Justin Verlander to start Game 5 for Tigers 10-08-2013
Justin Verlander P DET
Justin Verlander will start ALDS Game 5 against the Athletics on Thursday.

Jane Lee on Twitter
The Tigers used Max Scherzer for two innings in relief in Game 4, so Verlander will not get the ball in Oakland. The A's have yet to announce their starter, but it will be either Bartolo Colon or Sonny Gray. He held the A's scoreless while striking out 11 over seven innings in Game 2 last weekend. Scherzer should be ready to go for Game 1 of the ALCS should the Tigers advance.
Doug Fister posts quality start vs. A's 10-08-2013
Doug Fister P HOU
Doug Fister was charged with three runs on seven hits and a walk over six innings in Tuesday's 8-6 win over the Athletics. Fister had zero command in the first two frames, allowing a run on three hits, a walk and a wild pitch. He started to settle in over the next couple innings before serving up a two-out, two-run shot to Jed Lowrie in the fifth. After a scoreless sixth, Fister was pulled in favor of Max Scherzer. The Tigers gave up three runs over three relief frames but survived to fight another day. Justin Verlander will start for them in Oakland Thursday.
Dan Straily strikes out eight on no-decision 10-08-2013
Dan Straily P MIA
Dan Straily struck out eight while allowing three runs over six frames in Tuesday's loss to the Tigers. One bad inning and one really bad pitch did Straily in. The right-hander had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning when Prince Fielder led off with a bloop single. A Victor Martinez single and then home run by Jhonny Peralta -- which came on a fastball up and over the plate -- followed. Straily retired the next three batters and had a scoreless sixth but was then pulled despite having thrown only 76 pitches. The A's bullpen then proceeded to allow five runs over the next two frames.
Jhonny Peralta homers as Tigers extend series 10-08-2013
Jhonny Peralta 3B STL
Jhonny Peralta hit a game-tying, three-run homer in the fifth inning of Tuesday's win over the Athletics. With the Tigers' offense struggling, things were looking bleak after the A's got out to a 3-0 lead. Peralta ignited things with the two-out blast in the fifth and Detroit wound up plating eight on the night in the two-run victory. It was Peralta's first longball since August 3, which was two days before he began serving his PED suspension. Victor Martinez also had a big day for the Tigers, going 3-for-4 with a dinger of his own.
Coco Crisp gets four hits in Game 4 loss 10-08-2013
Coco Crisp LF CLE
Coco Crisp went 4-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored in Tuesday's loss to the Tigers. Crisp led off the game with a triple and tacked on singles in three of his next four trips to the plate. In the two games in Detroit, Crisp wound up with seven hits in nine at-bats, scoring four runs and stealing a base in the process. Jed Lowrie also had a big day at the plate for the A's with an RBI single and a two-run homer. It wasn't enough, though, as Oakland fell shot in the slugfest.
Cards not ruling out NLCS start for Miller 10-08-2013
Shelby Miller P ARZ
The Cardinals haven't ruled out giving Shelby Miller a start should they advance to the NLCS.
Miller has been limited to one relief inning during the NLDS. Lance Lynn struggled during his division series start and would be an option to switch spots with Miller, though the Cards haven't given any indication that that could be their course of action. Lynn (and Miller) will be available out of the bullpen in Game 5 Wednesday.
Morales to reject Mariners' qualifying offer 10-08-2013
Kendrys Morales DH TOR
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that Kendrys Morales will reject the Mariners' qualifying offer.

CBS Sports
That offer -- a one-year contract that should be worth around $14 million -- will be officially made after the conclusion of the postseason. Morales wants a multi-year contract and will seek it out on the open market, but his free agent value is going to take a major hit once he officially rejects the qualifying sum because the 30-year-old DH will then be tied to draft pick compensation.

Wil Myers 1B SD

Bob Nightengale on Twitter
It's a nice depth-building move for the Cubs, who got a decent .266/.324/.448 batting in 212 plate appearances this summer from Sweeney. The 28-year-old will likely serve as a fourth outfielder next season in Chicago.

Michael Morse to undergo left wrist surgery 10-08-2013
Michael Morse 1B PIT
Michael Morse will undergo surgery on his left wrist.

Roch Kubatko on Twitter
The decision was made after Morse received a second opinion at the Mayo Clinic. The 31-year-old batted just .215/.270/.381 with 13 homers in 337 plate appearances this season between the Mariners and Orioles, but could make sense as a buy-low option in free agency.

Henry Blanco C ARZ

Jarrod Parker P OAK
Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Tuesday that it looks like Jarrod Parker is battling some fatigue or dead arm symptoms.

Joe Stiglich on Twitter

Arroyo doesn't expect qualifying offer 10-08-2013
Bronson Arroyo P LAD
Bronson Arroyo told Mark Sheldon of on Friday that he hasn't heard from the Reds and doesn't expect to receive a qualifying offer from the club.
"I've heard not a word," said Arroyo. "The sense I have, I don't think they'll make me a [qualifying] offer. They would have to offer me $13-14 million for me to stay anyway." Arroyo recently told the Boston Globe that he wants a three-year deal and he stands a good chance to get it since no draft pick compensation will be attached.

Max Scherzer P WAS
Max Scherzer could be available out of the bullpen in Game 4 of the ALDS against the Athletics on Tuesday.

Chris Iott on Twitter
Basically, it's all hands on deck as the Tigers attempt to keep their season alive. If Scherzer pitches and Detroit wins, Justin Verlander would pitch a deciding Game 5.

Clayton Kershaw goes six strong on short rest 10-08-2013
Clayton Kershaw P LAD
Pitching on short rest, Clayton Kershaw allowed two unearned runs over six innings in Monday's 4-3 victory over the Braves. He gave up just three hits, walked one and struck out six. Kershaw's stuff looked just fine on three days' rest, as he was sitting comfortably in the mid-90s with sharp offspeed offerings. He was at 91 pitches through six frames and certainly would have remained in had he been on regular rest, but manager Don Mattingly entrusted the final nine outs to the bullpen. After Ronald Belisario gave up a run in his one-third of an inning of work, J.P. Howell, Brian Wilson and Kenley Jansen closed things out while the Dodgers' offense rallied. Los Angeles will get either the Pirates or Cardinals in the NLCS, with Zack Greinke on tap for Game 1.
Freddy Garcia pitches well in no-decision 10-08-2013
Freddy Garcia P ATL
Freddy Garcia held the Dodgers to two runs over six innings in Monday's loss. Garcia gave up eight hits -- including a pair of homers -- and walked two. He was running on fumes in the sixth and should have been removed, but he managed to get through the inning and ultimately gave the Braves all they could have hoped for. Atlanta took a 3-2 lead into the eighth inning, but David Carpenter coughed it up while Craig Kimbrel stood on the bullpen mound, looking helpless.
Dodgers advance following Juan Uribe's homer 10-08-2013
Juan Uribe 3B CLE
Juan Uribe smacked a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth inning of Monday's win over the Braves. Uribe was initially asked to bunt in the one-run game following a leadoff double by Yasiel Puig. He failed in two attempts, though, and then was allowed to swing away, drilling a hanging David Carpenter slider over the left field wall. Uribe also had a double on the night and batted .375/.375/.813 for the series.
Carl Crawford slugs two homers for Dodgers 10-08-2013
Carl Crawford LF LAD

Crawford led off the bottom of the first inning for the Dodgers with a solo shot on a hanging splitter and then turned on a Freddy Garcia in the third, driving it over the wall. Brian McCann gets the Golden Sombrero 10-08-2013
Brian McCann C HOU
Brian McCann went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts in Monday's loss to the Dodgers. His Braves' career, which is likely over, ends with a Golden Sombrero. McCann wound up going hitless in 13 at-bats in the series, though he did draw three walks. Jason Heyward (.167/.167/.333) and Justin Upton (.143/.333/.214) also failed to show up for the series.
