Guard Matt Janning to workout for Wolves 08-14-2013
Matt Janning G DEN
Free agent guard Matt Janning is scheduled to work out for the Timberwolves on Thursday.

Darren Wolfson on Twitter
He was undrafted and didn't play in a game for the Suns last season. It's doubtful he'll make the Wolves final roster at this point, and there's almost no chance that he would offer any fantasy value this season if he makes it.
Chris Copeland feeling great after surgery 08-14-2013
Chris Copeland SF NO
Chris Copeland called his knee surgery nothing more than a "nuisance" and fully expects to be ready by the start of the season.

Scott Agness on Twitter
He had surgery less than two weeks ago but is already lifting waits and feeling good. "It was more of a nuisance than an actual injury," he said. His return timetable is still 6-8 weeks, so we're hoping he's feeling as good a month from now as he is today. The Pacers are loaded at forward, meaning Copeland will likely be a role player off the bench this season.
Report: Howard was almost a Rocket in 2012 08-14-2013
Dwight Howard C ATL
Dwight Howard was nearly dealt to the Rockets at the 2012 trade deadline, according to Rockets GM Daryl Morey.

CBS Sports
Morey told CBS Radio's John Feinstein about discussions with the Magic prior to the 2012 deadline. "We [had tried] to trade for him twice," Morey said. "In fact, once we were allowed to talk to Dwight when free agency started off, he told us how - and we didn't know this for sure - but how Orlando basically told him he was going to get traded to us if he didn't re-up with them a couple years back when he resigned. He was almost a Rocket a couple times." League sources confirmed Morey's account, saying the Rockets and Magic did tentatively agree to a deal in March 2012 that would've included some of the young pieces that helped lure Howard to Houston.
Pacers hire Popeye Jones as assistant coach 08-14-2013
Popeye Jones F GS
The Pacers hired Popeye Jones as an assistant coach.
Jones spent the past three seasons with the Nets organization, including one season in player development and the last two years as an assistant coach. Prior to that, Jones was a part of Mavs' player development staff. He replaced Jim Boylen, who left to join the Spurs staff.
Brown: Nerlens Noel a 'building-block player' 08-14-2013
Nerlens Noel F DAL
New 76ers coach Brett Brown called Nerlens Noel a "building-block player" and said he'd love to have him available this season.

Christopher A. Vito on Twitter
Of course, any new coach would love to have a talent like Noel available to him in his first season, but Noel is likely to be sidelined until at least Christmas, if not later. The rookie big man is still recovering from ACL surgery and just started running in late July. With the 76ers also clearly in the Andrew Wiggins sweepstakes, it wouldn't be surprising if Philly held Noel out even longer to make sure he's 100 percent healthy.
Brown will assemble coaching staff by Sept. 1 08-14-2013
Michael Curry F DET
New 76ers head coach Brett Brown said he expects to assemble his coaching staff by Sept. 1.

Christopher A. Vito on Twitter
GM Sam Hinkie said he's spoken to current assistants Michael Curry and Aaron McKie about their futures but was pretty cryptic as to what those conversations entailed. Things could get a bit strange for Curry, who lost out on the head coach job to Brown. We also imagine Brown will have some of his own assistants in mind considering his lengthy career as an NBA assistant.
Ennis expects to be on 2014-15 Heat roster 08-14-2013
James Ennis F MEM
James Ennis says the Heat have told him they plan to have him on their roster for the 2014-15 season.
Ennis signed with the Perth Wildcats in Australia for the upcoming season, but the contract has a full opt-out clause to allow Ennis to return to the NBA without penalty. The Heat were supportive of Ennis heading to Australia due to the lack of playing time behind LeBron James and the the experience Ennis can get down under.
Report: Ryan Anderson's girlfriend died 08-14-2013
Ryan Anderson F HOU
Ryan Anderson's girlfriend, Gia Allemand, has died, according to TMZ.
Allemand was hospitalized and in critical condition due to an undisclosed illness. The 29-year old appeared on "The Bachelor" in 2010 and had been dating Anderson since 2011. Our thoughts go out to her family, friends and to Anderson.
Saunders: Pek deal doesn't affect Rubio, Love 08-14-2013
Ricky Rubio G MIN
Timberwolves president Flip Saunders says the new deal for Nikola Pekovic doesn't affect any future deals with Ricky Rubio and Kevin Love.

Timberwolves on Twitter
Pekovic agreed to a five-year, $60 million contract Wednesday. The size of the deal led to some immediate questions about the Wolves' ability to lock up their two superstars to long-term deals, but Saunders doesn't seem to have much concern. Saunders was highly complementary of Love and Pek's compatibility and said he believes it takes three stars to win in the NBA today. Love will likely opt out of his deal after the 2014-15 season while Rubio can become a restricted free agent that summer.
Report: Jazz to hire Zanik as assistant GM 08-14-2013
Tyrone Corbin F Det
The Jazz are on the verge of hiring agent Justin Zanik as the team's assistant general manager, a source told ESPN's Jeff Goodman.

Jeff Goodman on Twitter
The Jazz didn't have an assistant GM last season, with Kevin O'Connor serving as the executive VP of basketball operations. Zanik has worked with agent Andy Miller over the past few years and represent several players, including Serge Ibaka.
Woodson not sure when Bargnani will return 08-14-2013
Andrea Bargnani C BKN
Knicks coach Mike Woodson said he's not sure when Andrea Bargnani (pneumonia) will return to the court.

Ian Begley on Twitter
Bargnani was diagnosed with the illness recently but is still hopeful he'll be able to play for Italy in Eurobasket. Woodson said he's not sure if that's an option, stressing the Knicks want to be careful with their new addition. While we're sure Bargnani would love to represent his country, he needs to understand how important this training camp and this upcoming season are for his NBA future. It doesn't sound like the Knicks have any interest in him playing in Eurobasket at this point, so it'll be worth watching to see whether he falls in line.
Mike Woodson cagey on Knicks' starting lineup 08-14-2013
Iman Shumpert G CLE
Knicks coach Mike Woodson said he's not sure who will start outside of Ray Felton, Carmelo Anthony and Tyson Chandler next season.

Ian Begley on Twitter
Woodson was asked specifically about Iman Shumpert starting at shooting guard and Woodson said that would be decided in training camp. Shumpert did some work on his point guard skills this summer, but there's not a lot of room for him there with Felton, Pablo Prigioni and Beno Udrih on the roster. As for the other frontcourt spot, we imagine Andrea Bargnani will get a shot, but the Knicks also have the flexibility to start small with Melo at the four and Metta World Peace or Shumpert on the wing in a two-point guard lineup. Shumpert and Bargnani's fantasy values will hinge on whether they'll receive consistent starting minutes.
Wolves, Pekovic agree to long-term contract 08-14-2013
Nikola Pekovic C MIN
The Timberwolves and Nikola Pekovic agreed to terms on a long-term contract.

Flip Saunders on Twitter
ESPN's Marc Stein reports the deal is for five years and is worth $60 million. The deal also includes up to $8 million in additional incentive-related bonuses. The deal ends a summer-long saga that saw both sides dancing around an agreement. In the end, Pekovic gets his long-term security and the Wolves get their preferred average annual value of $12 million.
Update: Greg Oden's deal is for one year 08-14-2013
Greg Oden C MIA
Greg Oden's contract with the Heat is for just one year and has no option for a second year, from either the team or the player, as was previously reported.

Mark Deeks on Twitter
This news has no fantasy implications, but it is interesting that Oden's financial future truly hinges on only the upcoming season. It remains to be seen how many minutes he can handle, or how many games his knees will allow him to play in. And even though there is some potential that he could rack up some points, boards and blocks this season, the potential reward is heavily outweighed by the risk that comes with drafting him.
Wizards officially sign F/C Al Harrington 08-14-2013
Al Harrington F WAS
Wizards sign free agent F/C Al Harrington.

Kyle Weidie on Twitter
Harrington is hoping the Wizards young studs (John Wall, Bradley Beal, Otto Porter) can make the playoffs and possibly help him win a championship. Harrington is coming off knee surgery and the Wizards are simply hoping he can put some time in as a back up big man. Don't draft him in your fantasy league, regardless of how deep it is.
Sixers waive G Justin Holiday 08-14-2013
Justin Holiday G NY
Sixers waive SG Justin Holiday.

Eric Pincus on Twitter
With Jason Richardson possibly out for the year, the only shooting guards left in Philly are James Anderson and Evan Turner, who was originally slated to play more small forward. With their lack of viable shooting guard options, Anderson is officially a deep sleeper that could see some decent minutes this season. Holiday was set to get some guaranteed money if not waived prior to August 15, which helps explains why they let him go.
Dwight Howard works out with Olajuwon 08-14-2013
Dwight Howard C ATL
Dwight Howard recently worked out with famed center Hakeem Olajuwon, who is helping to mentor the big man for his new team, the Rockets.

Houston Chronicle
Hopefully Hakeem gave Howard some tips on shooting free throws, but it's doubtful that would help him much (or that it happened). Howard is set for a bounce-back season now that his back is fully healthy, and the chip he has on his shoulder should also work in his favor. If you can stomach the poor free throw shooting, high turnovers and lack of assists, Howard should be one of the better fantasy centers around this season. But his free throw shooting is a major problem, and one that will be hard to overcome in all scoring formats except fantasy points.
Kirk Hinrich healthy, ready for Rose reunion 08-14-2013
Kirk Hinrich G ATL
Kirk Hinrich says he's fully healthy after rupturing his calf in the first round of the playoffs last season.

Chicago Tribune
"If I wasn't healthy I wouldn't be out here (on the golf course)," he said. "I'm feeling much better and feel like I've had a good offseason. I had time to take care of my body, heal up and start preparing for next year." Hinrich's health will be a concern this year, as will his role with the team. He should come off the bench and back up both PG Derrick Rose and SG Jimmy Butler. And because minutes (as well as his health) will be a bit of a concern, he should only be looked at late in fantasy drafts.
Brook Lopez in a walking boot after surgery 08-14-2013
Brook Lopez C BKN
Brook Lopez has been in a walking boot since having surgery on his right foot in June, but expects to be ready for the start of the season.

New York Post
"I feel great," Lopez said. "I have been getting in some weight lifting, getting shots up and everything is going well. I'm not fully working out. I'm not jumping or running or anything like that, but we have a good month-and-a-half just until training camp starts, so we'll definitely be all right by then." Lopez is highly optimistic he'll be ready to go, but you'll want to keep your eye on his status as training camp approaches. At this point we're not ready to drop him on our draft board.
R Anderson's girlfriend in critical condition 08-14-2013
Ryan Anderson F HOU
Ryan Anderson's girlfriend, Gia Allemand, has been hospitalized and is in critical condition with an undisclosed illness.
Allemand appeared on 'The Bachelor' in 2010 and our thoughts go out to her family, friends and Anderson. Obviously, his mind is not on his basketball career right now, and we can only hope that her condition improves soon.
