Heyward's two-run single pulls Braves even 10-04-2013
Jason Heyward RF CHC
Jason Heyward delivered a clutch two-out, two-run single in the seventh inning on Friday, helping to lead the Braves to a 4-3 victory in Game 2 of the NLDS. In a battle of wits with Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez, Don Mattingly opted to walk Reed Johnson intentionally to load the bases for Heyward, thinking he'd be the easier out against southpaw Paco Rodriguez, and Heyward made him pay. With the victory, the Braves salvage one game at home and will head to Los Angeles on Sunday with the series knotted up at one game apiece.
Kimbrel gets four outs to preserve Game 2 win 10-04-2013
Craig Kimbrel P BOS
Craig Kimbrel was successfully called upon to get four outs in Game 2 of the NLDS on Friday, preserving a one-run advantage and allowing the Braves to even up the series at 1-1. The most dominant closer in the game certainly proved his worth in this one. He surrendered a one-out walk to A.J. Ellis in the ninth, but pinch-runner Dee Gordon was cut down attempting to steal second base on a very close. Pinch-hitter Andre Ethier then drew a two-out walk, but Carl Crawford was punched out to end the game. It's Kimbrel's first career postseason save in five appearances.
Mike Minor impressive in victory over Dodgers 10-04-2013
Mike Minor P KC
Mike Minor was impressive in Friday's victory over the Dodgers to even the NLDS at a game apiece, surrendering just one run on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings. Minor whiffed five in the ballgame while walking only one. The only blemish on his afternoon was an RBI double by Hanley Ramirez in the first inning. The Dodgers had several other chances to score against him, but Minor was able to bear down and get big outs when he needed to. With his success in this outing, and Kris Medlen's struggles on Thursday, there could be a tough decision to make over who would get the ball in a potential Game 5 of the series should it be necessary.
Ramirez homers, plates three but Dodgers fall 10-04-2013
Hanley Ramirez 1B BOS
Hanley Ramirez had a monster day at the dish in Game 2 of the NLDS on Friday, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a homer and three RBI in a losing effort against the Braves. Ramirez was single-handedly responsible for all of the Dodgers offense in this one. His RBI double opened the scoring in the first inning, and his two-run blast off David Carpenter in the eighth pulled the Dodgers to within a run at 4-3, but that would be as close as they'd get.
Zack Greinke pitches well in loss to Braves 10-04-2013
Zack Greinke P ARZ
Zack Greinke pitched well in Friday's loss to the Braves in Game 1 of the NLDS, allowing just two runs on four hits over his six innings of work. Greinke fanned three on the afternoon without issuing a walk. He was lifted after just 83 pitches when Michael Young pinch-hit with a runner on second and one out in the seventh inning. It was a nice showing from the talented 29-year-old right-hander, who had owned a career 6.48 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over three previous postseason starts.
Yankees make offer, await Girardi's response 10-04-2013
Joe Girardi C NYY
The Yankees have officially made a contract offer to manager Joe Girardi, and are awaiting his response.

ESPN New York
While the financial details of the offer are not yet known, it is believed to be substantial. Girardi is expected to take the weekend to make a decision. His current deal with the Yankees officially expires on November 1, so other teams would have to wait until then to discuss any potential managerial openings.
Saltalamacchia plates three in rout of Rays 10-04-2013
Jarrod Saltalamacchia C DET
Jarrod Saltalamacchia went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI on Friday, helping to lead the Red Sox in a 12-2 rout over the Rays in Game 1 of the ALDS. Saltalamacchia delivered a two-run single off Matt Moore in the fifth inning, increasing the Red Sox advantage to 7-2, then capped off the scoring with a run-scoring single in the eighth. Jonny Gomes and Shane Victorino each plated a pair of runs as well in the offensive outburst.
Lester fans seven as Red Sox roll in Game 1 10-04-2013
Jon Lester P CHC
Jon Lester racked up seven strikeouts as the Red Sox rolled to a decisive victory over the Rays in Game 1 of the ALDS on Friday. The 29-year-old southpaw allowed just a pair of runs on three hits and three walks over 7 2/3 strong innings. The only damage against him came on a pair of solo shots from Sean Rodriguez and Ben Zobrist. He'll get the ball again should the Red Sox face a decisive Game 5 on Thursday in Boston.
Sean Rodriguez homers in loss to Red Sox 10-04-2013
Sean Rodriguez 2B ATL
Sean Rodriguez, who has made a habit of crushing left-handed pitching, smashed a solo homer in Friday's loss to the Red Sox in Game 1 of the ALDS. Rodriguez got the start in left field due to his ability to crush southpaws, and didn't disappoint by depositing a Jon Lester offering over the wall in left-center to open the scoring in the second inning. Unfortunately for the Rays, it was one of only two runs they would generate in the game, the other coming on a solo blast from Ben Zobrist.
Matt Moore hammered in loss to Red Sox 10-04-2013
Matt Moore P SF
Matt Moore was hammered in Friday's loss to the Red Sox in the opener of the ALDS, surrendering seven runs on eight hits in just 4 1/3 innings. The 24-year-old southpaw was brilliant during the regular season, but didn't bring his A-game against a hungry Red Sox lineup in this one. He was staked to an early 2-0 lead, but the Red Sox broke through for five runs in the fourth inning to jump on top, and added another pair in the fifth before chasing Moore from the ballgame. With as shaky of an outing as it was, it'll be interesting to see who Joe Maddon gives the ball to should there be a decisive Game 5 in the series.
D'Backs claim Alex Sanabia off waivers 10-04-2013
Alex Sanabia P ARZ
Diamondbacks claimed RHP Alex Sanabia off waivers from the Marlins. The 25-year-old right-hander joins the Diamondbacks 40-man roster. He made 10 starts for the Marlins in 2013, posting a 3-7 record, 4.88 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 31/25 K/BB ratio over 55 1/3 innings. He's unlikely to have much fantasy value even if he does make the Opening Day roster in Arizona.
Tommy Hottovy elects to become free agent 10-04-2013
Tommy Hottovy P TOR
Tommy Hottovy has elected free agency. The 32-year-old southpaw spent the entirety of the 2013 season in the minor leagues, registering a 4.19 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 42/17 K/BB ratio over 43 innings between Double-A and Triple-A. He'll look for a new organization to continue his pitching career in 2014.
Justin Germano elects to become free agent 10-04-2013
Justin Germano P SEA
Justin Germano has elected free agency. The 31-year-old right-hander appeared in just one game for the Blue Jays in 2013, allowing a pair of runs on six hits over two disappointing innings. He'll look to latch on elsewhere this offseason.
Dave Bush elects to become free agent 10-04-2013
Dave Bush P TOR
Dave Bush has elected free agency. The 33-year-old right-hander fought his way back to the big leagues for the first time since the 2011 season, but surrendered five runs on five hits, including four homers, in his three innings of work. He'll try to continue his career on a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training.
Andy LaRoche elects to become free agent 10-04-2013
Andy LaRoche 3B TOR
Andy Laroche has elected free agency. A once highly-touted prospect, the 30-year-old infielder appeared in just one game with the Blue Jays in 2013, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout. He hit .271/.339/.433 with 12 homers and 51 RBI in 104 games at Triple-A Buffalo.
Chien-Ming Wang elects free agency 10-04-2013
Chien-Ming Wang P KC
Chien-Ming Wang has elected free agency. The 33-year-old right-hander registered a disappointing 7.67 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 14/9 K/BB ratio over 27 innings in six starts with the Blue Jays in 2013. He'll attempt to continue his career with a new organization.
Jhonny Peralta not in Tigers Game 1 lineup 10-04-2013
Jhonny Peralta 3B STL
Jhonny Peralta is not in the lineup for Game 1 of the ALDS against the Athletics on Friday.

Detroit Tigers on Twitter
While Peralta will see time in left field during the postseason, he isn't expected to start on a nightly basis. The Tigers will roll with a lineup of Austin Jackson, Torii Hunter, Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Victor Martinez, Alex Avila, Omar Infante, Andy Dirks and Jose Iglesias against Bartolo Colon in Game 1.
Jaime Garcia says he's 'ahead of schedule' 10-04-2013
Jaime Garcia P ATL
Jaime Garcia (shoulder) has been throwing bullpen sessions for two weeks and said he's "ahead of schedule."

Joe Strauss on Twitter
Garcia underwent season-ending surgery on his left shoulder over four months ago and hasn't had any issues with his rehab. Barring a setback, the left-hander should be ready for spring training. What isn't known at this point is whether he'll have a spot in the rotation, as the Cardinals have plenty of options.
Gerrit Cole brilliant as Pirates take Game 2 10-04-2013
Gerrit Cole P PIT
Gerrit Cole was fantastic in Friday's 7-1 victory over the Cardinals, allowing just one run on two hits and two walks over six innings. Cole struck out five on the day. The young right-hander allowed a solo shot to Yadier Molina in the fifth inning but was otherwise in control all day, retiring 11 in a row at one point and only twice allowing a runner to reach second base. We'll have to see what Pirates manager Clint Hurdle says, but it would be a surprise if Cole doesn't get the ball in a potential Game 5 now given the contrast of his and A.J. Burnett's performances in St. Louis.
Lance Lynn clobbered in Friday's loss 10-04-2013
Lance Lynn P STL
Lance Lynn was touched up for five runs on seven hits and three walks over 4 1/3 frames in Friday's loss to the Pirates. Lynn struck out six and wasn't helped out much by his defense, but he wasn't sharp, either, requiring 83 pitches to cover the 4 1/3 innings. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny's somewhat surprising decision to start him in Game 2 now looks like a dubious one. The Cards will try to bounce back at PNC Park on Sunday with Joe Kelly on the hill.
Matt Harvey to undergo Tommy John surgery 10-04-2013
Matt Harvey P NYM
Brad Como of SNY reports that Matt Harvey will undergo surgery to repair a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.

Brad Como on Twitter
The Mets have confirmed the report. Harvey had yet to begin a throwing program, but he decide that an attempt at rehab wasn't worth it after further consultation from doctors. It's better for him to go ahead and get the surgery out of the way, anyway, as the ligament could have snapped at any moment. Dr. James Andrews will perform the operation on Harvey later this month, and the righty should be ready to go for the start of the 2015 season.
Michael Nickeas outrighted to Triple-A 10-04-2013
Mike Nickeas C TOR
Blue Jays sent C Michael Nickeas outright to Triple-A Buffalo. He's no longer on the 40-man roster. Nickeas hit only .166/.255/.251 this year for Buffalo.
Ricky Romero outrighted to Triple-A 10-04-2013
Ricky Romero P TOR
Blue Jays sent LHP Ricky Romero outright to Triple-A Buffalo. He's now again been removed from the 40-man roster. Romero posted an 11.05 ERA and 2.59 WHIP across 7 1/3 innings for the Jays this season. He'll get a spring training invite but is a longshot to make the Opening Day roster.
Pedro Alvarez goes deep in win over Cards 10-04-2013
Pedro Alvarez DH BAL
Pedro Alvarez doubled and ripped a two-run homer in Friday's win over the Cardinals. Alvarez hit a drive in the second inning that went for a ground-rule double after center fielder Jon Jay got a bad read on it. His third-inning blast was a no-doubter, though, traveling comfortably over the center field wall. Alvarez has now gone deep in each of the first two games of the NLDS.
Yadier Molina homers in Cards' loss 10-04-2013
Yadier Molina C STL
Yadier Molina belted a solo homer in Friday's loss to the Pirates. Molina launched an opposite-field shot deep into the right field bleachers in the fifth inning, but that only made it 5-1 and the Cardinals never got closer. St. Louis put up only four hits on the afternoon, with Matt Adams having a pair and Carlos Beltran tallying the other.
Yoenis Cespedes starting in LF Friday 10-04-2013
Yoenis Cespedes LF NYM
Yoenis Cespedes (shoulder) is starting in left field in Friday's Game 1 of the ALDS versus the Tigers.

Jane Lee on Twitter

Johan Santana begins throwing program 10-04-2013
Johan Santana P TOR
Johan Santana (shoulder) has begun a throwing program.

Johan Santana on Twitter
Santana revealed the news himself on Twitter. The details aren't available, but the left-hander says that it's "so far, so good" with his rehab. Santana, of course, missed all of 2013 after having surgery to repair a re-tear in the capsule in the front of his left shoulder. He's hoping to be ready for spring training.
Josh Wall claimed off waivers by Angels 10-04-2013
Josh Wall P CWS
Angels claimed RHP Josh Wall off waivers from the Marlins. Wall holds a 12.08 ERA over 13 career big league appearances, but his fastball touches the mid-90s, making him worth a flier. He's now on the Halos' 40-man roster.
Andre Ethier's ankle feeling better 10-04-2013
Andre Ethier LF LAD
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said that Andre Ethier's ankle injury has improved enough that he won't necessarily need a pinch-runner should he reach base.

Bill Plunkett on Twitter
Ethier remains unable to play the outfield, but he's improving slowly but surely. It's possible he'll be available for more than pinch-hitting duty later in the postseason should the Dodgers keep advancing.
Ramon Troncoso outrighted to Triple-A 10-04-2013
Ramon Troncoso P KC
White Sox sent RHP Ramon Troncoso outright to Triple-A Charlotte. Troncoso put up a 4.50 ERA over 29 appearances for the White Sox this season while missing time with a chest issue. The 30-year-old will have to settle for a minor league deal this winter.
Bryan Anderson outrighted to Triple-A 10-04-2013
Bryan Anderson C OAK

Daniel Stange P WAS
Daniel Stange has elected free agency.

Matt Eddy on Twitter
Stange struggled in his three appearances for the Angels and also at Triple-A, where he held a 4.52 ERA over 52 appearances. The 27-year-old shouldn't have trouble netting a minor league deal this winter.

Elvin Ramirez P NYM

Matt Eddy on Twitter
Ramirez posted a 5.46 ERA with a 49/45 K/BB ratio at Triple-A this season. The 25-year-old has a live arm, though, and will get an opportunity somewhere.

Billy Buckner P MLW

Edgar Gonzalez elects free agency 10-04-2013
Edgar Gonzalez P CIN
Edgar Gonzalez has elected free agency.

Matt Eddy on Twitter
Gonzalez missed most of the season with shoulder issues and struggled when he was healthy, holding a 7.50 ERA over eight relief appearances. As long as he's healthy, someone will give him a minor league deal.

Desmond Jennings likely to be pulled late 10-04-2013
Desmond Jennings LF TB
Rays manager Joe Maddon said that Desmond Jennings (hamstring) is likely to be removed from Friday's game in the later innings.

Marc Topkin on Twitter
Jennings didn't play a full nine innings in the tiebreaker and Wild Card games, either, as his troublesome left hamstring still isn't 100 percent. The outfielder does have three hits in six at-bats in those two contests, though.
Hellickson picked for Game 4 over Archer 10-04-2013
Jeremy Hellickson P PHI
Rays manager Joe Maddon announced that Jeremy Hellickson will start Game 4 of the ALDS against the Red Sox, if necessary.

Roger Mooney on Twitter
That's assuming he's not needed in relief before then. Maddon believes that Hellickson, who held a 3.44 ERA and 0.98 WHIP against the Red Sox in three starts this season, is a better matchup. Archer put up a 5.19 ERA and 2.08 WHIP in his two outings versus Boston in 2013.
Yanks making formal offer to Joe Girardi Fri. 10-04-2013
Joe Girardi C NYY

David Waldstein on Twitter
Negotiations between the club and the skipper's agent have been going on since Wednesday. The Yankees expect to have an answer within the next few days, so we could know by the end of the weekend if Girardi will stay in New York. The Cubs and Nationals are expected to pursue Girardi if things don't work out with the Yankees.
Jordy Mercer starting over Barmes Friday 10-04-2013
Jordy Mercer SS PIT
Jordy Mercer is starting at shortstop for the Pirates in Friday's Game 2 of the NLDS against the Cardinals.

Michael Sanserino on Twitter
Mercer gives the Pirates more offense than Clint Barmes, who also struggled in the field in Game 1. The 26-year-old hit .285/.336/.435 with eight home runs over 103 games for the Bucs this season and seized most of the starts at short down the stretch.
Cards opt for Wacha over Miller for Game 4 10-04-2013
Michael Wacha P STL
Cardinals manager Mike Matheny announced Friday that Michael Wacha would start a potential Game 4 against the Pirates.

FOX Sports Midwest on Twitter
Leaving Shelby Miller out of the NLDS rotation would be a surprise given that he's been in the rotation all year and pitched so well, but Wacha is arguably the hotter pitcher right now. Miller put up a 2.76 ERA in September but had a 15/13 K/BB ratio, while Wacha held a 1.72 mark and 28/10 K/BB ratio and came within one out of a no-hitter in his last start. A 5.32 ERA in four starts this season against the Pirates certainly didn't help Miller's case.

Newark Star-Ledger
The Yankees are willing to give Girardi a raise from this year's $3 million salary and want to get a deal done quickly, but the skipper has some leverage with the Cubs and Nationals and possibly the Reds showing interest. The Bombers are not expected to grant requests by others clubs to interview Girardi, who remains under contract through the end of the World Series.
Magic: Dodgers won't go after Robinson Cano 10-04-2013
Robinson Cano 2B SEA
Dodgers owner Magic Johnson indicated Thursday that the club would not pursue impending free agent Robinson Cano.

Newark Star-Ledger
The free-spending Dodgers have long been considered a potential landing spot for Cano, but Johnson says the club's priority this offseason is to sign Clayton Kerhshaw to a long-term extension. "I can't talk about that other guy," Johnson said. "But you already know that guy in New York is going to be paid. Not by us. But he's going to get paid."
Brian Omogrosso outrighted to Triple-A 10-04-2013

Clayton Kershaw dominates Braves with 12 Ks 10-04-2013
Clayton Kershaw P LAD
Clayton Kershaw struck out 12 while throwing seven innings of one-run ball in Thursday's 6-1 victory over the Braves. The Braves were able to run Kershaw's pitch count up early, as the left-hander wound up throwing 124 on the night. They were never able to break through, though, and Kershaw really settled in later on, striking out nine of the last 11 batters he faced. They'll get the dominating southpaw again in Game 5, should the series go that far. The Braves will send Mike Minor to the hill against Zack Greinke on Friday as they attempt to even things up.
Kris Medlen knocked around by Dodgers 10-04-2013
Kris Medlen P KC
Kris Medlen was charged with five runs on nine hits and a walk over four frames in Thursday's loss to the Dodgers. Medlen didn't get any help from his defense in the Dodgers' two-run second inning, but that doesn't excuse the poor effort from the right-hander. Of course, against Clayton Kershaw, it might not have mattered if Medlen was really on his game. The Braves' right-hander is lined up to face Kershaw again in Game 5 should the series advance that far.
Adrian Gonzalez goes deep in win over Braves 10-04-2013
Adrian Gonzalez 1B LAD
Adrian Gonzalez singled and smacked a two-run homer in Thursday's win over the Braves. Gonzalez's longball to dead center field in the third inning extended the Dodgers' lead to 4-0, which was more than Clayton Kershaw needed. Mark Ellis, Yasiel Puig and A.J. Ellis also had a two-hit night, while both Ellis', Skip Schumaker and Hanley Ramirez knocked in runs in addition to A-Gone's dinger. The Dodgers and Braves will match up again on Friday.
Chris Johnson drives in a run Thursday 10-04-2013
Chris Johnson 3B MIA
Chris Johnson contributed an RBI single in Thursday's loss to the Dodgers. Johnson drove in Freddie Freeman with a base knock to center field in the fourth inning, but that's all the scoring the Braves were able to come up with against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers' bullpen. Atlanta managed just five singles on the night.
