Jameel McClain is 'out indefinitely' 07-23-2013
Jameel McClain LB NYG
Ravens ILB Jameel McClain's (spinal cord contusion) health status remains "cloudy" and he is considered "out indefinitely."

Baltimore Sun
"Doctors had anticipated he would be out there at this time," coach John Harbaugh conceded. "It's a little slower than we had hoped." This is why the Ravens signed Daryl Smith. McClain now seems questionable for Week 1.
Terrell Suggs reports to camp in top shape 07-23-2013
Terrell Suggs OLB BAL
Ravens OLB Terrell Suggs reported to training camp "lighter, stronger, and faster," and reportedly appears "on a mission" this season.

Baltimore Sun
Suggs lost eight games last year to a partially torn Achilles', and wasn't quite the same upon return. "This season I have come back lighter because I just want to be the best player I can be," Suggs explained. "I know critics are supposed to have their opinions, but I'm getting pumped to prove them wrong." Look for Baltimore's defense to ascend back into the top ten or five this season.
Jets officially place Santonio Holmes on PUP 07-23-2013
Santonio Holmes WR CHI
Jets placed WR Santonio Holmes (foot) on the active/PUP list.

Ben Volin on Twitter
Holmes is coming off a Grade 4 Lisfranc injury and was a non-participant for the Jets' offseason workouts. He still can't do full weight-bearing activities and is questionable to be ready for the season opener.
Chiefs using Catapano at outside 'backer 07-23-2013
Mike Catapano OLB NYJ
The Chiefs are using seventh-round pick Mike Catapano at outside linebacker in training camp.

Kansas City Star
Catapano is a bit of a 'tweener at 6-foot-3, 271, but K.C.'s coaching staff believes he's athletic enough to convert from college defensive end. "He's got a little knack for pass rushing," said coach Andy Reid. Catapano is being crosstrained at outside 'backer on early downs and inside 'backer in the nickel.
Packers TE Quarless (knee) ready for camp 07-23-2013
Andrew Quarless TE DET
Packers TE Andrew Quarless (knee) is expected to be medically cleared for training camp.

Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
Quarless missed the entire 2012 season due to knee surgery, but participated in both OTAs and minicamp. "Looks good," coach Mike McCarthy said. "I really look for him to make an impact and definitely give us that player we felt he was at the end of his rookie year. He's the one guy that has shown the ability to play all four positions in the tight end playbook."
Giants to use LB Williams in three-down role? 07-23-2013
Jacquian Williams LB NYG
ESPN New York expects the Giants to use Jacquian Williams as a three-down linebacker.

ESPN New York
Williams is working his way back from offseason knee surgery and will compete with Spencer Paysinger for the starting weak-side linebacker job. With Keith Rivers and Mark Herzlich both suspect in pass coverage, Williams is a strong candidate for an every-down role if healthy.
Cowboys LE Spencer to have surgery Thursday 07-23-2013
Anthony Spencer LB NO
Cowboys LE Anthony Spencer will undergo left knee surgery Thursday.

Calvin Watkins on Twitter
Spencer is expected to miss 2-4 weeks and hopes to play in one preseason game. The Cowboys haven't expressed any concern that he won't be ready for Week 1. Second-year DE Kyle Wilber will get an extended look in his absence.
Wallace 'lacking chemistry' with Tannehill 07-23-2013
Mike Wallace WR BAL
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Mike Wallace "doesn't have great chemistry" with Ryan Tannehill and "had his share of drops" in training camp.

South Florida Sun-Sentinel
Wallace is still learning Mike Sherman's West Coast offense and "wasn't running at full speed" during the first three days of camp. One of the league's premier deep threats, he should become more involved as he gets adjusted to the Dolphins' scheme. Wallace signed a five-year, $30 million guaranteed contract this offseason.
Broncos MLB Irving to open camp as starter 07-23-2013
Nate Irving LB IND
Nate Irving will open training camp as the Broncos' starting middle linebacker.

Associated Press
The Broncos released Joe Mays on Tuesday, so Irving enters training camp as the clear-cut starter. A third-round pick in 2011, Irving has been slow to develop but is a candidate to take on an expanded role as a three-down linebacker with Von Miller facing a four-game suspension.
Browns not interested in FS Rhodes 'for now' 07-23-2013
Kerry Rhodes S ARZ
The Akron Beacon-Journal reports the Browns don't expect to sign free agent S Kerry Rhodes "for now."

Akron Beacon-Journal
Rhodes was released by the Cardinals this offseason and has yet to sign with a team, but the Browns are content to go into training camp with Johnson Bademosi and Tashaun Gipson at free safety. "Right now, we're committed to our roster," DC Ray Horton said. "We talk about injuries, attrition and we make sure we have a backup plan. He's one of the players that's on the street."
Barkley to be given opportunity to start 07-23-2013
Matt Barkley QB CHI
Eagles coach Chip Kelly confirmed that Matt Barkley will be given an opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback job.
"Everybody's got a chance," Kelly said. "Everybody that's in camp is going to get an opportunity. If someone continues to make plays and another guy continues not to make plays then he's going to move up. There's nothing set in stone."
Terrell Thomas to be limited throughout camp 07-23-2013
Terrell Thomas CB SEA
Giants DB Terrell Thomas will be limited in training camp as he works back from his third ACL tear.

Newark Star-Ledger
Thomas estimates he's "85-90 percent" healthy, and says he's willing to play any position in the defensive backfield. "I truly don't care if I play corner, nickel or safety," he said. "As long as I am on field; I feel I can be very productive." The Giants should consider anything Thomas adds a bonus in 2013.
Jones-Drew reports to Jaguars in good shape 07-23-2013
Maurice Jones-Drew RB OAK
Maurice Jones-Drew was noticeably in "considerably better shape" when he reported to Jaguars training camp Tuesday.
Listed at 5-foot-7, 208, Jones-Drew admits he ballooned to roughly 230 during the spring. His goal is to get down to 212-215 before Week 1. "I don't need to drop much, but just a little bit more just so I get comfortable and get ready to play," he said. Jones-Drew received full medical clearance upon arrival.
Jacoby Jones to pass conditioning test 'soon' 07-23-2013
Jacoby Jones WR PIT
Ravens coach John Harbaugh expects Jacoby Jones to begin practicing "soon."

Baltimore Sun
Jones failed his pre-training camp conditioning test Monday and was placed on the active/NFI list. "I would be very surprised if he isn't [reinstated]," Harbaugh said. "He's really close."
Ray Horton high on Craig Robertson 07-23-2013
Craig Robertson MLB NO
Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton called ILB Craig Robertson the "pleasant surprise" of Cleveland's offseason program.

Akron Beacon-Journal
Projected to start adjacent to D'Qwell Jackson, Robertson has some Wesley Woodyard to his game. "A young, athletic backer, who is savvy," Horton described. "When I came here, I wasn't sure how he would be on picking things up, but he's been everything I wanted. That's my little ace in the hole I hope."
Packers looking to get Cobb more involved 07-23-2013
Randall Cobb WR GB
Packers coach Mike McCarthy confirmed he expects Randall Cobb to take on a larger role in the offense.

Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel
Cobb has put together a strong offseason and is expected to see playing time both on the outside and in the slot in 2013. "He'll be given opportunities, there's no question about that," McCarthy said. "I think he definitely has a lot more growth in front of him. It's exciting."
Kendall Hunter still ahead of LaMichael James 07-23-2013
LaMichael James RB MIA
CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco would put "money" on Kendall Hunter receiving more 2013 carries than LaMichael James.

CSN Bay Area
This assumes Hunter's health cooperates after a 2012 Achilles' tear. James was largely unimpressive when we went back and reviewed his rookie-year tape this offseason, running hesitantly inside the tackles and looking far more like a change-up back and kickoff returner than future NFL lead running back.
Dion Jordan to resume full contact soon 07-23-2013
Dion Jordan DE MIA
Dolphins first-round DE/OLB Dion Jordan (shoulder) is expected to be cleared for full contact drills in the "next few days."
Jordan took part in non-contact reps and worked out on a limited basis Tuesday. Assuming he avoids setbacks, he should be practicing without limitations by the end of the week.
'Rumblings' 49ers want Rogers to take pay cut 07-23-2013
Carlos Rogers CB OAK
CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco passes along "rumblings" the 49ers want LCB Carlos Rogers to take a pay cut.

CSN Bay Area
Rogers, 32, is owed $5.5 million in base salary. Yahoo's Jason Cole reported late last week that the Niners would like to move on from Rogers, but the nixing of the Eric Wright trade may have saved his roster spot. Maiocco says Rogers definitely won't be back in 2014, when his pay jumps to $6.25 million.
49ers open to signing Eric Wright 07-23-2013
Eric Wright CB SF
49ers GM Trent Baalke isn't ruling out the possibility of signing free agent CB Eric Wright at a later date.

CSN Bay Area
The 49ers traded a late-round conditional pick for Wright before failing him on his physical, so there's at least some level of appreciation there. "With respect to Eric, there's always a possibility that he becomes a Niner at some point, it's just not now," Baalke said. "Our medical staff wasn't convinced he was ready to be put onto the field, so we didn't pass him."
Jerry Hughes to be Bills starting RE? 07-23-2013
Jerry Hughes OLB BUF
The Bills' website mentions April trade acquisition Jerry Hughes as a candidate to start at right defensive end following Mark Anderson's release.
Manny Lawson is also mentioned, although he's more of a strong-side linebacker. The "right end" position in new coordinator Mike Pettine's scheme is actually an end-'backer type role, and will line up opposite LE Mario Williams. The Bills will likely continue to struggle to generate consistent pass rush this year, which will necessitate blitzing. Pettine is a Rex Ryan disciple.
Saints place CB Patrick Robinson on PUP list 07-23-2013
Patrick Robinson CB IND
Saints placed CB Patrick Robinson (knee) on the active/PUP list.
Tony Moeaki cleared for Chiefs camp 07-23-2013
Tony Moeaki TE CHI
Chiefs TE Tony Moeaki (knee) has been medically cleared for training camp. After an early-offseason left knee scope, Moeaki missed all of OTAs and there was speculation he might not be ready for camp. Chiefs doctors obviously believe he's ready to practice. Moeaki's role and roster security are in question this year following the additions of Anthony Fasano and Travis Kelce.
Saints place Victor Butler on PUP list 07-23-2013
Victor Butler LB NYG
Saints placed OLB Victor Butler (ACL surgery) on the active/PUP list.

Ian Rapoport on Twitter
Whereas many active/PUPers come off the list to practice in camp, that won't be happening with Butler. He'll be transferred to the reserve/PUP list at final cuts. Butler tore the ACL at June minicamps. Reserve/PUP costs players a minimum of six games, but Butler is an extreme long shot to play in 2013.
Mackenzy Bernadeau placed on active/PUP 07-23-2013
Mackenzy Bernadeau OG JAX
Cowboys placed RG Mackenzy Bernadeau (shoulder, hamstring) on the active/PUP list.

ESPN Dallas
Bernadeau missed all offseason while recovering from shoulder surgery and failed his conditioning test after suffering a hamstring injury on the first day of camp. Coming off a shaky 2012, his starting job is open to competition. The Cowboys haven't ruled out moving first-round pick Travis Frederick to right guard.
Cowboys C Ryan Cook cleared to practice 07-23-2013
Ryan Cook T DAL
Cowboys C Ryan Cook has been cleared to practice.

Calvin Watkins on Twitter
Cook failed his pre-training camp conditioning test, but returned to practice on a limited basis Tuesday. The Cowboys have officially removed him from the NFI list.
Chiefs rookie CB Commings breaks collarbone 07-23-2013
Sanders Commings CB KC
Fifth-round CB Sanders Commings is out indefinitely after fracturing his left clavicle on the first day of Chiefs camp. It's not an injury from which Commings can't come back to be a 2013 contributor, but the Chiefs may ultimately wind up sending him to injured reserve. It'll depend on his recovery. Commings (6'0/216) is a big cornerback who could probably also play safety. He was the 134th overall pick in April's draft.
Donnie Avery cleared for Chiefs camp 07-23-2013
Donnie Avery WR KC
Chiefs WR Donnie Avery was medically cleared for the start of training camp. Signed to a three-year, $8.55 million deal in free agency, Avery missed all of OTAs with a high ankle sprain. He's fully healthy now, although Avery has a brittle injury history. He's tentatively expected to start opposite Dwayne Bowe.
Ravens WR Streeter showing signs of progress 07-23-2013
Tommy Streeter WR MIA
The Baltimore Sun reports that second-year WR Tommy Streeter has shown "definite signs of progress" this offseason.

Baltimore Sun
Streeter spent his entire rookie year on injured reserve with sprained ligaments├┐in his left foot and ankle, but managed to avoid surgery and has been medically cleared for the start of training camp. With Jacoby Jones currently on the active/NFI list, the 2012 sixth-round pick could be a darkhorse to emerge as a candidate for the Ravens' No. 2 receiver job.
Jason Babin medically cleared for camp 07-23-2013
Jason Babin OLB ARZ
Jaguars RE Jason Babin (groin surgery) was medically cleared for training camp. He passed his conditioning test and is all systems go. Babin will be the Jaguars' primary "Leo" defensive end, which is the go-to pass rusher in Gus Bradley's scheme. He's got legit IDP value as a sneaky DL2/3 with some upside.
Ahmad Bradshaw opens Colts camp on PUP 07-23-2013
Ahmad Bradshaw RB IND
Colts placed RB Ahmad Bradshaw (feet) on the active/PUP list. Bradshaw remained in a walking boot as of mid-June after a January procedure on his right foot. The Colts are probably just easing him into training camp, although with Bradshaw his injuries are always worth monitoring. Bradshaw can be activated from active/PUP at any time. Vick Ballard will run with the first team in the interim, though the job will be Bradshaw's once healthy.
Terrence Cody medically cleared for camp 07-23-2013
Terrence Cody DT BAL
Ravens NT Terrence Cody (hip surgery) was medically cleared for the start of training camp. Cody should feel urgency this year. He's entering a contract season, and the Ravens used a third-round draft pick on NT Brandon Williams. Cody is coming off a very poor year, where he got pushed around in the run game. Run stuffing is supposed to be Mount Cody's strength because he can't pressure the pocket.
Laurent Robinson leaves Patriots without deal 07-23-2013
Laurent Robinson WR N/A
Free agent Laurent Robinson left his tryout with the Patriots on Tuesday without a contract.

Ben Volin on Twitter
Per the Boston Globe's Ben Volin, the Patriots "will be back in touch" after his visit with the Lions Wednesday. Robinson also worked out for the Jets earlier this week but remains unsigned.
Bucs to look at Hillis as RB & FB 07-23-2013
Peyton Hillis RB NYG
The Bucs will look at Peyton Hillis as both a tailback and fullback.

Stephen Holder on Twitter
Hillis was a lead blocker in front of Darren McFadden and Felix Jones at Arkansas. He's played primarily tailback in the pros. Hillis will likely battle Brian Leonard for one roster spot. Doug Martin still doesn't have a clear handcuff as Hillis, Leonard, Michael Smith, and Mike James all vie for the role.
Desmond Trufant CB ATL
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Falcons are "optimistic" about reaching a deal with first-round CB Desmond Trufant prior to the start of training camp.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Saints sign DB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah 07-23-2013
Akwasi Owusu-Ansah WR DET
Saints signed DB Akwasi Owusu-Ansah. Owusu-Ansah has appeared in 14 career games, but he hasn't seen the field since the 2011 season with Jacksonville. He was last with the Raiders.
Raiders waive two players 07-23-2013
Coye Francies CB OAK
Raiders waived CB Coye Francies and LB Travis Goethel. Francies, 26, appeared in 15 games for the Raiders last season, registering just three tackles mainly as a special teamer. Goethel is best known for his horrendous long snap attempts in a Monday Night Football game last year.
Saints waive CB Ryan Steed 07-23-2013
Ryan Steed CB PIT
Saints waived CB Ryan Steed. Steed was a 2012 undrafted free agent out of Furman.
Cardinals waive RB William Powell 07-23-2013
William Powell RB HOU
Cardinals waived RB William Powell.

Adam Caplan on Twitter
Powell, 25, didn't stand a chance of making the 53-man roster after the Cardinals added Rashard Mendenhall, Andre Ellington, and Stepfan Taylor to the backfield mix. Powell appeared in 13 games last season, starting one, and ran for 217 yards on 60 carries behind the worst offensive line in the sport.
Report: Revis (knee) fully cleared by Bucs 07-23-2013
Darrelle Revis CB NYJ
NFL Network's Andrea Kremer reports the Buccaneers' team doctors have medically cleared Darrelle Revis (torn ACL).
Buccaneers veterans will report for training camp on Wednesday and take a conditioning test, but Revis will not be a part of the test because he hasn't trained for it. Revis is expected to participate in individual drills this week, but the team will likely ease him into seven-on-seven work just to be cautious.
Norv wants to get Richardson 300 carries 07-23-2013
Trent Richardson RB BAL
Browns OC Norv Turner wants Trent Richardson to carry the ball 300 times this season.

Cleveland Plain Dealer
"Obviously, the trend in the league is to not do that, but I think it depends on your team and everyone around it," Turner said. "If that player is your best player, then I think it's probably a good thing to have him in the game and give him the ball. So I would hope Trent would have that many carries." Only five running backs carried the ball at least 300 times last season; Richardson toted it 267 times. Stacked up at 5-foot-11 and 224 pounds, he can handle the load.
Report: Bucs & Peyton Hillis negotiating deal 07-23-2013
Peyton Hillis RB NYG
Jenna Laine of Sports Talk Florida and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport both report the Bucs are in contract negotiations with free agent Peyton Hillis.

Jenna Laine on Twitter
Hillis was in town, along with a host of other veteran free agents, on Tuesday to work out for the Bucs. Even if he does sign with Tampa Bay, Hillis will be far from a lock to make the 53-man roster. Hillis has battled a variety of injuries over the last two seasons, limiting him to just 246 carries. He's averaged 3.64 YPC over that span and looked genuinely washed up in K.C. last year.
Arthur Brown full-go at Ravens camp 07-23-2013
Arthur Brown LB NYJ
Ravens rookie ILB Arthur Brown is full-go at training camp after missing some offseason work following sports hernia surgery.

Aaron Wilson on Twitter
Brown did get in some individual drill work at OTAs. Described as a "sudden" athlete with "striking ability" by NFL Films' Greg Cosell, Brown will immediately add thump to the interior of Baltimore's defense, where he'll help replace Ray Lewis. Those are big shoes to fill, but Brown's on-field playing personality is highly composed and professional. We believe he's up to the task.
Patriots activate Ballard from active/PUP 07-23-2013
Jake Ballard TE ARZ
Patriots activated TE Jake Ballard (knees) from the active/PUP list.

Field Yates on Twitter
Ballard passed his physical and participated in Tuesday's practice. He spent all of a half-day on PUP. There haven't been many positive reports surrounding Ballard this summer, but the true test will come when the pads are on.
Falcons waive WR Tim Toone 07-23-2013
Tim Toone WR NO
Falcons waived WR Tim Toone. Toone, Mr. Irrelevant in the 2010 draft, has never appeared in a regular season game. He's bounced around between multiple teams' practice squads.
Browns sign WR Naaman Roosevelt 07-23-2013
Naaman Roosevelt WR BUF
Browns signed WR Naaman Roosevelt. Roosevelt, 25, was out of the league last season. Prior to that, he caught 25 passes for 396 yards and one touchdown in two seasons with the Bills. Roosevelt will try to earn a spot at the bottom of the roster.
Browns ink OG Greco to new 5-year contract 07-23-2013
John Greco C CLE
Browns signed OG John Greco to a new five-year contract. Acquired from the Rams for a seventh-round pick prior to the 2011 season, Greco has developed into a solid mauling run-blocking guard. He's now locked up through the 2017 season, and the new deal likely solidifies his spot as a starter at one of the guard spots. Jason Pinkston and Shawn Lauvao will compete on the other side. Greco had one year left on his deal at $800,000.
Bills place OT Chris Hairston on active/PUP 07-23-2013
Chris Hairston OT SD
Bills placed OT Chris Hairston (ankle/foot) on the active/PUP list. Hairston ended last season on injured reserve, and he isn't quite back to full health. Once he's medically cleared, Hairston will compete with incumbent RT Erik Pears for the starting job. We'd expect Hairston to win the gig.
Bills dump free-agent bust DE Mark Anderson 07-23-2013
Mark Anderson DE BUF
Bills released DE Mark Anderson. The move comes as a small surprise. Anderson signed a four-year, $19.5 million contract that included $8 million guaranteed last offseason. The Bills are eating an additional $500,000 by releasing him this year. After posting just one sack in five games last season, Anderson was expected to get another shot under the new regime. Instead, the Bills are wiping their hands clean. Jerry Hughes might be the new favorite to anchor one edge of the defense opposite Mario Williams. Anderson joins John Abraham on the free-agent end market.
Kelly: Vick, Foles to split reps at start 07-23-2013
Michael Vick QB PIT
Coach Chip Kelly says Michael Vick and Nick Foles will "probably" split first-team reps at the start of training camp.

Geoff Mosher on Twitter
Kelly didn't say much more on the competition, adding that he'd have a starter named by the time the team has to gameplan for its Week 1 matchup versus the Redskins. We consider Vick the favorite, but there have been numerous reports that Foles was more accurate in spring practices. Matt Barkley is still lurking in the weeds as a potential starter, but that's a hard one to see happening.
Larry Johnson sentenced to probation, fined 07-23-2013
Larry Johnson RB MIA
Ex-NFL RB Larry Johnson has been sentenced to one year probation and fined $345 as a result of a domestic violence case with an ex-girlfriend from October.
Johnson, 33, pleaded no contest, but he was found guilty of misdemeanor domestic violence battery and assault. A felony charge was dropped as part of a plea deal. Johnson must also complete 48 hours of community service and attend six months of counseling. He last played for the Dolphins in 2011.
Cowboys LE Spencer to undergo knee surgery 07-23-2013
Anthony Spencer LB NO
Cowboys LE Anthony Spencer will undergo knee surgery due to a bone bruise and is expected to miss 2-4 weeks.

Adam Schefter on Twitter
Spencer's knee has been bothersome since spring practices, and it flared up again in the pre-camp conditioning test. The 29-year-old admitted Monday night that surgery was a possibility, and both he and the team have decided to knock it out of the way so that he can be ready in time for the season opener. Second-year DE Kyle Wilber, the Cowboys' No. 3 end, will see significant reps.
Sheard's transition has been 'fantastic' 07-23-2013
Jabaal Sheard DE NE
Browns DC Ray Horton says Jabaal Sheard's transition to 3-4 stand-up edge rusher has been "fantastic."

Cleveland Plain Dealer
"He was one of the surprises of OTAs and minicamp for me," Horton said. "He transitioned from left to right and now we're playing him on both sides. ... He's really going to be a versatile player where I can use him to move him around and use his skill to the best of his ability." Although there were initial concerns about Sheard's ability to make the switch, he'd be a starter opposite Paul Kruger at outside 'backer if the season started today.
Seahawks sign TE Michael Palmer 07-23-2013
Michael Palmer TE PIT
Seahawks signed TE Michael Palmer. Palmer, 25, spent five days on the Giants' roster in May, but was later waived. He's appeared in 43 games for the Falcons over the last three seasons, mainly as a blocking tight end. Palmer will compete for a roster spot.
Free agent WR West taking physical for Rams 07-23-2013
Chastin West WR DET
Free agent WR Chastin West visited the Rams and took a physical on Tuesday.

Jim Thomas on Twitter
West (6-foot-1, 216) has bounced around a bit since entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Fresno State. He earned a Super Bowl ring as a member of the Packers' practice squad in 2010, then caught 13 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns with the Jaguars the following season.
Raiders get QB Tyler Wilson under contract 07-23-2013
Tyler Wilson QB CIN
Raiders signed fourth-round QB Tyler Wilson to a four-year contract. Wilson, the No. 112 overall pick, was taken 14 picks after Matt Barkley and two picks after Ryan Nassib. The rookie reportedly showed well in spring practices, and some local beat writers believe it wouldn't be a "stretch" to think Wilson could start games in year one. Wilson doesn't have the strongest arm or the pin-point accuracy, but he possesses the guts and toughness.
Jets sign K Billy Cundiff 07-23-2013
Billy Cundiff K BUF
Jets signed K Billy Cundiff. Cundiff worked out for Gang Green on Monday. The 33-year-old kicked in five games for the Redskins last season, converting just 7-of-12 field goals. He also spent two weeks on the 49ers' playoff roster but didn't dress. Cundiff will push Nick Folk for the job in New York. Kicker Brett Maher was waived to make room.
Bucs working out free agent DT Tommie Harris 07-23-2013
Tommie Harris DT SD
Free agent DT Tommie Harris worked out for the Bucs on Tuesday.
Harris, 30, was out of the league last year, and he hasn't garnered a Rotoworld blurb in over 14 months. The former No. 14 overall pick of the Bears last played for the Chargers in 2011, registering 13 tackles and three sacks.
Ingram, Thomas to split base workload evenly? 07-23-2013
Mark Ingram RB NO
The Times-Picayune expects Mark Ingram and Pierre Thomas to split the workload evenly in base packages.

New Orleans Times-Picayune
In theory, it's a chance for Ingram to shed bust whispers. He's finally sustained health for an entire offseason, Chris Ivory isn't lurking and he's comfortable as a three-year veteran. However, the Saints don't execute too many base runs, instead using Thomas and Darren Sproles as satellite backs. Last year, the three-headed monster of Ingram, Thomas and Ivory combined for just 301 carries. Expecting the Saints to suddenly use Ingram in his natural pounding role requires a leap of faith. Anything more than 160 carries for either Thomas or Ingram would be a surprise.
Henne, Gabbert to each get a preseason start? 07-23-2013
Chad Henne QB JAX
Coach Gus Bradley said there's a chance Chad Henne and Blaine Gabbert will each start a preseason game.

John Oesher on Twitter
We'd expect nothing less. Henne has a real shot to win a true quarterback competition as the new regime has no allegiances to the former first-round pick in Gabbert. Remember that Bradley comes from a Seahawks' organization that went with unheralded rookie Russell Wilson over free agent signing Matt Flynn last year.
Broncos dump MLB Joe Mays, save $3.5 million 07-23-2013
Joe Mays LB SD
Broncos released MLB Joe Mays. Mays lost his starting job to current free agent Keith Brooking last year and wasn't going to beat out Nate Irving this year. By cutting the former Eagle one year into his three-year, $12 million contract, the Broncos save $3.5 million against the cap right away. Perhaps they'll use that cash to help fill the void left by Von Miller's impending four-game suspension. As a two-down linebacker coming off a broken ankle and leg, Mays won't find a hot market for his services.
Maurice Jones-Drew medically cleared for camp 07-23-2013
Maurice Jones-Drew RB OAK
Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) has been medically cleared for training camp.

John Oesher on Twitter
It's a tremendous sign for Jones-Drew's 2013 outlook. He'll be eased into practices cautiously at first, but gaining full medical clearance roughly eight months after Lisfranc surgery is impressive progress. It suggests that Jones-Drew will be ready for a full workload by the time Week 1 rolls around. Entering a contract year in an offense that will try to hide its quarterback woes, the Jags would ideally like to ride their feature back into the ground. If MJD's foot holds up, we can't rule out a 325-touch season.
Justin Blackmon (groin) on PUP to start camp 07-23-2013
Justin Blackmon WR JAX
Jaguars placed WR Justin Blackmon (groin) on the active/PUP list. Blackmon underwent groin surgery sometime in late June or early July after being limited during minicamp. He might not be back in practice by next week, but it's not a major concern for the Jags. Blackmon won't be eligible to play until Week 5 anyway thanks to a four-game suspension. He'll be eased into contact work slowly.
Johnathan Cyprien starts camp on PUP 07-23-2013
Johnathan Cyprien SS JAX
Jaguars placed SS Johnathan Cyprien (hamstring) on the active/PUP list. Cyprien strained his hamstring while working out in Miami last week. The No. 33 overall pick in this year's draft is expected to begin his first training camp sometime next week. Cyprien remains penciled in as the Jags' starting strong safety after starring during OTAs and minicamp.
Travelle Wharton metting with Panthers 07-23-2013
Travelle Wharton T CAR
Free agent G Travelle Wharton is meeting with the Panthers Tuesday.

Charlotte Observer
Wharton spent his first eight seasons with the Panthers, starting 99 games at guard and tackle. He left for Cincy last year, but hurt his knee during the preseason opener and missed the entire season. Wharton, now 32, would provide some much-needed depth across the Panthers' line.
Browns set to give Cameron his big chance 07-23-2013
Jordan Cameron TE MIA
OC Norv Turner reiterated that Jordan Cameron is getting his opportunity to be "the guy" at tight end.

Will Burge on Twitter
The Browns have shown nothing but faith in the highly athletic Cameron for months now. They let Ben Watson walk in free agency, replacing him with backup-types in Kellen Davis and Gary Barnidge. They didn't use a single draft pick on a tight end. Cameron enters camp as the unquestioned starter and featured player in one of the game's most tight end friendly schemes. He remains one of our favorite sleepers.
Aaron Dobson will get his chances at X 07-23-2013
Aaron Dobson WR ARZ
ESPN Boston expects second-round WR Aaron Dobson to be given "every chance to seize" the starting X receiver job.

Patrick Scales signs on with Jets 07-23-2013
Patrick Scales LS CHI
Jets signed LS Patrick Scales and T Jeffrey Shugarts. Scales has never appeared in an NFL game despite cups of coffee with the Ravens and Dolphins. Shugarts replaces Mark Popek as a camp body at tackle.
Thomas Mayo, Popek released by Jets 07-23-2013
Thomas Mayo WR NYJ
Jets released WR Thomas Mayo and T Mark Popek.
Shaun Phillips is Miller's direct backup 07-23-2013
Shaun Phillips LB IND
Shaun Phillips is Von Miller's direct backup at strong-side linebacker.

Denver Post
Miller is currently appealing a four-game ban for amphetamines and marijuana. Assuming the appeal is denied, the Broncos are going to have to get creative with Phillips. On the decline at age 32, he has no shot of coming close to replicating Miller's dominance. Still, the extra opportunities will make Phillips an interesting IDP flier in September.
Marcus Lattimore says he can practice 07-23-2013
Marcus Lattimore RB SF
Marcus Lattimore (knee surgeries) believes he's physically capable of practicing right now.

Yahoo Sports
When Lattimore shredded his ACL, PCL and MCL nine months ago, some doctors said he wouldn't walk for a year. Now he's running steps and sprinting up hills. Lattimore will almost certainly start his rookie season on the reserve/PUP list and use 2013 as a redshirt season, but he's far ahead of schedule. Dynasty leaguers should take note.
Michael Egnew playing for a roster spot 07-23-2013
Michael Egnew TE NO
Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald does not expect TE Michael Egnew to make the Dolphins' final roster.

Armando Salguero on Twitter
The much maligned Egnew is already off to a rough start at training camp. He opened up with the third- and fourth-stringers and fumbled on Tuesday. The Dolphins may end up just cutting their losses on the 2012 third-rounder; they're already giving rookie Dion Sims a few reps with the starters.
Bears see Kyle Long as a guard 07-23-2013
Kyle Long OG CHI
The Bears believe Kyle Long has more potential at guard rather than tackle.

Chicago Tribune
Jason Kelce medically cleared for camp 07-23-2013
Jason Kelce C PHI
Eagles C Jason Kelce (knee) has been medically cleared for full participation at training camp.

Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News
Kelce tore his ACL during Week 2 last season, one of the first dominoes to fall in the Eagles' season to forget. He may be eased in and will wear braces on both of his knees, but his health does not appear to be an issue right now. Kelce is part of an offensive line that has a chance to make a major leap forward this season.
Brent Celek considered a blocking tight end 07-23-2013
Brent Celek TE PHI
The Philadelphia Inquirer says Brent Celek is now considered a blocking tight end.

Pettigrew expected to see another 100 targets 07-23-2013
Brandon Pettigrew TE DET
The Detroit Free Press expects Brandon Pettigrew to see another 100-plus targets this season.

Detroit Free Press
Pettigrew has been a volume pass-catcher over the last three seasons, averaging 71 catches on 113 targets during that span. The problem is his aDot (average depth of target) last season was fourth-lowest among tight ends, he's drop prone and he's not a primary red-zone target for Matthew Stafford. Although Pettigrew will be highly motivated in a contract year, he's not a TE1 candidate.
Robert Turbin to be third-down back 07-23-2013
Robert Turbin RB IND
Robert Turbin is expected to be the Seahawks' third-down back this season.

Tacoma News Tribune
With Leon Washington gone and Marshawn Lynch a two-down back, the job is Turbin's to lose. However, it's not a high-upside gig. Washington managed just 27 touches from scrimmage last year despite playing in all 16 games. Lynch owners looking for insurance would be better off with Christine Michael, a more talented inside runner than Turbin.
Dion Jordan practicing with Dolphins 07-23-2013
Dion Jordan DE MIA
Dolphins first-round DE/OLB Dion Jordan (shoulder) is practicing Tuesday.

Barry Jackson on Twitter
Jordan underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum prior to the draft. It's a great sign for the Dolphins that he's already in full pads and taking his reps during the first week of training camp. Jordan isn't expected to be a starter come Week 1, but he'll get plenty of snaps as a versatile pass-rushing weapon.
Donald Jones to work out for Titans, Colts 07-23-2013
Donald Jones WR NE
Free agent WR Donald Jones will work out for the Titans Tuesday and the Colts Wednesday.

Mike Garafolo on Twitter
The Titans are overloaded at wideout with Kenny Britt, Kendall Wright, Nate Washington, Justin Hunter and Kevin Walter. They're just updating their emergency list. The Colts could be looking for someone to act as a No. 4 wideout while LaVon Brazill serves his four-game suspension.
Visanthe Shiancoe to work out for Bucs 07-23-2013
Visanthe Shiancoe TE TEN
Free agent TE Visanthe Shiancoe is working out for the Bucs Tuesday.

Jason La Canfora on Twitter
The Bucs certainly need help at tight end, where their depth chart currently lists Luke Stocker as the starter and Tom Crabtree as the backup. We're just skeptical Shiancoe would contribute much at this point. He's 33 years old and played just 59 snaps last season.
Jake Ballard may not make Patriots final 53 07-23-2013
Jake Ballard TE ARZ
Ben Volin of the Boston Globe considers TE Jake Ballard "not a lock" for the Patriots' final roster.

Ben Volin on Twitter
We didn't think he was, but there's a perception that Ballard will have a big role in New England's offense. It's unlikely. Volin observed "stiff" movement from Ballard in OTAs, which is in addition to fellow Pats beat writers describing him as "rigid" and "slogging." The Late Round QB's JJ Zachariason has compared Ballard's running ability to a cross between Cam Cleeland and a dad.
Steelers don't know when Miller will be ready 07-23-2013
Heath Miller TE PIT
According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, "no one within the organization knows" when Heath Miller (knee) will be ready to play this season.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Miller tore his ACL, MCL and PCL roughly seven months ago. He'll open camp on the active/PUP list and is a serious candidate to start the season on the reserve/PUP list. Although recovery timetables for knee reconstructions are getting shorter, Miller already lacked elite athleticism and will turn 31 years old in October. It's not fair to compare his recovery to that of Adrian Peterson or Robert Griffin III. David Paulson is the leading candidate to start Week 1 right now.
Le'Veon Bell expected to play on third downs 07-23-2013
Le'Veon Bell RB PIT
The Steelers expect second-round RB Le'Veon Bell to be capable of playing on third downs right away.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
One of the reasons the Steelers were so high on Bell in April was his ability to both pass protect and catch the ball out of the backfield at 6'1/230. When Steelers camp opens on Friday, he'll be trying to prove that those skills he showed at Michigan State translate to the NFL. The Steelers want Bell to run away with the every-down job, leaving Isaac Redman as a backup and putting Jonathan Dwyer's roster spot in jeopardy. It would be a surprise if he doesn't do just that.
RG3 not expected to play in preseason games 07-23-2013
Robert Griffin QB CLE
Sources tell ESPN that it would be a "major surprise" if Robert Griffin III (knee) plays in any preseason games.
Texans don't want another 350 totes for Arian 07-23-2013
Arian Foster RB MIA
The Texans' coaches don't want Arian Foster setting another career high in carries.

Houston Chronicle
Last year, Foster's efficiency waned (career low 4.05 YPC) as he toted the rock a league-leading 351 times. Part of that ridiculously heavy workload had to do with Ben Tate's inability to stay on the field. Now Tate is coming off a strong offseason, is fully healthy and is entering a contract year. With a strong camp, he'll get 7-9 carries per game. That still leaves plenty of work for Foster in the Texans' run-based offense, but we're expecting something closer to 300 carries.
Terrance Williams struggles early in camp 07-23-2013
Terrance Williams WR DAL
Terrance Williams has reportedly struggled through the first two practices of training camp.

Dallas Morning News
Williams is off on the wrong foot as he tries to beat out Dwayne Harris for the No. 3 wideout job. After dropping a pass in the open field Monday, Jason Witten yelled, "Damn it, 83! Come on!" During minicamps, receivers coach Derek Dooley said Williams has "still got a long way to go."
Haloti Ngata 'blows away' conditioning test 07-23-2013
Haloti Ngata DT DET
Ravens NT Haloti Ngata was cleared medically for the start of training camp.

Baltimore Sun
Ngata is fully recovered from his Super Bowl knee injury, and back in shape after reporting to OTAs a bit heavier than the Ravens wanted. "Yeah, Haloti came in in great shape," coach John Harbaugh confirmed. "He's looking great. He blew away the conditioning test. He's ready to go." Still only 29 years old, Ngata is poised to play primarily nose tackle for the first time in his career.
Patriots place WR Edelman on PUP list 07-23-2013
Julian Edelman WR NE
Patriots placed WR Julian Edelman (foot) on the active/PUP list. Edelman suffered a setback with his broken right foot in May, but shed his walking boot in June and shouldn't be too far off a return to practice. He missed OTAs and minicamp. Players placed on active/PUP to open training camp can be activated at any time in August. Edelman is a quality deep fantasy sleeper.
Patriots place Jake Ballard on active/PUP 07-23-2013
Jake Ballard TE ARZ
Patriots placed TE Jake Ballard (knee) on the active/PUP list. Reports on Ballard's spring practice work were thoroughly negative, with one describing his movement as "slogging" and another as "rigid." He's still working his way back from reconstructive and microfracture knee surgeries. An oddly popular fantasy sleeper, Ballard is likely to disappoint anyone drafting him.
Patriots place Gronkowski on PUP list 07-23-2013
Rob Gronkowski TE NE
Patriots placed TE Rob Gronkowski (back, forearm surgeries) on the active/PUP list. This move was fully expected. While the active/PUP list does make Gronk a candidate for the regular season PUP list theoretically, there have been no indications the Patriots expect him to miss the first six games. We hope to have a better idea of Gronkowski's return timetable later in training camp.
