Farquhar earns first save as M's defeat O's 08-03-2013
Danny Farquhar P SEA
Danny Farquhar earned his first save of the season Saturday in the Mariners' 8-4 defeat of the Orioles. Farquhar entered the game in the eighth inning and finished it out, retiring all four batters he faced -- two via strikeout. The 26-year-old right-hander has rattled off six straight scoreless appearances and could be the Mariners' go-to ninth-inning guy for a bit.
Erasmo Ramirez moves to 3-0 in win over O's 08-03-2013
Erasmo Ramirez P SEA
Erasmo Ramirez moved to 3-0 as the Mariners topped the Orioles on Saturday night in Baltimore. Ramirez struck out six, walked none and allowed only four hits -- but two of those hits were home runs and he wound up being charged with four earned runs in all. The 23-year-old right-hander will hope for better luck next week when he faces the punchless Brewers. He has great upside and is a worthy stash in mixed fantasy leagues.
Feldman surrenders five runs in O's to SEA 08-03-2013
Scott Feldman P HOU
Scott Feldman surrendered five earned runs over 4 2/3 innings Saturday in the Orioles' loss to Seattle. Feldman now has a 5.70 ERA in 36 1/3 innings since he was traded away from the Cubs. It's a tough transition for some pitchers moving from the National League to the American League. The 30-year-old right-hander will try to settle in next week when he pitches in a National League park out in San Francisco.
Orioles option Johnson to Triple-A Norfolk 08-03-2013
Steve Johnson P BAL
Orioles optioned RHP Steve Johnson to Triple-A Norfolk. A corresponding roster move will be made on Sunday. Johnson was activated on Friday and threw a scoreless inning on Saturday, striking out two while walking two. He'll likely be recalled later this summer.
Liriano throws seven shutout innings vs. Rox 08-03-2013
Francisco Liriano P PIT
Francisco Liriano tossed seven shutout innings Saturday in the Pirates' 5-2 win over the Rockies. Liriano was effectively wild, walking five batters but yielding only two hits and fanning six. The 29-year-old left-hander is now 12-4 with a 2.02 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 106/42 K/BB ratio in 102 2/3 innings this season. He should stay hot next week in Colorado.
Paredes optioned back to Triple-A by Astros 08-03-2013
Jimmy Paredes RF KC
Astros optioned OF Jimmy Paredes to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Tough room. Paredes was just recalled on August 1, going 1-for-4 on Thursday before being sent back down. The move was made to clear a spot for Sunday's starter Brad Peacock. Paredes will likely be back up at some point before the season ends.
Bourn's three steals lead Indians to 4-3 win 08-03-2013
Michael Bourn CF CLE
Michael Bourn went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases and three runs scored in the Indians' 4-3 win over the Marlins on Saturday. The three steals in a single game tied a career-high -- he's now done it four times -- and it was the first time he'd done it as a member of the Indians. Bourn also scored three of the Indians' four runs in the game, giving him 49 on the year. He hasn't run as much as usual this year, having stolen just 16 bases in 81 games, but games like Saturday's remind that he's still one of the fastest players in the league.
Myers smacks walkoff RBI single vs. Giants 08-03-2013
Wil Myers RF TB
Wil Myers hit a walkoff RBI single in the 10th inning as the Rays beat the Giants 2-1 on Saturday. The single into left field scored Desmond Jennings from third base and gave the Rays their 65th victory of the season. Myers is batting .327/.370/.513 with seven homers and 28 RBI in his first 38 major league games.
Price pitches nine innings, Rays beat Giants 08-03-2013
David Price P TB
David Price held the Giants to one run in nine innings Saturday in the Rays' 2-1 win. Tampa Bay didn't secure the victory until the 10th inning so Price was left with a no-decision despite his dominant stat line. He yielded just five hits and struck out five batters without issuing a walk. The left-hander has a 1.57 ERA, 0.59 WHIP and 40/1 K/BB in 57 1/3 innings since returning from a triceps strain on July 2.
Kipnis collects three RBI in win over Marlins 08-03-2013
Jason Kipnis 2B CLE
Jason Kipnis went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the Indians' win over the Marlins on Saturday. Kipnis did all his damage with well-timed singles, including one with the bases loaded that ended up bringing in the game-winning run. The three runs batted in gives Kipnis 68 on the year, third-most among second baseman. He's cooled since being the American League Player of the Month in June, but Kipnis is still hitting a nice .294/.373/.497 for the year.
Turner delivers more quality in no-decision 08-03-2013
Jacob Turner P MIA
Jacob Turner allowed two runs in six innings in a no-decision against the Indians on Saturday. Turner gave up six hits and two walks, striking out six in the outing. It was Turner's thrid straight quality start and his fifth consecutive allowing three runs or fewer. The right-hander owns a 3-3 record and 2.68 ERA in 12 starts. His next start will present another challenge, as he'll face the Braves in Atlanta on Friday.
Lincecum allows just one run in seven innings 08-03-2013
Tim Lincecum P SF
Tim Lincecum allowed just one run in seven innings Saturday in a no-decision against the Rays. The Giants lost on a Wil Myers RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning. Lincecum did his part, scattering six hits and one walk over his seven solid frames while fanning five. It's been a rollercoaster season, but he's now put together two straight dominant starts and has a juicy home matchup next week against the Brewers.
McAllister matches career-high in K's in ND 08-03-2013
Zach McAllister P CLE
Zach McAllister allowed two runs, striking out seven, over 5 1/3 innings against the Marlins on Saturday. McAllister struck out a career-high seven batters -- thanks in part to the Marlins offense -- while allowing two runs. Despite the outing, he wasn't able to pick up the win, remaining winless since May 23. He'll have a tougher task his next time out, facing the Tigers on Thursday.
Werth exits with tweaked groin; to sit Sunday 08-03-2013
Jayson Werth RF WAS
Jayson Werth left Saturday's game with a tweaked groin and will likely sit Sunday, according to Nationals manager Davey Johnson.

Amanda Comak on Twitter
Werth dealt with a similar injury in June and was able to play through it, and it looks like that will be the case this time as well. For his part, Werth said he hoped to be in the lineup on Sunday but Johnson said he'll likely give Werth the day off. Still, it's good news considering the alternative.
Peavy wins Red Sox debut with seven strong 08-03-2013
Jake Peavy P BOS
Jake Peavy won his Red Sox debut on Saturday after holding the Diamondbacks to two runs in seven innings. Peavy got a standing ovation from the Fenway Park crowd when he made his exit in the eighth inning. He scattered four hits and two walks while striking out seven. The 32-year-old right-hander should be great for Boston down the stretch. He gets the Royals in KC next.
Mesoraco homers twice as Reds top Cards 8-3 08-03-2013
Devin Mesoraco C CIN
Devin Mesoraco went 2-for-4 with two home runs in the Reds' 8-3 win over the Cardinals on Saturday. Mesoraco hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning before adding a solo blast in the eighth. The 25-year-old now has eight homers in 222 at-bats on the season, batting .257/.316/.414 in that span. Mesoraco has seriously higher upside at the plate than fellow Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan, who is set to return shortly, so we'd like to see him continue to get the lion's share of the at-bats going forward. Whether that will happen is another story.
Corbin surrenders three runs in loss to BOS 08-03-2013
Patrick Corbin P ARZ
Patrick Corbin surrendered three earned runs in six innings Saturday in a loss to the Red Sox. Corbin looked over-matched -- a rare sight this season. He allowed eight hits and walked two batters, falling to 12-3 on the year. The exciting young left-hander should be able to bounce back in his next start at home against the light-hitting Mets. He boasts a brilliant 2.33 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 22 starts this season.
Choo homers, drives in two against Cardinals 08-03-2013
Shin-Soo Choo LF TEX
Shin-Soo Choo went 1-for-5 with a home run in a win over the Cardinals on Saturday. The homer, a two-run shot, was his 15th of the season. It was also his first of the year with a runner on base, as his first 14 were solo shots. Despite cooling off recently, Choo is still hitting .283/.417/.465 on the year.
Goldschmidt launches 26th home run in loss 08-03-2013
Paul Goldschmidt 1B ARZ
Paul Goldschmidt slugged his 26th home run of the season in Saturday's loss to the Red Sox. It was a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning off Diamondbacks starter Patrick Corbin. Goldschmidt is hitting .301/.390/.554 and he's on pace for 131 RBI.
Cingrani fans seven in win over Cardinals 08-03-2013
Tony Cingrani P CIN
Tony Cingrani allowed three runs while striking out seven over five innings in a win against the Cardinals on Saturday. Cingrani was his usual inefficient self, needing 103 pitches to get through five-plus innings. He struck out seven but walked five and gave up four hits. Still, the lefty is now 5-1 with a 3.05 ERA and 97 strikeouts in 82 2/3 innings. Due to strange scheduling over the next week, Cingrani's next start may not come until Saturday against the Padres.
Westbrook loses control in loss against Reds 08-03-2013
Jake Westbrook P STL
Jake Westbrook allowed five runs in five innings in a loss to the Reds on Saturday. Westbrook wasn't sharp from the outset, and he finished with five walks and four hits allowed. He moved to 7-6 with a 3.48 ERA on the year, as he's come down quickly in his last two starts after beginning the season strong. The right-hander will look to get back on track against the Dodgers on Thursday.
Cabrera (abdomen) hopeful to play on Sunday 08-03-2013
Miguel Cabrera 1B DET
Miguel Cabrera (abdomen) is hopeful to be back in the Tigers' lineup on Sunday.

Jason Beck on Twitter
Cabrera said after Saturday's game that he felt better than he did earlier in the day. The third baseman hasn't played since Tuesday due to the injury, and any more missed time might prompt the Tigers to disable the slugger instead of playing short-handed. See how Cabrera feels when he gets to the ballpark on Sunday before inserting him back into your lineup for good.
Soriano earns 28th save, Nats beat Brewers 08-03-2013
Rafael Soriano P WAS
Rafael Soriano picked up his 28th save of the season in Saturday's win over the Brewers. It was a clean ninth inning for Soriano, who retired all three batters he faced. The 33-year-old closer has now rattled off four straight scoreless appearances.
Haren dominates Brewers for seven innings 08-03-2013
Dan Haren P LAD
Dan Haren went seven scoreless innings Saturday in the Nationals' 3-0 victory over the Brewers. That's now two straight dominant outings for the 32-year-old right-hander, who held the Mets to one run over seven innings last week. Haren has been prone to blowups this season but he should do well against the Phillies next time out. He may finally get a chance to settle in.
Vargas (arm) throws 50-pitch simulated game 08-03-2013
Jason Vargas P KC
Jason Vargas (arm) felt "really good" in a 50-pitch simulated game on Saturday, according to Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

Angels.mlb.com
Vargas hasn't pitched since mid-June but may be nearing a return. The Angels will wait a few days before deciding when Vargas will throw another bullpen session, but if that goes well the next step could be a rehab assignment. The left-hander was 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA before the injury.
Hand yields three runs in loss to Nationals 08-03-2013
Donovan Hand P MLW
Donovan Hand yielded three earned runs in seven innings Saturday in the Brewers' loss to the Nationals. Hand yielded a run-scoring sac fly to Anthony Rendon in the second inning, a Wilson Ramos homer in the fifth inning and a solo shot to Adam LaRoche in the sixth inning. And the Brewers offense provided him with no run support. Hand is now 0-3 on the season.
Scherzer goes 7 2/3 scoreless vs. White Sox 08-03-2013
Max Scherzer P DET
Max Scherzer fired 7 2/3 scoreless innings in the Tigers' win over the White Sox on Saturday. Scherzer yielded only three hits and three walks while striking out six. He has been a force all season, and will bring a dominant 16-1 record, 2.85 ERA and 0.91 WHIP into his next start in Cleveland against the Indians. The 29-year-old right-hander has 401 strikeouts in 339 innings since the start of the 2012 campaign.
A-Rod likely to be suspended through 2014 08-03-2013
Alex Rodriguez 3B NYY
Alex Rodriguez will be suspended by Major League Baseball on Monday, likely through the end of the 2014 season.

Sportscenter on Twitter
There was some discussion over the length of the suspension in recent days, with a lifetime ban being expected by some. But it seems that A-Rod may get off relatively lightly with a suspension that would span close to 200 games instead. Still, for a 38-year-old who will turn 40 during the 2015 season, it's basically a death sentence for his career.
Werth exits with apparent lower body injury 08-03-2013
Jayson Werth RF WAS
Jayson Werth left Saturday's game against the Brewers with an apparent lower body injury.

Amanda Comak on Twitter
Werth grounded out in the top of the sixth inning and didn't run out the ground ball terribly hard. He was replaced by Roger Bernadina in the bottom of the inning. Losing Werth for an extended period of time would be another tough blow the Nats have endured this season, as the outfielder is hitting .313/.382/.509 with 15 home runs this year.
Kimbrel earns 33rd save, Braves beat Phillies 08-03-2013
Craig Kimbrel P ATL
Craig Kimbrel collected his 33rd save of the season Saturday in the Braves' 5-4 defeat of the Phillies. Kimbrel allowed a leadoff single to Carlos Ruiz in the bottom of the 12th inning but rallied to secure the win. The Atlanta closer boasts a dominant 1.28 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and 66/15 K/BB ratio in 42 1/3 innings this season and he's now 33-for-36 in save opportunities.
Beachy yields four runs but Braves top Phils 08-03-2013
Brandon Beachy P ATL
Brandon Beachy gave up four runs -- three earned -- in 6 1/3 innings but the Braves beat the Phillies in extra innings on Saturday evening in Philadelphia. Beachy is still building arm strength as he works his way back from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery and hasn't quite found the command of his slider. It got him into trouble early again on Saturday and he finally abandoned the pitch and settled in. It's going to take a while for the 26-year-old to round back into form.
Lannan yields four runs in Phils' loss to ATL 08-03-2013
John Lannan P NYM
John Lannan yielded four runs -- two earned -- in 4 1/3 innings Saturday in the Phillies' loss to the Braves. The game wasn't decided until the 12th inning, so Lannan escaped with a no-decision. The left-hander issued two walks and didn't tally a single strikeout. He'll carry a 4.10 ERA and 1.35 WHIP into his next scheduled start against the Nationals and is not a recommended fantasy option in standard mixed leagues.
Cobb goes four innings in Class-A rehab start 08-03-2013
Alex Cobb P TB
Alex Cobb (concussion, blister) pitched four innings for Class-A Charlotte as part of his rehab. Cobb threw 56 pitches in the outing, giving up three hits, two walks and a run scored. The right-hander struck out three. Cobb will likely need at least two more starts, barring further setbacks, before being ready to rejoin the Rays.
Jansen gets 16th save as Dodgers beat Cubs 08-03-2013
Kenley Jansen P LAD
Kenley Jansen earned his 16th save of the season Saturday in the Dodgers' 3-0 blanking of the Cubs. Jansen fanned two of the three batters he faced in a perfect ninth frame. The hard-throwing right-hander should remain a top-tier fantasy closer down the stretch on this seemingly-unbeatable Dodgers team.
Capuano goes 6 1/3 scoreless vs. the Cubs 08-03-2013
Chris Capuano P BOS
Chris Capuano threw 6 1/3 scoreless innings Saturday in the Dodgers' defeat of the Cubs. It was the second straight scoreless performance for Capuano, who threw 6 2/3 scoreless frames last Sunday against the Reds. He's been a very good matchup-to-matchup fantasy option over the past several weeks. The lefty should probably be benched next time out in St. Louis.
Puig day-to-day with contusion on left thumb 08-03-2013
Yasiel Puig RF LAD
Yasiel Puig is day-to-day with a left thumb contusion.

Dylan Hernandez on Twitter
Puig stayed in Saturday's game initially after making a leaping catch at the wall, but he was later replaced by Skip Schumaker. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said it's a day-to-day injury and Puig will be re-assessed on Sunday. It wouldn't be a surprise if the Dodgers played it safe and rested their haphazard outfielder in the series finale at Wrigley Field on Sunday.
Samardzija yields three runs in loss to LAD 08-03-2013
Jeff Samardzija P CHC
Jeff Samardzija surrendered three runs in six innings Saturday as the Cubs fell to the Dodgers. It was a rough outing for the "The Shark" -- and it could have been even worse. He struck out nine but issued five walks and seven hits, throwing only 69 of his 112 pitches for strikes. Samardzija will carry a 6-10 record, 3.78 ERA and 1.31 WHIP into his next scheduled start at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. It'll be a tough matchup.
Parker goes six strong as A's defeat Rangers 08-03-2013
Jarrod Parker P OAK
Jarrod Parker held the Rangers to two runs over six innings Saturday in the A's 4-2 victory. It was a very solid outing against a very dangerous Texas offense. Parker yielded six hits but struck out six. He'll take a 7-6 record, 4.02 ERA and 1.23 WHIP into his next start in Toronto against the Blue Jays.
Garza allows four runs in Texas' loss to OAK 08-03-2013
Matt Garza P MLW
Matt Garza allowed four earned runs on eight hits Saturday in the Rangers' loss to the Rangers. It was the right-hander's first loss since joining Texas. Facing a lineup that was very foreign to him, he yielded three runs in the first inning and one more in the seventh. He should do better next week in Houston.
Cespedes hits two-run homer in win over TEX 08-03-2013
Yoenis Cespedes LF OAK
Yoenis Cespedes launched a two-run homer in the A's win over the Rangers on Saturday afternoon. The two-run shot was part of a three-run first inning for Oakland. Cespedes appears to be catching fire again and can be a huge fantasy asset down the stretch.
Kinsler hits 10th homer in loss to Athletics 08-03-2013
Ian Kinsler 2B DET
Ian Kinsler hit his 10th home run of the season Saturday in the Rangers' loss to the Athletics. Kinsler cranked a solo shot off Oakland starter Jarrod Parker in the top of the fifth inning. He's batting .274/.347/.425 with 46 RBI in 84 games this season.
Happ likely to return to Blue Jays next week 08-03-2013
J.A. Happ P TOR
J.A. Happ will likely rejoin the Blue Jays rotation next week, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.

Shi Davidi on Twitter
Happ will likely make the start Wednesday in Seattle in place of Todd Redmond, who was optioned to the minors on Saturday. Happ hasn't pitched since suffering a scary head injury on a comebacker on May 7, later spraining his right knee while on the rehab path. But he has been rehabbing in recent weeks and is apparently close to returning. The left-hander was 2-2 with a 4.91 ERA in seven starts before the injury.
Cruz exits game with apparent leg injury 08-03-2013
Nelson Cruz LF BAL
Nelson Cruz exited Saturday's game after limping to first base on a groundout in the eighth inning.

Jeff Wilson on Twitter
Cruz tweaked his quad earlier this week, so there's a good chance he re-aggravated the injury running to the base. More will be known about the cause of his removal after the game, but for now consider the right-fielder day-to-day.
Ross Detwiler (back) may be done for the year 08-03-2013
Ross Detwiler P WAS
Ross Detwiler could miss the remainder of the season with a herniated disc in his lower back, according to Nationals manager Davey Johnson.

Washington Post
"We'll try to bring him back before the year is over to make sure he's healthy, to make sure nothing further has to be done with him," Johnson said. "That's the main thing, that he can be healthy once he gets the inflammation out of there. ... It's really going to be a big concern of our doctors seeing how he does when he does come back." The original diagnosis was that Detwiler would miss about a month with the injury, but the timetable is close enough that the Nationals are unsure if the lefty will make it back in time. Either way, his fantasy value this year is next to nothing. He should be ready to go by the start of the 2014 season regardless.
Carlos Quentin (knee) out of lineup again 08-03-2013
Carlos Quentin LF SD
Carlos Quentin (knee) is not in the Padres' starting lineup again on Saturday.

Corey Brock on Twitter
Quentin has had a few days off but the knee is still sore, so Padres manager Bud Black is giving him another day to rest. Black said "he's doing better" and said a stint on the disabled list isn't in the cards for Quentin right now. He's still day-to-day at this point.
Indians outright Joe Martinez to AAA Columbus 08-03-2013
Joe Martinez P LAA
Indians sent RHP Joe Martinez outright to Triple-A Columbus. Martinez was designated for assignment by the Indians on July 30 and passed through waivers unclaimed.
A's acquire Fernando Nieve from the Indians 08-03-2013
Fernando Nieve P OAK
Athletics acquired RHP Fernando Nieve from the Indians for cash considerations. Nieve has registered a cool 1.81 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 55/12 K/BB ratio across 44 2/3 innings this season at Triple-A Columbus. The 31-year-old right-hander could be an asset in middle relief for Oakland.
Phelps (elbow) scratched from start Saturday 08-03-2013
David Phelps P NYY
David Phelps has been scratched from a scheduled rehab start Saturday due to renewed elbow soreness.

Bryan Hoch on Twitter
Not good news. Phelps has been on the disabled list since June 5 with a forearm strain and there is now no timetable for his return. He will presumably examined by an elbow specialist at some point next week.
Maxwell powers Royals past Mets in extras 08-03-2013
Justin Maxwell CF KC
Justin Maxwell launched a go-ahead pinch-hit homer off David Aardsma to lead the Royals to a 4-3 win over the Mets in 12 innings on Saturday. It was his first home run since being acquired from the Astros earlier this week. Maxwell figures to get most of his playing time against left-handed pitching with Kansas City, so his fantasy impact will likely be minimal.
Derek Jeter (calf) getting next two days off 08-03-2013
Derek Jeter SS NYY
Derek Jeter will take the next two days off because of a minor right calf and leg discomfort.

Andy McCullough on Twitter
It's not expected to be a lingering thing. Jeter should be back in the Yankees' starting lineup on Monday.
Chen solid in no-decision against Mets 08-03-2013
Bruce Chen P KC
Bruce Chen was handed a no-decision Saturday after limiting the Mets to just one run over six innings. Chen struck out a season-high eight batters, which is one shy of his career best. The only damage was a solo homer by Daniel Murphy in the first inning. The veteran southpaw was in line for the win before Aaron Crow gave up a two-run single in the eighth inning. Chen now has a 1.50 ERA in four starts since rejoining the Royals' rotation. We wouldn't buy in mixed fantasy leagues, especially with a start against the Red Sox coming up next week.
Hefner goes six innings in no-decision 08-03-2013
Jeremy Hefner P NYM
Jeremy Hefner allowed three runs over six innings Saturday in a no-decision against the Royals. Hefner allowed eight hits and no walks while striking out six. He entered Saturday's outing with a 12.34 over three starts since the All-Star break, so this was a nice step forward. Hefner's relevance in mixed fantasy leagues is likely over, but he's still capable of being a respectable fifth starter.
Murphy homers, steals base in loss to Royals 08-03-2013
Daniel Murphy 2B NYM
Daniel Murphy went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and a stolen base in a loss to the Royals on Saturday. Murphy is batting .354 (17-for-48) over his last 12 games and now has nine home runs and 13 stolen bases on the season. With David Wright (hamstring) expected to miss 3-5 weeks, the Mets could move him over to third base and have Eric Young, Jr. play second base. This would make room for Lucas Duda to play left field. While this would make the Mets a worse team defensively, they are going to need to try to find offense with Wright sidelined.
Brandon League placed on waivers by LAD 08-03-2013
Brandon League P LAD
Brandon League has been placed on waivers.

Nick Cafardo on Twitter
It's a pretty common thing this time of year, and it's highly doubtful League gets moved. He signed a three-year, $22.5 million contract last October.
Brad Peacock to start for Astros on Sunday 08-03-2013
Brad Peacock P HOU
Brad Peacock will start for the Astros on Sunday.

Brian T. Smith on Twitter
If it goes well, he might be allowed to finish out the year in the Houston rotation. Peacock, 25, has a promising 2.73 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 76/22 K/BB ratio in 79 innings (13 starts) this season at Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Red Sox recall Rubby De La Rosa from AAA 08-03-2013
Rubby De La Rosa P BOS
Red Sox recalled RHP Rubby De La Rosa from Triple-A Pawtucket. De La Rosa, 24, has registered a 4.23 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 74/42 K/BB ratio in 76 2/3 innings this season at the Triple-A level. He possesses good raw stuff but hasn't quite put it all together yet and will pitch in middle relief. There's no fantasy relevance here.
Red Sox option Pedro Beato to Triple-A level 08-03-2013
Pedro Beato P ATL
Red Sox optioned RHP Pedro Beato to Triple-A Pawtucket. Beato has a cool 3.12 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in nine relief appearances this season with the Red Sox. The 26-year-old right-hander should get another try soon.
Wright (hamstring) expected to miss 3-5 weeks 08-03-2013
David Wright 3B NYM

Roy Oswalt P COL
Roy Oswalt experienced a setback with his hamstring Saturday while throwing a simulated game.

Troy Renck on Twitter

MLB officials done negotiating with Rodriguez 08-03-2013
Alex Rodriguez 3B NYY
According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, MLB officials are done negotiating with Alex Rodriguez over the length of his impending Biogenesis-related suspension.

Joel Sherman on Twitter
A large sentence -- possibly a lifetime ban -- will be instituted on Monday by commissioner Bud Selig and then the appeals process can begin. A-Rod hit a big two-run homer Friday in a rehab game at Double-A Trenton, but we won't see him in pinstripes again for a while.
Padres sign Ronny Cedeno to minors contract 08-03-2013
Ronny Cedeno SS PHI
Padres signed SS Ronny Cedeno to a minor league contract; assigned him to High-A Lake Elsinore.

Miguel Cabrera not in Saturday's lineup 08-03-2013
Miguel Cabrera 1B DET
Miguel Cabrera (abdomen) is not in Saturday's lineup.

Eric Hosmer starting in right field Saturday 08-03-2013
Eric Hosmer 1B KC
Eric Hosmer is starting in right field Saturday against the Mets.

Bob Dutton on Twitter
The Royals are looking to get both Hosmer and Billy Butler in the starting lineup, so the move opens a spot for Butler at first base. Hosmer has limited experience in the outfield, but shouldn't be a liability defensively. He appeared in three games as a right fielder in 2012.
Rockies might not pick up Betancourt's option 08-03-2013
Rafael Betancourt P COL
Rockies owner Dick Monfort said the team has yet to decide whether to pick up Rafael Betancourt's $4.25 million option in 2014.

Rockies.mlb.com
Betancourt has a 3.16 ERA and 15 saves for the Rockies, but has struggled to stay healthy and is currently on the 15-day disabled list. With Rex Brothers proving capable of taking over the closer role, he could be viewed as expendable this offseason. The 38-year-old right-hander could also be a candidate for an August trade, but will need to be placed on revocable waivers.
Wright (hamstring) not in Saturday's lineup 08-03-2013

Josh Johnson could have next start skipped 08-03-2013
Josh Johnson P SD
Josh Johnson could have his next start skipped to give him more time to work through his problems in bullpen sessions.

BlueJays.mlb.com
Johnson has been pitching through knee tendinitis and is posting a 8.84 ERA over his last eight starts, so the Blue Jays could skip his next turn in the rotation to get him back on track. "Ideally you don't want to do that, but we have to get something done," manager John Gibbons said. "We have to get Josh straightened out somehow."
Rockies to pick up De La Rosa's $11M option 08-03-2013

Rockies.mlb.com
De La Rosa was limited to just 13 starts the last two seasons due to Tommy John surgery, but is finally healthy and currently has a 3.21 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 126 1/3 innings. Despite the health risk, he'll remain in the starting rotation at least through 2014. The Rockies have yet to make a decision on whether to pick up mutual options on relievers Rafael Betancourt and Matt Belisle.

Kole Calhoun hits first big-league homer 08-03-2013
Kole Calhoun RF LAA
Kole Calhoun went 4-for-6 and hit his first major league home run Friday as the Angels beat the Blue Jays 7-5. Calhoun is 8-for-19 with three walks since replacing Albert Pujols on the roster, and not only is he getting to start against right-handers, but he's batting leadoff against them, too. Since he will likely sit against most left-handers, he's not a must-add in mixed leagues. He should carry significant AL-only value going forward, though.
Ernesto Frieri records 26th save 08-03-2013
Ernesto Frieri P LAA
Ernesto Frieri picked up his 26th save with a scoreless ninth Friday against the Blue Jays. Frieri struck out the side in a two-run game, though he did allow a double in the process. It was his first save since July 24 after he blew back-to-back chances earlier this week. One more blown save will likely get him bumped back to middle relief for a bit.
Jurickson Profar homers against A's 08-03-2013
Jurickson Profar 2B TEX
Jurickson Profar got the start at DH and homered Friday in the Rangers' defeat of the Athletics. It's hard making sense of some of the Rangers' decisions of late, like them announcing that they intend to keep Profar in the infield even after they claimed Adam Rosales and sent down Engel Beltre. The Rangers have a hard enough time finding at-bats for one backup infielder, much less two. Profar helped his cause tonight, but the key to his fantasy value is earning a longer look in the outfield.
Alexi Ogando walks five in no-decision 08-03-2013
Alexi Ogando P TEX
Alexi Ogando was removed after allowing three runs in four innings and walking five Friday against the A's. Ogando has managed to pitch just 13 2/3 innings in his first three starts back from the disabled list. With Colby Lewis perhaps 7-10 days away and Matt Harrison hopeful of returning at the end of the month, it's looking more and more like Ogando will finish the season in the bullpen.
Tommy Milone gives up six runs to Texas 08-03-2013
Tommy Milone P OAK
Tommy Milone was tagged for six runs in 3 2/3 innings by the Rangers on Friday. Milone has had two outings this season in which he's given up six runs, and both have come against the Rangers; he's 9-7 with a 3.84 ERA against everyone else. He's due to get Toronto, Houston and Seattle in his next four starts, so mixed leaguers should stick with him.
Andrew Cashner goes seven strong in win 08-03-2013
Andrew Cashner P SD
Andrew Cashner pitched seven innings of two-run ball to beat the Yankees on Friday. Even with Derek Jeter and Curtis Granderson back, Cashner made pretty easy work of the Yankees lineup tonight, allowing just one extra-base hit and never walking a batter. He threw 97 pitches in finishing seven innings for the first time since June 11; the Padres have been cutting back his workload since they're not going to want him topping 150 innings or so this year.
CC Sabathia gives up five runs in loss 08-03-2013
CC Sabathia P NYY
Starting on six days' rest, CC Sabathia gave up five runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Padres. The extra little break did Sabathia no good; he never had a 1-2-3 inning tonight and things could have gone even worse had Chase Headley not been thrown out at home to end the third inning. Sabathia is 9-10 with a 4.78 ERA, and he probably shouldn't be used in mixed leagues right now.
Everth Cabrera goes 4-for-5 in victory 08-03-2013
Everth Cabrera SS SD
Everth Cabrera went 4-for-5 with an RBI against the Yankees on Friday. It may well be Cabrera's final weekend of the season, so enjoy it now. He was coming off a month of July in which he hit just .196 in 92 at-bats.
Lo blows save Friday against Twins 08-03-2013
Chia-Jen Lo P HOU
Chia-Jen Lo blew a save Friday night against the Twins. After replacing Josh Fields with the tying run at second base and one out in the ninth inning, Lo threw a wild pitch and walked a batter before giving up a single to Brian Dozier. The rookie right-hander was able to retire the next two batters to keep the score tied, but the damage was already done. Jose Cisnero, who many pegged as the favorite for saves with Jose Veras in Detroit, allowed a run on three hits in the eighth inning and has really struggled over the past few weeks. It looks like this will be a messy situation for fantasy owners the rest of the way.
Mets expected to recall Mike Baxter Saturday 08-03-2013
Mike Baxter RF LAD
The Mets are expected to recall OF Mike Baxter on Saturday.

Adam Rubin on Twitter
No word yet on what the corresponding move is, but it could be David Wright heading to the disabled list. Baxter will provide the Mets with a left-handed bat off the bench. Baxter is hitting .271/.373/.493 with five homers and 15 RBI in 41 games at Triple-A.
Dozier helps Twins walk off against Astros 08-03-2013
Brian Dozier 2B MIN
Brian Dozier played hero for the Twins on Friday night by delivering a walk-off RBI single in the 13th inning in a 4-3 victory. Dozier was the reason the game made it to extra innings, as he also delivered a game-tying single in the bottom of the ninth inning. The 27-year-old finished the evening 3-for-7 with two RBI and a run scored. He entered Friday's action hitting just .209 (9-for-43) with two RBI in 10 games since the All-Star break, so fantasy owners will have to hope that his August will look closer to what he did in June as opposed to July.
Deduno goes six innings in no-decision 08-03-2013
Samuel Deduno P MIN
Samuel Deduno gave up two runs over six innings Friday in a no-decision against the Astros. Deduno gave up four hits and matched a season-high with five walks, but he managed to keep his team in the ballgame. The 30-year-old owns a 3.17 ERA through 13 starts this season and induces plenty of grounders, but he's walking a fine line to success. It's hard to count on him outside of AL-only leagues.
Cosart brilliant in no-decision vs. Twins 08-03-2013
Jarred Cosart P HOU
Jared Cosart was handed a no-decision after tossing seven innings of one-run ball Friday against the Twins. Cosart left in line for the victory, but Jose Cisnero blew the lead in the eighth inning. The rookie right-hander gave up just five hits and one walk while striking out four. He has now allowed just three earned runs over 28 innings through his first four starts in the majors, good enough for a 0.96 ERA. We wouldn't trust him in mixed fantasy leagues with the Red Sox on tap for next week, but the Astros have an intriguing talent on their hands here.
Villar hitless in extra-inning loss to Twins 08-03-2013
Jonathan Villar SS HOU
Jonathan Villar went 0-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and two strikeouts in Friday's extra-inning loss to the Twins. Villar is now hitting just .195 (8-for-41) with 18 strikeouts over his first 11 games in the majors. Things look even worse when you consider that he had four hits over his first two games. The Astros have nothing to lose by playing him everyday at shortstop, but they could drop him out of the leadoff spot soon to try to take the pressure off.
Jeremy Hefner will start on Saturday 08-03-2013
Jeremy Hefner P NYM
Jeremy Hefner will start for the Mets on Saturday after Carlos Torres had to be used in relief on Friday.

Adam Rubin on Twitter
With the Mets currently utilizing a six-man rotation, Hefner can easily slide in on regular rest without disrupting the rest of the rotation. Zack Wheeler will now start on Sunday.
David Wright to undergo MRI on Saturday 08-03-2013
David Wright 3B NYM
David Wright is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his right hamstring on Saturday.

Adam Rubin on Twitter
Wright initially tweaked the hamstring on Wednesday then re-aggravated it in the 10th inning on Friday. It's looking increasingly likely that Wright may need a trip to the disabled list.
Melky Cabrera (knee) heads for more tests 08-03-2013
Melky Cabrera LF TOR
Melky Cabrera's (knee) MRI revealed issues with the meniscus in his left knee, and he'll head to Florida to undergo further testing.

Shi Davidi on Twitter
It sounds like the type of injury that will sideline Cabrera for more than 15 days. Rajai Davis figures to draw most of the starts in his absence and is certainly worthy of an add in all mixed leagues.
Zimmermann goes six scoreless for 13th win 08-03-2013
Jordan Zimmermann P WAS
Jordan Zimmermann fired six scoreless frames Friday in a 4-1 win over the Brewers. Zimmermann won his 13th game of the season, which gives him a new career-high. He gave up four hits (all doubles) and walked a season-high four batters, so it wasn't easy, but the Brewers failed to cash in on scoring opportunities. Zimmermann hasn't looked like the same pitcher since the start of July, which could partially be blamed on a neck issue, but he'll bring some momentum into an important start against the Braves next week at home.
Harper homers, has two RBI in win over MIL 08-03-2013
Bryce Harper LF WAS
Bryce Harper went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI in a win over the Brewers on Friday. Harper launched a solo homer in the top of the sixth inning and was credited with an RBI on a fielding error by Rickie Weeks in the ninth. The 20-year-old isn't going to get as many RBI chances hitting out of the leadoff spot, but his recent production will likely cause Nationals manager Davey Johnson to keep him there.
Carlos Gonzalez not expected back Saturday 08-03-2013
Carlos Gonzalez LF COL
Carlos Gonzalez does not expect to return to the Rockies' lineup on Saturday.

Troy Renck on Twitter
CarGo indicated before Friday's game that while his finger is feeling better, it is still bothering him, especially while hitting. The plan seems to be to give him an extra day of rest and return to the lineup on Sunday.
Werth has three hits Friday vs. Brewers 08-03-2013
Jayson Werth RF WAS
Jayson Werth doubled and singled twice in Friday's win over the Brewers. After hitting .367 with seven home runs and 22 RBI in 27 games in July, Werth's August is off to a strong start. The 34-year-old outfielder now has an .886 OPS in 78 games this season, which would rank 13th in the majors if he had enough at-bats to qualify.
Lucroy homers in loss to Nationals 08-03-2013
Jonathan Lucroy C MLW
Jonathan Lucroy homered Friday in a loss to the Nationals. His solo shot off Tyler Clippard in the eighth inning was the only offense of the evening for the Brew Crew. With a .286/.336/.506 batting line to go along with 16 home runs and 58 RBI in 95 games, Lucroy has been one of the best catchers in fantasy leagues this season. Him hitting .235 in April is but a distant memory.
Grandal to undergo surgery on August 6 08-03-2013
Yasmani Grandal C SD
Yasmani Grandal will undergo reconstructive ACL surgery on his right knee on August 6.

Corey Brock on Twitter
He's expected to need 9-12 months to recover from the injury, effectively wiping out most of his 2014 season as well. Combined with his 50-game suspension for PED use, it was an extremely disappointing season for the Padres' backstop in 2013.
