-year extension and shows that the Avs' new front office investment in the team's young core. Landeskog just finished his first season as captain, scoring nine goals and 17 points in an injury-filled, 36-game season. We're expecting a rebound season this year and he should still be drafted in the middle rounds of most drafts.
Lamoriello says sale doesn't affect Henrique 08-15-2013
Adam Henrique C NJ
Lou Lamoriello said the Devils' ownership issues and recent sale have not affected the team's negotiations with Adam Henrique.

Tom Gulitti on Twitter
Henrique remains a restricted free agent despite training camps being slated to open in a couple weeks. Lamoriello and Henrique have both preached patience, with neither seeming publicly concerned about a contract for the third-year center. When asked about the state of talks at Thursday's ownership news conference, Lamoriello said, "He's a Devil." Expect Henrique to be signed before the season starts, although it's possibly talks could stretch into camp.
Prout likely out for preseason after surgery 08-15-2013
Dalton Prout D CLB
Dalton Prout underwent surgery to repair a torn abdomen muscle and will likely miss the entire preseason.

Prout is expected to be sidelined for six weeks, which makes him questionable for the start of the regular season. Prout had a solid rookie year, recording seven points in 28 NHL games. The sophomore defenseman should still get a shot to crack the roster at some point this season, although he may spend some time in the AHL to get his conditioning up to game level.
Alfredsson hints at secret deal with Senators 08-15-2013
Daniel Alfredsson RW DET
Daniel Alfredsson strongly hinted Thursday that he had a verbal agreement with the Ottawa Senators to work out a more lucrative contract for the 2013-14 season after he agreed to a team-friendly deal the last time around.

Ottawa Sun
Alfredsson said the Senators asked him in 2009 to add an extra year worth $1 million to his contract to help bring the salary cap hit down with both sides expecting Alfie to retire before the 2012-13 season. According to Alfredsson, following the 2012 season he approached the Sens' front office when he decided he wanted to play another year. The sides then agreed to look at a contract extension to help balance out Alfie's $1 million salary for 2013, Alfredsson said. The negotiations went "nowhere," Alfredsson said Thursday, but he decided after the season he wanted to play one more year and expected the Sens to honor their agreement from the year before. We all know how that ended. For his part, Sens GM Bob Murray disagreed with Alfredsson's claims and said the former Ottawa captain "threw him under the bus" during Thursday's news conference. Murray said he believes Alfredsson's agent also misrepresented negotiations to his client and said it was Alfie that asked fo
Jeff Skinner could play on Canes' third line 08-15-2013
Jeff Skinner LW CAR
Jeff Skinner could find himself on the third line during training camp.

Raleigh News & Observer
Skinner has spent most of his first three season in the Canes' top six forwards, but coach Kirk Muller says he'll experiment with his line combinations in camp and didn't rule out Skinner falling to the third line. Skinner's name was bandied about in some trade speculation after a rough 2013 season. The 21-year old moved between wing and center, scoring 13 goals and 23 points in 38 games while dealing with some injuries, as well.
Muller says Cam Ward has 'fire in his belly' 08-15-2013
Cam Ward G CAR
Carolina Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller says Cam Ward has "a fire in his belly right now."

Raleigh News & Observer
Ward is coming off a sub-par 2013 season that saw him struggle with a season-ending knee injury and a startlingly low .908 save percentage. Ward also wasn't invited to Canada's Olympic orientation camp and Muller says his goalie plans on playing his way into Olympic consideration despite the slight. We're slightly skeptical about the latter, but this could help spark Ward to one of his better seasons in recent memory.
Joni Pitkanen optimistic, rehab coming along 08-15-2013
Joni Pitkanen D CAR
Joni Pitkanen (heel surgery) is progressing well in his rehab and is optimistic about his recovery.

Raleigh News & Observer
Pitkanen underwent the procedure during in mid-April. GM Jim Rutherford says the mobile defenseman is on schedule and it appears he'll be able to participate in training camp on some level. That said, this is an injury worth monitoring considering Pitkanen's skating ability is a huge part of his game. We'll be watching to see how he's recovering in camp before setting a draft value.
Howard says 'sky's the limit' for DeKeyser 08-15-2013
Danny DeKeyser D DET
Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard says the "sky's the limit" for defenseman Dan DeKeyser.

Detroit News
DeKeyser has had quite the 2013, from being named the CCHA's defnseman of the year while playing at Western Michigan to getting an invite to Hockey USA's Olympic orientation camp. DeKeyser also played a huge role in the Red Wings' surprising run to the Western Conference finals. We expect he'll be a top-four defenseman next season and deserves consideration in most fantasy formats.
Teemu Selanne met with Bob Murray on Tuesday 08-15-2013
Teemu Selanne RW ANA
Teemu Selanne met with Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray on Tuesday.

Orange County Register
Murray characterized the meeting as "positive" but wouldn't say what the two sides discussed or whether Selanne committed to returning for the 2013-14 season. Considering how long he's taken to make this decision, it would be a little surprising if Selanne doesn't return to the Ducks. There also doesn't seem to be another team in the mix, as had been rumored earlier. Stay tuned.
