Visanthe Shiancoe out with injury 08-21-2012
Visanthe Shiancoe TE NE
Patriots TE Visanthe Shiancoe has missed the "last several weeks" with an undisclosed injury.

ESPN Boston
He's looking doubtful for Friday's preseason game. With Daniel Fells (leg) rounding back to health, Shiancoe's roster spot is likely in grave danger, though the Pats gave him $400,000 guaranteed. If Shiancoe manages to crack to the Patriots' 53-man roster, he'll be completely off the fantasy radar behind Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.
Roy Helu (Achilles' tendons) making progress 08-21-2012
Roy Helu RB WAS
Roy Helu (Achilles' tendons) is "uncertain" for Saturday's game against the Colts, but is optimistic about his progress.

Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star
"I've had tight Achilles for some time, and then eventually, just going into camp and running every day, my left one just ended up hurting and then my right one is just more tight than anything," Helu said. "The left one's getting better. Everything's becoming more - not as tight. ... It's got more bounce in it." Helu won't play Saturday, but could see some time in Washington's preseason finale. At this point, he's looking destined for a small early-season role.
Andre Carter to visit Rams 08-21-2012
Andre Carter LB OAK
Free agent DE Andre Carter has scheduled a visit with the Rams.

Josina Anderson on Twitter
Phil Costa costa unlikely to play Saturday 08-21-2012
Phil Costa G DAL
Cowboys C Phil Costa is unlikely to play in Saturday's game against the Rams.

Dallas Morning News
Costa has been "day-to-day" for nearly two weeks, but did suit up against the Chargers last weekend. It will be a major issue for the Cowboys if Costa isn't ready for Week 1, as backup David Arkin has struggled mightily with his snaps.
Martellus Bennett sheds over 20 pounds 08-21-2012
Martellus Bennett TE CHI
Giants TE Martellus Bennett is back down to 269 pounds after ballooning to 291 in the offseason.

ESPN New York
That's near the weight Bennett played at in Dallas. Although Bennett compared himself to Greek god Atlas in his bulked-up state, it was clearly a situation that didn't fly with the coaching staff. Set to open the year as a starter, Bennett has TE2 upside in a Giants offense that likes to target its tight ends. He has four catches for 34 yards through two preseason games.
Evan Moore's roster spot in danger 08-21-2012
Evan Moore TE PHI
The Cleveland Plain Dealer believes Browns TE Evan Moore's roster spot is in danger.

Cleveland Plain Dealer
Moore is behind all three of Ben Watson, Jordan Cameron and Alex Smith, and is hurt by his non-guaranteed $1.87 million salary. The fifth-year pro missed time early in camp with a hamstring injury, but has appeared in both preseason games, making three catches for 38 yards. He'd do well to stand out against the Eagles on Friday. A highly-talented pass catcher, Moore would likely be able to latch on elsewhere if handed his walking paper.
Colts acquire CB Gordy from St. Louis 08-21-2012
Josh Gordy CB IND
Colts acquired CB Josh Gordy from the Rams for an undisclosed draft pick.

Jim Thomas on Twitter
Bears P Podlesh injures hip 08-21-2012
Adam Podlesh P CHI
The Bears are "very concerned" about the left hip injury P Adam Podlesh suffered in Saturday's preseason game.

ESPN Chicago
The injury is to Podlesh's plant leg, but has him iffy for Week 1. Podlesh's net punting average of 40.4 yards was sixth in the NFL in 2011. The Bears will go with undrafted free agent Ryan Quigley or a veteran free agent if Podlesh isn't ready for the regular season.
Chargers C Hardwick suffers concussion 08-21-2012
Nick Hardwick C SD
Chargers C Nick Hardwick suffered a concussion in Tuesday's practice.

Scott Bair on Twitter
The severity is unknown, but it's Hardwick's third-known concussion since entering the league in 2004. It's his first since 2008, however. Pro Football Focus' 12th ranked center last season, Hardwick hasn't missed a game since 2009. He should be ready for Week 1.
Robert Blanton (hamstring) still sidelined 08-21-2012
Robert Blanton CB MIN
Vikings S Robert Blanton (hamstring) has been sidelined since early in camp, and is uncertain for Friday's game against the Chargers.

ESPN 1500 Twin Cities
"We are hoping that he can play in this ballgame on Friday night so we can get some tape on him and evaluate him in game situations," coach Leslie Frazier said. A physical run stopper, Blanton was in the mix for snaps heading into camp, but his roster spot will be up in the air if he misses his third straight game Friday.
Letroy Guion (PCL) suffers setback 08-21-2012
Letroy Guion DT MIN
Vikings NT Letroy Guion has suffered a setback in his recovery from a sprained right PCL.

ESPN 1500 Twin Cities
He won't suit up for Friday's tilt with the Chargers. It will be Guion's second straight exhibition absence after he hurt his knee in the opener, and has his status for Week 1 murky. Veteran Fred Evans is starting in his absence.
Bills C Eric Wood (ACL) ready to roll 08-21-2012
Eric Wood C BUF
Bills C Eric Wood (ACL surgery) will play in his second straight preseason game against the Steelers Saturday.

BuffaloBills.com
Wood wasn't originally expected to suit up for Buffalo's second exhibition tilt, so he's well ahead of schedule. He'll be ready to roll for Week 1.
Doug Baldwin undergoes hamstring procedure 08-21-2012
Doug Baldwin WR SEA
Seahawks WR Doug Baldwin is recovering from a "little" hamstring procedure, and will be inactive for Friday's game against the Chiefs.

Seattle Times
"He had a little procedure done to clear up his hamstring that was very successful," coach Pete Carroll said Tuesday. "He'll be back in it next week for sure. Whether we play him next week or not - I don't know that yet - but he should be practicing full go and we'll return next week." Carroll's glasses are famously rose-colored, so take his recovery timetable with a grain of salt. However, Baldwin - who's taken zero preseason reps - appears to be on track for Week 1. He should remain locked in as the Seahawks' slot receiver.
Chaz Schilens has high-ankle sprain 08-21-2012
Chaz Schilens WR NYJ
Jets WR Chaz Schilens is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, and is expected to be inactive for Sunday's game against the Panthers.

Manish Mehta on Twitter
It's unclear when Schilens suffered the injury, but it was likely New York's first exhibition game, where he was held without a catch. The Jets have precious little veteran receiver depth, but missing Sunday's dress rehearsal should just about ice the injury-prone Schilens' chances of cracking the 53-man roster. Schilens appeared in 15 games for the Raiders last season after missing a combined 19 contests between 2009-10, but was limited by foot and knee injuries.
Sidney Rice practices without limitations 08-21-2012
Sidney Rice WR SEA
Sidney Rice (shoulder surgeries) practiced without limitations for the first time in camp on Tuesday.

Seattle Times
"It was the first time he has had a full-blown day where we've cut him loose and let him do everything," coach Pete Carroll said. "He got banged around. ... Which was great. He made some good catches today. He looked very fast out there, and it's exciting to see. This was the first day that I really feel like, 'OK, he's in it now.'" Better late than never, but Rice is still uncertain for Friday's game against the Chiefs. "We'll see," Carroll allowed. One of the biggest injury risks in the league, Rice is Rotoworld's No. 39 receiver.
Rex: We're not looking for right tackle 08-21-2012
Wayne Hunter T STL
Coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday the Jets are not in the market for a new right tackle.

Newark Star-Ledger
"...To say that we're in the market for a starting tackle, I don't believe that to be an accurate statement," Ryan said. However, he did hint the Jets would be open to overtures from other clubs. We would say it's impossible to find a starting-caliber lineman at this point in the season, but that might not be the case if the man he's replacing is revolving door Wayne Hunter. Whether in an official capacity or not, the Jets will remain on the lookout for tackle help.
Rams WR Gibson returns, then 'pulled back' 08-21-2012
Brandon Gibson WR MIA
Rams WR Brandon Gibson (hamstring) returned to practice on Monday, but was "pulled back" in Tuesday's session.

Jim Thomas on Twitter
It's unclear if Gibson suffered a setback or it was a planned easing off, but either way, he remains questionable for Saturday's Week 1 tune up against the Cowboys. Gibson will dent his chances of cracking the Rams' muddled receiver corps if he doesn't suit up in Big D.
Report: No chance Jaguars trade Jones-Drew 08-21-2012
Maurice Jones-Drew RB JAC
CBS Sports' Mike Freeman reports there's no chance the Jaguars will trade holdout Maurice Jones-Drew.

Mike Freeman on Twitter
Freeman's source actually said that, "for the moment, no (expletive deleted) way the Jaguars trading MJD." Although Jones-Drew wants more money -- either from Jacksonville or another team -- the Jaguars have little incentive to trade their best offensive player. The saber-rattling from Jones-Drew's agent doesn't change the fact that he has no leverage.
Bears FS Conte has dislocated shoulder 08-21-2012
Chris Conte S CHI
Bears FS Chris Conte's shoulder injury has been diagnosed as a dislocation.

Vaughn McClure on Twitter
Although no surgery has been planned, Conte's status for the season opener is now up in the air. The Bears will likely turn to veteran Craig Steltz if Conte misses time.
Agent: Obviously, Jones-Drew is not happy 08-21-2012
Maurice Jones-Drew RB JAC
The player rep for Maurice Jones-Drew confirms that owner Shad Khan's recent comments have embittered the star running back.

Associated Press
"Obviously, he's not happy that what started as a very cordial and private conversation is now public and contentious," said agent Adisa Bakari. "Maurice wants to play for an organization that wants him and for an owner who respects him and values what he brings to a team -- on the field, in the locker room and in the community." We doubt the Jaguars will seriously entertain Jones-Drew's invitation for a trade. With two proud men entrenched, this holdout could spill over to the regular season.
LaMichael James returns to practice 08-21-2012
LaMichael James RB SF
49ers rookie RB LaMichael James (ankle) returned to practice Tuesday.

CSN Bay Area
X-rays came back negative on James' left ankle sprain. The second-round change-of-pace back should be fine going forward.
Britt hoping to be ready for season opener 08-21-2012
Kenny Britt WR TEN
Kenny Britt (knee surgeries) is "hoping" to be game ready by the season opener.

TitanInsider on Twitter
Britt has had normal soreness but no swelling in his surgically repaired right knee. If he hadn't undergone a scope on his left knee in mid-July, Britt believes he would already be practicing. Still expected to be suspended 1-2 games for a DUI arrest, Britt has yet to hear from the commissioner's office since his visit two weeks ago.
Report: Jones-Drew now 'open' to being traded 08-21-2012
Maurice Jones-Drew RB JAC
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Maurice Jones-Drew is now "open to being traded" in light of owner Shad Khan's recent suggestion that the "train is leaving the station."

Adam Schefter on Twitter
"Run, get on it," Khan added as advice for Jones-Drew. If the star tailback was thinking about returning soon, as teammates reportedly believed, Khan's comments had the opposite effect. Jones-Drew is once again entrenched. Per Schefter, the holdout "shows no signs of letting up and is fully expected to extend into the regular season." If the front office accepts Jones-Drew's trade invitation, former Jags coordinator Dirk Koetter's team in Atlanta is one to watch. GM Thomas Dimitroff isn't afraid to make bold moves, and a declining Michael Turner is a poor fit for Koetter's fast-paced offense.
Giants have 'ray of hope' for DT Rogers 08-21-2012
Shaun Rogers DT NYG
The Giants are now holding out a "ray of hope" that the blood clot in DT Shaun Rogers' left calf is not season-ending in nature.

New York Daily News
A change in medication has helped Rogers deal with the blood clot better than originally expected. "We're just going to hang on as well as we can, said Coughlin. "There is a chance he can come back and play."
Lofton insists he could play this week 08-21-2012
Curtis Lofton LB NO
Saints LB Curtis Lofton (high ankle sprain) insists he could play this week if it was a regular season game.

WWLTV New Orleans
"I'm feeling good," Lofton said. "Just doing what I'm told. Just taking care of it. It's still preseason so it's still early. But once Week 1 rolls around, I'll be ready to go." Lofton said he played through a similar injury in the final three games of last season.
Returner Holliday expected to make team 08-21-2012
Trindon Holliday WR DEN
The Houston Chronicle believes KR/PR Trindon Holliday has "made the team" with a strong performance this month.

Houston Chronicle
Coach Gary Kubiak suggested Holliday would finally stick if he proves to be a "special" returner. The 2010 sixth-rounder has responded with 90- and 87-yard returns in preseason action. Holliday finally showed improvement as a receiver in offseason practices, giving Kubiak another excuse to keep him on as the sixth wideout.
No cartilage damage; Vick will play Week 1 08-21-2012
Michael Vick QB PHI
Diagnostic testing showed no cartilage damage on Michael Vick's ribs.

Profootballtalk on NBCSports.com
The MRI and CT scans revealed nothing more than a contusion to the soft tissue in Vick's rib area. The Eagles will proceed with caution this week, but Vick is fully expected to start the season opener versus the Browns. We're happy to scoop Vick up in the late fourth or fifth round if the preseason aches and pains lead to a knee-jerk ADP drop.

WRs coach: Julio can catch 80 'sleepwalking' 08-21-2012
Julio Jones WR ATL
Falcons WRs coach Terry Robiskie believes Julio Jones can catch 80 passes this season "sleepwalking."

Yahoo! Sports
"We'll have some new wrinkles, a couple of things designed to get it in Julio's hands faster, so he can get it and go," explained Robiskie. "Julio is a massive man. When he runs, it's like being at a morning workout with horses in Kentucky - you can literally close your eyes and hear him running with power." Robiskie's comments are further confirmation that Jones is emerging as the offensive focal point in his second season. Observing Falcons practice Tuesday, Fox Sports' Jay Glazer tweeted, "Seeing Julio out here it's almost as if he's on a completely different plane than the defense. Kid is a stud!!!!"
Thompson wants to see Harrell improve 08-21-2012
Graham Harrell QB GB
Packers GM Ted Thompson wants to see "continued improvement" and a "bounce back" game from backup QB Graham Harrell this week.

Fox Sports Wisconsin
Although coach Mike McCarthy placed much of the blame for Harrell's poor performance to date on the second-team offensive line, Thompson concedes that he does "fish from time to time" on exploratory trade calls. Even if Harrell graded out better than we might expect -- as McCarthy stated Tuesday -- it's hard to imagine a Super Bowl contender going forward with him as the No. 2 QB.
Patriots release DE Fanene, lose $3.85M 08-21-2012
Jonathan Fanene DE NE
Patriots released DE Jonathan Fanene, OL Kyle Hill and K Chris Koepplin. Fanene's release is a major surprise after the Patriots handed him a $3.85 million signing bonus in March. Although Fanene spent the offseason working as the starting left end, he had been battling injuries throughout training camp, leaving more snaps for Ron Brace and Brandon Deaderick. ESPN's John Clayton reports Fanene might need to undergo a knee scope later in the week. The 30-year-old will be free to sign with another team once he proves healthy.
Bears waive/injured DT Pressley 08-21-2012
DeMario Pressley DT CHI
Bears waived/injured DT DeMario Pressley.

Brad Biggs on Twitter
Sidelined by a foot/ankle injury, Pressley was battling Nate Collins, John McCargo, and Jordan Miller for one roster spot following the Brian Price trade.
Rookie Upshaw losing ground to McClellan 08-21-2012
Courtney Upshaw LB BAL
Coach John Harbaugh confirmed that second-round DE/OLB Courtney Upshaw has lost ground to Albert McClellan since opening training camp with the first-team defense.

Baltimore Sun
Upshaw arrived to camp over his 270-pound playing weight and missed a week of practices with a sprained right shoulder while McClellan has played at a high level. "You've got to earn your stripes. You've got to earn your position, no matter what," Harbaugh explained. "I don't know why a lot of people would think that [Upshaw would be handed a starting job]. It's pretty presumptuous. The best guys play."
Rookie WR Jeffery earning more snaps? 08-21-2012
Alshon Jeffery WR CHI
The Chicago Tribune's Dan Pompei expects rookie WR Alshon Jeffery to receive "a lot of playing time in the near future" if he keeps performing the way he has in the first two preseason games.

Dan Pompei on Twitter
Even as the fourth receiver, Jeffery saw action on the opening drive of last week's game. The Bears may continue to "start" Hester as a nod to his experience (or to his inflated salary), but Jeffery could still end up with more snaps than any receiver on the team save Brandon Marshall. Among the most impressive offensive rookies, Jeffery's arrow is pointed up.
Whiz: 'No concern at all' with Beanie's knee 08-21-2012
Beanie Wells RB ARZ
Coach Ken Whisenhunt confirmed that Beanie Wells (knee) will make his 2012 preseason debut on Thursday versus the Titans.

AzCardinals.com
Beanie's return will be treated in the same fashion as Ryan Williams' last week, with handful of touches on the docket. "I'm excited to see him in a game," Whisenhunt said. "There's no concern with him at all with his health." We will keep a close eye on Beanie to see if he's flashing pre-surgery form this week. If so, he will be locked in as the Week 1 starter over Williams.
Dez returning for opener 'without a doubt' 08-21-2012
Dez Bryant WR DAL
Dez Bryant (knee tendinitis) fully expects to be on the field for the NFL opener versus the Giants.

Clarence Hill on Twitter
"You know I'm going to play in New York," said Bryant. "That's without a doubt." Bryant and the Cowboys are downplaying this week's knee soreness, suggesting the injury is no more worrisome than a "day-to-day" designation. While the tendinitis does serve as a reminder that Bryant's physical playing style often leads to trips to the trainers table, it's not serious enough to change his fantasy outlook.
Former Top-5 Fantasy RB Portis set to retire 08-21-2012
Clinton Portis RB WAS
Ex-Redskins RB Clinton Portis will announce his retirement at a press conference on Thursday. Portis was reportedly intent on returning to play this season after going unsigned in 2011, but he never received serious interest. Turning 32 in two weeks, Portis' explosion had evaporated by the 2009 season due to heavy workloads and an assortment of leg injuries. A colorful two-time Pro Bowler who often dressed in costume and created characters such as Southeast Jerome and Coach Janky Spanky, Portis finishes his career 27th on the all-time rushing list with 9,923 yards. In addition to earning 2002 offensive rookie of the year honors, Portis also boasts five top-10 fantasy seasons.

Broncos activate Leonhard from PUP list 08-21-2012
Jim Leonhard S NO
Broncos activated S Jim Leonhard (knee) from the active/PUP list.

Denver Post
Leonhard resumed practicing Tuesday, eight months removed from surgery to repair a torn patellar tendon. If he shows enough over the next two weeks to keep a roster spot, Leonhard will provide veteran insurance for young safeties Quinton Carter and Rahim Moore.
Redskins FB Young resumes practicing 08-21-2012
Darrel Young RB WAS
Redskins FB Darrel Young (hamstring) resumed practicing on Tuesday.

CSN Washington
The lead-blocking in coach Mike Shanahan's zone-blocking scheme is expected to make his preseason debut on Saturday. His return will lead to fewer snaps for Chris Cooley, who had been moonlighting at fullback of late.
Broncos waive CB Josh Moore 08-21-2012
Joshua Moore CB DEN
Broncos waived CB Josh Moore.

Lindsay Jones on Twitter
A fifth-round pick by the Bears in 2010, Moore has recorded one tackle in three regular-season games.
David Wilson expects first-team reps Friday 08-21-2012
David Wilson RB NYG
Rookie RB David Wilson has been led to believe this week's first-team reps will carry through to Friday's game versus the Bears.

Mike Garafolo on Twitter
"They're giving me my opportunity this week," explained Wilson. Although there's been plenty of speculation that D.J. Ware will enter the season as Ahmad Bradshaw's primary backup, this is evidence that Wilson will be given a shot to overtake Ware. We still expect Wilson to eat into Bradshaw's workload over the course of the season.
Report: Jets DT Ellis won't be suspended 08-21-2012
Kenrick Ellis DT NYJ
Jets DT Kenrick Ellis will reportedly escape NFL suspension for a misdemeanor assault and battery conviction.

Manish Mehta on Twitter
Ellis was given a 45-day sentence for the incident, dating back to Hampton University in 2010. Having already served half of the sentence, Ellis will wait until next offseason to serve the other half. Ellis' NFL career has not been affected by the conviction.
Rivera: TE Olsen ready to join league's elite 08-21-2012
Greg Olsen TE CAR
Coach Ron Rivera believes "it's possible" that TE Greg Olsen could put up numbers similar to Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham.

Associated Press
"This will be his first real opportunity with us to step up and be the starting tight end and be the guy," said Rivera. "You watch him catch footballs and you watch him run routes and you see those traits that say you can fit right into that group. We're excited about it." Olsen combined with Jeremy Shockey for 82 catches and 995 yards last season. Shockey is no longer on the roster. Olsen's fantasy stock has been on the rise in the Rotoworld Draft guide.
Shurmur: Cameron has made biggest jump 08-21-2012
Jordan Cameron TE CLE
Coach Pat Shurmur believes TE Jordan Cameron has made the biggest jump of any Browns players this year.

Elyria Chronicle-Telegram
The former college basketball player always has the size and athleticism. He's now showing improved technique, specifically in footwork and hand placement as a blocker. "\"You have to be able to do more than one thing for us to throw you the football," Shurmur said. "I think that's one of the things he's focused on quite a bit and he's getting better." We love Cameron as a speculative buy or waiver addition in Dynasty leagues.
Steelers LB Harrison expects to play opener 08-21-2012
James Harrison LB CIN
Steelers OLB James Harrison (knee scope) believes he will play in Week 1 even though he's yet to practice in pads since the 2011 season.

Pittsburgh Tribune-Review
Harrison will begin testing his knee each day. "I might need a little prep, we got a couple of new things (on defense), but other than that I think I'll be all right," Harrison said. "You've got to get back in timing with the other guys and everything else, and a few days of practice would help."
Holdout Jones-Drew ready to show up 'soon'? 08-21-2012
Maurice Jones-Drew RB JAC
According to Pete Prisco of CBS Sports, the feeling inside the Jaguars locker room is that holdout Maurice Jones-Drew "shows up soon."

Pete Prisco on Twitter
Prisco is based out of Jacksonville, so he's more qualified than most national voices for a litmus test on the locker room. While Priso does not seem to be reporting here, it's conceivable that Jones-Drew would have confided in teammates about his plans. Perhaps it has finally sunk in that the front office will not budge on Jones-Drews' contract.
Report: Rookie K Bullock remains favorite 08-21-2012
Randy Bullock K HOU
SI's Peter King confirms rookie Randy Bullock remains the favorite to beat out veteran Shayne Graham for Texans' kicking duties.

SI.com
Bullock has had some "shaky moments" in training camp, and missed a 51-yard field goal versus the 49ers. Unless he stubs his toe in the next two weeks, though, the fifth-round investment will likely be the deciding factor in this competition.
Seahawks could turn back to Flynn next week 08-21-2012
Matt Flynn QB OAK
If rookie Russell Wilson struggles in his preseason Week 3 start versus the Chiefs, coach Pete Carroll hasn't ruled out starting Matt Flynn in the preseason finale.

ESPN.com
The Seahawks know what they have in Flynn, but they want to see how Wilson handles the pressure of starting. Carroll knows he has one of the top young defenses in the league. The goal is to find out if Wilson can add a more dynamic big-play presence on the offensive side of the ball. Wilson is now in the driver's seat for the Week 1 start.
Vick doesn't believe rib injury is serious 08-21-2012
Michael Vick QB PHI
A source close to Michael Vick tells the Philadelphia Inquirer the quarterback "sounded optimistic" that the injury to his ribs is not serious.

Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News
Although Vick's X-rays came back negative, the team is still awaiting the results of his MRI and CT scan before cartilage damage can be ruled out. Vick's ranking remains unchanged in the Rotoworld Draft Guide. Injury risk has been factored in all along, counterbalanced by Vick's tremendous upside. It's not a bad idea to grab a high-end backup in the eighth or ninth round, however.
Report: Steelers expect Wallace this weekend 08-21-2012
Mike Wallace WR MIA
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports unsigned restricted free agent Mike Wallace is expected to sign his one-year tender and report to team facilities this weekend.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Wallace will re-join teammates after they square off against the Bills Saturday night, leaving two weeks and the final preseason game to tune up for the season opener. Although beat writer Ed Bouchette had previously opined that Wallace's actions had eliminated any chance of a long-term deal in Pittsburgh, he now believes the sides could reopen negotiations over the next two weeks. Our concern is that Wallace could spend September running clear-out routes for Antonio Brown after missing Todd Haley's offensive install in offseason practices and training camp.
Vikings CB Chris Cook has concussion 08-21-2012
Chris Cook CB MIN
Vikings RCB Chris Cook suffered a concussion in last Friday's win over the Bills.

Jeremy Fowler on Twitter
He won't play in Friday's dress rehearsal against the Chargers. It's the first known concussion of Cook's three-year career, so it's possible he'll avoid a lengthy absence. Chris Carr or rookie Brandon Burton will start opposite Antoine Winfield if Cook isn't ready for Week 1.
Frazier confirms AP won't see preseason reps 08-21-2012
Adrian Peterson RB MIN
Coach Leslie Frazier confirmed Tuesday that Adrian Peterson (knee) won't play in the Vikings' final two preseason games.

Jeremy Fowler on Twitter
Frazier stressed the move has nothing to do with Peterson's progress, and is strictly precautionary. It's unideal that Peterson's first live reps since shredding his left knee will come in a regular-season game, but there's been nary a discouraging report on his rehab. AP will be limited for potentially 2-3 games, but could be back to full speed by the season's second month.

Pagano: Collie day-to-day 08-21-2012
Austin Collie WR IND
Colts coach Chuck Pagano reiterated Tuesday that Austin Collie (concussion) is day-to-day, and said he won't encourage the 26-year-old wideout to retire.

Mike Chappell on Twitter
Pagano said it wasn't "his call" to encourage Collie to hang up his cleats following his fourth concussion in 21 months. Collie is reportedly "feeling great," and is day-to-day by nearly every estimation, but his injury history dictates a great deal of patience. Day-to-day could very easily turn into "week-to-week."
Donnie Avery will play Saturday 08-21-2012
Donnie Avery WR KC
Colts WR Donnie Avery (hip) is expected to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Redskins.

Mike Chappell on Twitter
The injury prone fourth-year pro missed Indy's first two exhibition tilts, but will finally get a chance to showcase his wares following a puff-piece filled offseason. Avery was supposedly entrenched as the No. 3 wideout as recently as last week, but he could find himself surpassed by impressive rookie LaVon Brazill. Avery isn't worth the hassle in fantasy leagues.
Bears FS Conte out 'a while' 08-21-2012
Chris Conte S CHI
Bears FS Chris Conte will be out "a while" after suffering a shoulder injury in Saturday's preseason game against the Redskins.

Chicago Sun-Times
"His shoulder's a little sore right now," coach Lovie Smith said Monday. Reserve S Brandon Hardin is day-to-day with a neck injury. It sounds like Conte could still be ready for Week 1, but Craig Steltz should start opposite Major Wright if he isn't.
Schiano: Martin reminds me of Ray Rice 08-21-2012
Doug Martin RB TB
Bucs coach Greg Schiano admits rookie RB Doug Martin has "definitely reminded him" of Ray Rice.

Bucs on Twitter
"At times," Schiano allowed. Regardless, LeGarrette Blount doesn't stand a chance. The Bucs are enamored with the No. 31 pick, and rightfully so based on his work through two preseason games. Blount still appears set for a decent amount of early-down work early in the year, but Martin should vastly out-touch him by season's end.
Corey Peters still out indefinitely 08-21-2012
Corey Peters DT ATL
Falcons DT Corey Peters (foot) remains without a timetable for a return.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution
"Right now, Corey is only working on the side (with the training staff) and only working in the training room basically in a rehabilitation mode," coach Mike Smith said. Peters has yet to practice in camp, making him a candidate for the reserve/PUP list. If Peters isn't ready for Week 1, the Falcons are expected to roll the dice with first-round bust Peria Jerry - who's supposedly having a strong camp - in his absence.
Batiste favorite for left-tackle duties? 08-21-2012

Unless second-year pro D.J. Young "wows" the coaching staff, the Arizona Republic expects journeyman D'Anthony Batiste to be named the Cardinals' left tackle.

Kent Somers on Twitter
Batiste was beginning to assert himself at right tackle before LT Levi Brown's season-threatening triceps injury. Beat writer Kent Somers believes rookie Bobby Massie will be the favorite to start at right tackle if Batiste is shifted to the blindside. An eight-year veteran, Batiste has appeared in 22 total games for six different teams, making just four starts. Protection is going to be a huge issue for presumptive quarterback John Skelton.
Jerry: Felix's roster spot not in danger 08-21-2012
Felix Jones RB PHI
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones calls the notion that Felix Jones' roster spot could be in jeopardy a "ridiculous thought."

ESPN Dallas
"I'm not worried about him at all," Jones said. "From what I've seen out there, he's got a chance to have a big year for us." Per ESPN Dallas' Tim MacMahon, Jones' "most memorable moment" in camp was failing his conditioning test. "It's really a ridiculous thought to believe that Felix Jones, based on what he's done in California, is on the verge of a big year," MacMahon quipped. DeMarco Murray is going to carry a massive load in Big D.
Bowe may not play Friday 08-21-2012
Dwayne Bowe WR KC
Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel is unsure if Dwayne Bowe will play in Friday's preseason game.

Kansas City Star
"He's learning a new system, new terminology, and he hasn't had any contact," Crennel said. "Generally, when you start contact, you get a little sore, you get a little beat up, so what we'll have to determine is how much we think he can take." If Bowe doesn't suit up against the Seahawks, it means he'll likely receive zero preseason reps in new OC Brian Daboll's system. When it comes to Bowe's early-season performance, however, his familiarity with Matt Cassel should outweigh his unfamiliarity with Daboll's offense.
Rashean Mathis to make preseason debut 08-21-2012
Rashean Mathis CB JAC
Jaguars CB Rashean Mathis (ACL surgery) will make his preseason debut Thursday.

Florida Times Union
Mathis has been practicing all camp, but sat out the Jaguars' first two exhibition games. He's nine months removed from tearing his ACL. "We definitely don't feel like we're rushing anything. I've been practicing and busting my butt doing all the right things on and off the field," Mathis said. Mathis is expected to start opposite Derek Cox, with Aaron Ross handling nickel duties.
Paper confirms AP unlikely for preseason 08-21-2012
Adrian Peterson RB MIN
The Minneapolis Star-Tribune confirms the Vikings are expected to hold Adrian Peterson (knee) out of their final two preseason games.

Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Both the Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press believe Peterson remains on track for Week 1, however. The Vikings increased AP's practice load on Monday, and waking up with no unusual soreness on Tuesday would be a big step in his recovery.
Jerry Jones confirms Bryant is 'fine' 08-21-2012
Dez Bryant WR DAL
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirms Dez Bryant (knee tendinitis) is expected to be "fine."

ESPN Dallas
"I would think he's probably going to be limited this weekend, but we were quite relieved that he doesn't have any structural damage in there," Jones said. By "limited," Jones likely means Bryant won't suit up for Saturday's preseason game against the Rams, but all signs point to Bryant being at or near 100 percent for Week 1. His health isn't a concern.
Cowboys expect Austin to be ready for Week 1 08-21-2012
Miles Austin WR DAL
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones expects Miles Austin (hamstring) to miss the rest of the preseason, but to be ready for Week 1.

ESPN Dallas
"We're basically just wanting to make sure he's ready for (Week 1)," Jones said Tuesday. "That's where it's all headed for him. ... The risks of him getting out there and really competing at this time would I think be overruled (by) the game we have for him being completely healthy in New York." Austin has been sidelined since August 4, meaning he'll enter the regular season with zero preseason reps. It's not a huge concern for a veteran player, but Austin's chronically injured hamstring certainly is. His upside remains high, but he's a risk in fantasy drafts.
Rod Streater well ahead of Juron Criner 08-21-2012
Rod Streater WR OAK
According to the Contra Costa Times, undrafted rookie WR Rod Streater has out-played fifth-round WR Juron Criner in "camp and games."

Steve Corkran on Twitter
Criner was the talk of the Raiders' offseason program, but hasn't been nearly as impressive since putting on pads. Criner has only two catches for 31 yards through two preseason games, while Streater has snagged 13 balls for 109 yards. With the Raiders' receiver corps in disarray, Streater is someone to keep in mind in the flier rounds of PPR drafts. Criner is off the radar in redraft leagues.
David Gettis still sidelined 08-21-2012
David Gettis WR CAR
Panthers WR David Gettis (hamstring) remains sidelined.

Charlotte Observer
Gettis apparently remains on the camp/PUP list, and the Charlotte Observer believes it's cost him any shot at the Panthers' No. 3 job, or even a part of a No. 3 committee. Seyi Ajirotutu, Kealoha Pilares and Louis Murphy could all rotate snaps behind Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell. Gettis is completely off the radar in fantasy leagues.
Deion Branch sees heavy preseason action 08-21-2012
Deion Branch WR NE
Deion Branch played 73-of-74 snaps in Monday's preseason game against the Eagles.

ESPN Boston
Branch was one of the only Patriots' regulars to see extensive playing time, and he used it to make three catches for 51 yards. Tom Brady was inactive. ESPN Boston believes the performance "would seem to solidify" Branch's standing as the Pats' No. 3 receiver behind Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd.
Jon Beason questionable for Week 1 08-21-2012
Jon Beason LB CAR
Panthers MLB Jon Beason (hamstring) is questionable for Week 1.

Charlotte Observer
Beason has missed the majority of camp with an injury he admits he suffered while overcompensating for his surgically-repaired Achilles' tendon. With Thomas Davis (knee, calf) also iffy for Week 1, a big load is going to fall on rookie WLB Luke Kuechly, who is locked in as a starter.
Bucs only team to place claim on Shipley 08-21-2012
Jordan Shipley WR JAC
TheSidelineView.com reports the Bucs were the only team to place a waiver claim on WR Jordan Shipley.

Adam Caplan on Twitter
Per reporter Adam Caplan, teams were "obviously concerned" Shipley's ACL. Shipley was waived by the Bengals in part because "the knee was not responding." Shipley's not a major threat to Preston Parker's slot duties in Tampa.
Marvin Austin 'seems to be getting better' 08-21-2012
Marvin Austin DT NYG
Giants DT Marvin Austin (back) "seems to be getting better."

New York Daily News
The word comes from coach Tom Coughlin, who hinted the only reason Austin has yet to resume practicing is concern about "the type of medication he's on and whether he can practice under that circumstance." With Shaun Rogers done for the year and Chris Canty (knee) questionable for Week 1, the Giants need Austin back as soon as possible.
Carlton Mitchell has 'barely practiced' 08-21-2012
Carlton Mitchell WR DAL
Browns WR Carlton Mitchell has "barely practiced" this summer because of a leg muscle injury.

ESPN Cleveland
The injury held Mitchell out of Cleveland's second preseason game after he caught just one pass for 33 yards in the opener. Already on the roster bubble, Mitchell's injury has likely sealed his Browns fate.
Thomas Davis not ruled out for Week 1 08-21-2012
Thomas Davis LB CAR
Panthers WLB Thomas Davis (knee, calf) hasn't been ruled out for Week 1.

Charlotte Observer
"If Thomas is feeling strong enough and we feel he's made a strong enough recovery, we feel that he'll play," coach Ron Rivera said. "He looks good right now." Attempting to become the first player in league history to come back from three ACL tears to the same knee, Davis missed a large chunk of camp with a calf injury, but saw his workload ramped up on Monday. If he's active, Davis' snaps figure to be limited early in the regular season.
Hakeem Nicks may not play Friday 08-21-2012
Hakeem Nicks WR NYG
Hakeem Nicks (foot surgery) is unsure if he'll be ready for Friday's preseason game after returning to practice on Monday.

New York Daily News
"I still don't know," Nicks said. "They'll see how it goes this week in practice, and then let me go out this Friday. But I think it's going to be based on team doctors and a coach's decision, and I'm all for whatever they decide." It's quite possible Nicks won't receive any preseason reps, but it won't be a concern for the fourth-year pro.
Dolphins more likely to keep Moore? 08-21-2012
David Garrard QB NYJ
The Miami Herald expects the Dolphins to keep Matt Moore over David Garrard.

Miami Herald
The Dolphins are up against the salary cap, and Garrard packs a bigger monetary hit than Moore. Per beat writer Armando Salguero, Garrard is also "not exactly ahead of schedule" in his rehab from knee surgery. Those factors coupled with Moore's competent play down the stretch last season make him the heavy favorite to keep his roster spot and back-up rookie Ryan Tannehill.
Michael Vick set for MRI, CT scan 08-21-2012
Michael Vick QB PHI
Although X-rays came back negative, Michael Vick will undergo an MRI and CT scan of his injured ribs on Tuesday.

Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News
It's standard procedure, but it's possible the advanced testing will discover something Vick's X-rays didn't. "He's sore," coach Andy Reid said. "He got a good shot there. The precautionary measure is to see if it's involving cartilage there." It's doubtful the further testing will discover anything major, and Vick is still a safe bet to start in Week 1. He'll be doing so with just 12 preseason snaps under his belt, however.
Russell Wilson to start third preseason game? 08-21-2012
Russell Wilson QB SEA
The Seattle Times expects Russell Wilson to start the Seahawks' third preseason game on Friday.

Seattle Times
Jeff Demps gets hefty guarantee 08-21-2012
Jeff Demps RB TB
The Patriots have fully guaranteed $200,000 of KR/RB Jeff Demps' $390,000 base salary.

NFL.com
Demps' deal also includes an $11,000 signing bonus, the second largest for any undrafted free agent this season. Eligible to begin practicing on Wednesday, the former Olympic sprinter will likely be active for Friday's preseason game against the Bucs.
Coach: Collie felt 'really good' on Monday 08-21-2012
Austin Collie WR IND
Colts coach Chuck Pagano says Austin Collie (concussion) "came in and felt really good" on Monday, but pledged to take things slow with the four-times concussed receiver.

Profootballtalk on NBCSports.com
"Again, player safety is first and foremost," Pagano said. "We are always going to err on the side of caution as we talked about before. ... We'll just take it day-to-day with him but we'll be smart." Collie has yet to even confirm his concussion diagnosis, so it's clear he's not dealing with a "major" concussion that could sideline him for months. It will be up to his doctor to take a long-view of his life and career, however. Collie should be considered doubtful for Week 1 for the time being.
Jon Baldwin off to slow preseason start 08-21-2012
Jon Baldwin WR KC
Chiefs second-year WR Jon Baldwin has just one reception for seven yards through two preseason games. And he was stripped by rookie CB Janoris Jenkins on the lone catch. Baldwin starred in OTAs and early training-camp practices, but we've yet to see it show up in preseason games. It will be interesting to see this season whether Baldwin earns a starting job over Steve Breaston. With Dwayne Bowe back from his three-week holdout, that No. 2 receiver job should be up for grabs.
Reid: Nick Foles making run up depth chart 08-21-2012
Nick Foles QB PHI
Coach Andy Reid confirmed after Monday night's preseason game that rookie Nick Foles is making a strong run to unseat Mike Kafka as the Eagles' No. 2 quarterback.

Reuben Frank on Twitter
Foles has been prolific this preseason, albeit largely against backups, and he's got big talent advantages on Kafka and Trent Edwards. "We'll go back and look at it and see," said Reid in his post-game presser. "But you can see him progress. I don't think I've ever had a rookie QB have two preseason games like this."
