Van Slyke, Gordon have 'messed around' in CF 10-03-2013
Scott Van Slyke LF LAD
Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Thursday that he's "messed around" with Scott Van Slyke and Dee Gordon in center field during batting practice.

Dodgers.mlb.com
The Dodgers are using Skip Schumaker in center field with both Matt Kemp (ankle) and Andre Ethier (ankle) unable to play the field, but they're preparing some possible backup options. Mattingly said that Van Slyke is the "more viable option," while Gordon could be used "in an emergency." Carl Crawford and Yasiel Puig have experience in center field, but Mattingly wants to keep them at the corner spots.
Adam Wainwright superb as Cards take Game 1 10-03-2013
Adam Wainwright P STL
Adam Wainwright limited the Pirates to one run on three hits and no walks over seven innings in Thursday's 9-1 win over the Pirates. He notched nine strikeouts. Wainwright left a fastball over the plate that Pedro Alvarez hit out in the fifth, but he was otherwise in total control, throwing nasty curveball after nasty curveball. The righty tossed 105 pitches over his seven frames before Carlos Martinez and Trevor Rosenthal mowed down the Bucs in the final two innings. Waino is in line to pitch again in Game 5, if necessary.
A.J. Burnett rocked for seven runs in Game 1 10-03-2013
A.J. Burnett P PHI
A.J. Burnett was lit up for seven runs over just two innings in Thursday's loss to the Cardinals. Burnett got through the first two innings unscathed, but he came unglued in the third, allowing eight straight runners to reach base without recording an out. He allowed six hits, walked four and didn't strike out a batter in a start for the first time since 2004. Burnett is in line to pitch Game 5 if the series lasts that long.
Carlos Beltran launches homer as Cards roll 10-03-2013
Carlos Beltran RF NYY
Carlos Beltran belted a long three-run homer in Thursday's win over the Pirates. Beltran rocked a 443-foot shot off the facade in the right-field upper deck to get the scoring going in what turned out to be a seven-run third inning for the Cardinals. It was Beltran's only hit in five trips to the plate, but the Cards will take it. Beltran now has 15 home runs in his career, tying him with Babe Ruth. He's played in 35 playoff games.
Pedro Alvarez hits solo homer vs. Cards 10-03-2013
Pedro Alvarez 3B PIT
Pedro Alvarez blasted a solo homer in Thursday's loss to the Cardinals. Alvarez took Wainwright's first pitch of the fifth inning into the upper deck in right field. Unfortunately for the Pirates, it was the lone run and one of only four hits on the day. Andrew McCutchen had a pair of base knocks and Justin Morneau also had a hit for the Bucs.

He'll get the nod at second base over Alberto Callaspo. Sogard batted just .266 with two homers and a .686 OPS this season, but he was more productive against right-handers.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said there's a good chance that Yoenis Cespedes (shoulder) will play left field in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Tigers on Friday.

Joe Stiglich on Twitter
Cespedes tested his right shoulder Thursday by throwing and apparently came out of it fine. He'll at least be in the lineup as the DH for the season opener, but the A's are hoping he can play the outfield.
Miggy could be pulled for pinch-runner 10-03-2013
Miguel Cabrera 1B DET
Tigers manager Jim Leyland said that Miguel Cabrera could be pulled for a pinch-runner from the eighth inning on during the ALDS against the Athletics.

Joe Stiglich on Twitter
Cabrera's hip/abdominal/groin injury is playable, but he's obviously not 100 percent. It's hard to imagine the Tigers' lineup without him, but Leyland will consider using a pinch-runner in the late innings if it puts them in position to win.
Jhonny Peralta on Tigers' roster for ALDS 10-03-2013
Jhonny Peralta SS STL

Chris Iott on Twitter

Cruz batted .266/.327/.506 with 27 home runs and 76 RBI over 109 games this season and served a 50-game suspension for his ties to Biogenesis.

Kevin McAlpin on Twitter
Gattis has slowed down a bit since the All-Star break, but he produced five homers and an .808 OPS against southpaws for the year. That's enough for him to get the nod in the outfield, with B.J. Upton taking a seat on the bench. The Braves' lineup: Jason Heyward CF, Justin Upton RF, Freddie Freeman 1B, Gattis LF, Brian McCann C, Chris Johnson 3B, Andrelton Simmons SS, Elliot Johnson 2B, Kris Medlen P.

Felix Doubront P CHC
The Red Sox are planning to carry Felix Doubront over Matt Thornton for the final spot in their ALDS roster, a source told CSNNE.com's Sean McAdam.

Sean McAdam on twitter
Thornton is the proven reliever, but he's given up 22 hits and struck out just nine in 15 1/3 innings since coming over from the White Sox. The Red Sox will try Doubront instead and hope that his success starting carries over to the pen. They'll have three left-handed relievers in all, with Craig Breslow and Franklin Morales also occupying spots.
