Poulter defends WGC-HSBC at a different venue 10-28-2013

Ian Poulter fired a final-round 7-under-par 65 in the 2012 World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions to claim the title, and he is set to defend this week.

In the four-year history of this event, Poulter claimed the only edition contested at Mission Hills' Olaz bal Course. The first three events were held at Sheshan International Golf Club, and that will also be the case this season. Don't count the Brit out, as he has a pair of T13s at Sheshan to go with a T45 in 2009.

The most interesting golfer in the world was seen smoking his trademark cigar with chopsticks at last week's BMW Masters, where he finished 60th. We don't have to look very far back to find a runner-up finish at the KLM Open, so form shouldn't be a big issue. In two previous starts in this event, he owns a T38 and a T41.

The South African has competed two times following the Presidents Cup, but hasn't cracked a top 40 in either venture. In fact, one has to go all the way back to a runner-up at the Scottish Open to find anything better than a T43. This will be his first crack at Sheshan International Golf Club, since his only other action in this event came at Mission Hills last year.

Ilonen earned his way into the field this week by virtue of his win at the Nordea Masters. This marks his first start in this event, and he's guaranteed to cash a check since the 78-man field does not include a cut. Since his win, he hasn't cracked a top 30 in his subsequent 11 starts. Given the quality of the field, it's unlikely he makes any real noise this week.
