Tringale birdies last 2; Greenbrier MDF looms 07-05-2013
Cameron Tringale
Cameron Tringale turned in a bogey-free 4-under-par 32-34=66 in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic to make the 36-hole cut on the number at 1-under 139 with a 54-hole cut to come. Tringale stepped on the 17th tee two off the number, then birdied the par-5 17th. With the pressure on, he hit his tee shot on the par-3 18th to eight inches for a kick-in birdie. If he plays like that on Saturday, he will have little trouble earning a tee time for the final round.
Blixt T7 after 36 holes at The Old White TPC 07-05-2013
Jonas Blixt spun a 3-under-par 35-32=67 in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic to reach the weekend in a tie for seventh at 7-under 133. The Swede circled five birdies in his navigation of The Old White TPC, beginning his day on the 10th tee, but a messy double bogey on the par-4 13th ultimately cost him a share of the lead and a final tee time on Saturday. He only hit half of his fairways and greens on the afternoon, but the putter saved him. He picked up well over two strokes on the field in his round.
Gainey nine strokes higher in Greebrier 2nd 07-05-2013
Tommy Gainey
Tommy Gainey followed up an 8-under-par 62 in the opening round of The Greenbrier Classic with a 1-over-par 34-37=71 in round two. Gainey was alone atop the leaderboard after a couple of early birdies to start his day at The Old White TPC, but when he turned his attention to the front nine later in the day he surrendered three bogeys without the benefit of a birdie. The difference was the irons. After finding 15 GIR in the opening round, he only managed seven on Friday afternoon.
Wagner fades in 2nd round @ The Old White TPC 07-05-2013
Johnson Wagner
Johnson Wagner settled for an even-par 36-34=70 in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic, remaining at 8-under 132. Wagner began his day on the 10th tee, giving back an early bogey at the par-4 11th before rebounding to birdie the par-3 15th. Otherwise, it was all pars. While he still found 13 GIR, he digressed with his putter. Rather than gaining 3.716 strokes like he did in the first round, he gave back a little less than a stroke in round two at The Old White TPC.
Every emerges with Greenbrier lead; fires 62 07-05-2013
Matt Every
Matt Every torched The Old White TPC in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic for a bogey-free 8-under-par 32-30=62 and has broken free from a large pack to claim the 36-hole lead at 9-under 131. Every began his day on the back nine and got to work with birdies on the first two holes. He never looked back, eventually drawing eight circles on his card. His irons were on fire, landing 16 GIR, and his putter kept up. The flat stick gained him over four strokes on the field. While the former University of Florida star has yet to win, he's threatened with two runner-up finishes and a third in 74 career starts.
Henley joins lead pack at The Old White TPC 07-05-2013
Russell Henley
Russell Henley surged to the top of the leaderboard in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic with a 5-under-par 32-33=65, reaching the half-way point at 8-under 132. Henley began his round with a kick-in birdie on the par-4 10th, then added three more before the turn. On the front nine at The Old White TPC he traded birdies at the first and fourth with a double bogey at the par-4 fifth, then closed things out with a birdie on the ninth. For the round, he split 11(of 14) fairways and landed 14 GIR. He will try and hoist the second trophy of his rookie season this weekend. He is tied for the lead with Bill Lunde, Daniel Summerhays and Steven Bowditch.
Daly withdraws from The Greenbrier Classic 07-05-2013
John Daly
John Daly pulled out of The Greenbrier Classic three holes into his second round. After opening his week with a 5-over-par 75, he was already 2-over through three holes in round two at The Old White TPC before calling it quits. If and when a reason for his WD is published we will pass it along.
Late bogey drops Bowditch into Greenbrier tie 07-05-2013
Steven Bowditch
Steven Bowditch followed up a 5-under-par 65 in the opening round of The Greenbrier Classic with a 3-under 32-35=67 in the second round to share the lead with Bill Lunde and Daniel Summerhays at 8-under 132 in the clubhouse. Bowditch got off to a hot start at The Old White TPC, beginning on the back nine and circling birdies on 10, 11, 16 and 17. He rolled in a putt from 41'8" on 10, pitched in from 19 yards on 11 and dropped an 18-footer on 16 before a somewhat normal 6'1" birdie on the 17th. He would cool off for his remaining 10 holes, setting for nine pars and a three-putt bogey on the par-3 eighth to lose the lead outright. Like the three he shares the top position with, he has never won on the PGA TOUR.
Owen in the mix at The Greenbrier Classic 07-05-2013
Greg Owen
Greg Owen fired a 4-under-par 31-35=66 in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic and enters the weekend at 7-under 133. Owen began his morning on the 10th hole and circled five birdies without a blemish. He gave back strokes on the fourth and sixth holes, but rebounded to grab a final birdie at the par-4 seventh. His 15 GIR helped him overcome a lackluster day with the putter, where he lost less than a stroke to the field. He does not have a top-20 finish this season, so this could prove to be a pivotal week in his 2013 campaign.
Tom Watson around for weekend at Greenbrier 07-05-2013
Tom Watson
Tom Watson navigated The Old White TPC in 1-under-par 36-33=69 in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic and his 3-under 137 will be good enough for a weekend tee time. While it probably wasn't necessary to secure the cut, lunch will taste a little better on the heels of his 24'4" birdie to end his round at the par-4 ninth. In all, he found four birdies to three bogeys, splitting 12 (of 14) fairways and landing 16 GIR in the process. Had the putter cooperated at all, he could be fighting for a top 10. He lost over a stroke to the field in strokes gained-putting.
Curtis fires a 66 in Greenbrier second round 07-05-2013
Ben Curtis
Ben Curtis circled five birdies and gave back one bogey on the way to a 4-under-par 34-32=66 in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic. Curtis began his round on the 10th hole with a birdie from 8'5", then added a second on the par-5 17th before turning. A bogey at the par-4 second would only derail him briefly, as he would close his day with birdies on three of his final four holes. All told, his birdies ranged in distance from 12 feet to 24 inches. He only missed one fairway and two greens on his lap around The Old White TPC, and has just one bogey through 36 holes.
K. Perry makes the cut at The Old White TPC 07-05-2013
Kenny Perry
Kenny Perry spun a 3-under-par 35-32=67 in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic and will easily make the cut at 5-under 135. Perry flirted with the front page of the leaderboard in his opening round, going out in 29 before playing his back nine 3-over. His second lap around The Old White TPC was a little more balanced of an attack with five birdes and two bogeys spread throughout the course of his round. For the week, he's landed 27 of his 36 GIR. He doesn't have a top 25 on the PGA TOUR since his T19 at the 2010 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
Ridings settles for 69 in Greenbrier 2nd rd. 07-05-2013
Tag Ridings
Tag Ridings followed up a 5-under-par 65 in the opening round of The Greenbrier Classic with a 1-under 36-33=69 in his second lap around The Old White TPC. Ridings picked up four birdies and gave back three bogeys on the morning. All of his major statistical splits took a step back in round two, splitting 11 fairways, 13 GIR and losing a little ground to the field with the putter. He enters the weekend in great position to pick up his third top 20 of the season.
Walker signs for 65 in Greenbrier 2nd round 07-05-2013
Jimmy Walker
Jimmy Walker picked up the pace in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic, putting a 5-under-par 29-36=65 on the board. Walker was hot early in his round at The Old White TPC, posting six birdies without a blemish in his first 11 holes before stalling out. It would be all pars the rest of the way with the exception of a bogey on the par-5 17th. He'll likely find himself just outside of the limelight with 36 holes to go, but his 6-under 134 keeps him within striking distance if he can stay hot the rest of the way. His 11 fairways and 14 GIR led the way, while the putter picked up over three strokes on the field.
Summerhays 8-under thru 36 at the Greenbrier 07-05-2013
Daniel Summerhays
Daniel Summerhays carded a bogey-free 3-under-par 32-35=67 in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic, reaching the 36-hole mark at 8-under 132. Each of Summerhays' three birdies fell from close range. He picked up a 15-inch birdie on the par-4 sixth and added another from 2'2" on the par-3 eighth. With those on the board, his 8'1" birdie on the par-4 14th felt like a bomb. If he can keep up his pace over the weekend, he could lock up his 2013-14 PGA TOUR card and a spot in the FedExCup playoffs at The Old White TPC.
Lunde spins second 66 at The Old White TPC 07-05-2013
Bill Lunde
Bill Lunde posted a 4-under-par 33-33=66 in the second round of The Greenbrier Classic and enters the weekend at 8-under 132. Lunde circled five birdies to just one bogey on his lap around The Old White TPC, with three of the birdies falling from outside 10 feet. While his putter didn't gain the 5.063 strokes it gained in the first round, it picked up well over a stroke. He also improved his GIR from 13 to 14 and fairways found from eight to 10 (of 14). His last top 10 on the PGA TOUR was a fifth at the Justin Timberlake in 2012.
